INTRODUCTION

 

You have been assigned the task of identifying key information for one of our operatives in a foreign country. You will be told to locate specific facts about a country from websites. Today's world has become a "smaller" place, meanwhile there still exist more differences than similarities between nations and people. Let's take a look at what makes people and countries unique.


TASK

You need to accomplish certain tasks which provide basic information about specific countries in the world.

1. Identify and locate five countries.

2. Name a dominant religious group found in each country.

3. Find the currency exchange rates and print a picture of the money for each company.

4. Describe the geographic relationship of the United States to your five countries using absolute location and distance from Lansing, Michigan.

PROCESS


 

There are many search engines and sites which may supply the information you need. In order to accomplish your goal more efficiently, we have chosen sites for you to visit and acquire specific information about different countries.

 

1. Identify and locate five countries from different continents..

2. Name the religion that seems to be dominant.
    (Hint: Look for the largest percentage in the 4th column)

3. Find the current exchange rate for United States dollars and the national currency of your country.

4. Find a picture of the currency for your contry and print it.

5. Identify: 

    A) The absolute location of a major city in your country
         Give the latitude and longitude for your 5 countries.
         Open up Google Earth
         Go to “view” and select “Lat/Lon Grid”
         Type in your country and click “search”


    B) How far is it from Lansing, Michigan to your country?
         How Far Is It ?


6. Each group member should find 3-5 interesting facts about ONE country.  You can use the following websites to help you.

    Jamaica

    Mexico

    Peru



EVALUATION


1. Your completed matrix will count toward the group-work portion of your grade.

2. You will also complete an research project individually.
        a) Choose ONE coutry that your group has already researched.
        b) Find 3-5 interesting facts about your country.
        c) Include a map to show where your country is located.

3. You may choose to present your information by:
        a) creating a webquest
        b) write a 1 1/2 - 2 page essay
        c) make an 8-10 slide powerpoint presentation
        d) prepare a lesson to teach the class
        e) videotape a presentation - use at least 1 visual
        f) creat a 2-4 page travel brochure
        g) create your own presentation - see Mrs. Stuard for approval


This project is worth:
    20 points - including the information from the research matrix and #2 above
    15 points - neatness and organization of the information
      5 points - quality of presentation

CONCLUSION

 

At the conclusion of this activity, you should have a clearer understanding of the geography of world religions, location and distance of places from Lansing, MI., and current value of the United States dollar. Eventually you may use this information in a larger report about a foreign country. Included in your that report will be more geographic information pertinent to one country.
