Drawing of Spiriea UlmaniaLittle is known or recorded as to the history of Meadowsweet it is first mentioned in literature in Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ (A Knights Tale) as an alcoholic drink, it’s name comes from the similarity of it’s leaves to Elm (Ulnus) leaves. It supposedly treats dioreah and dropsy in children but there is no evidence as it’s efficacy, it is collected wild in the summer when it is in flower.
