A smile and a wave from Ringo - leaving his London flat last night with girl friend Maureen Cox |
TIGHT security measures were taken at Luton Airport, Bedfordshire, yesterday when Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr flew home from the Virgin Islands with their girl friends.
SO TIGHT that vast security moves were also being made at London Airport - where officials had not been told that the boys were going to Luton instead.
While sun-tanned Paul and Ringo, with actress Jane Asher and 17-year-old Maureen Cox, were having a peaceful arrival at Luton, there was half an hour of confusion at London Airport.
Ministry of Aviation officials had worked out an elaborate plan to beat the fans.
Jane Asher's mother was taken into their confidence. As a Caravelle airliner arrived from Paris they ushered her into a Black Maria which took her right up to the plane.
The plan was to whisk Beatles and friends away before the fans knew what was happening. But they were not aboard.
Paul and Ringo decided at the last moment to charter a plane from Paris. At Luton, only two 15-year-old schoolgirls got through the security guard. They threw a letter - 250ft. long - and a box of presents into the Beatles' car as they drove away.
Ringo, at his Belgravia flat last night said Maureen had given up her job as a hairdresser in Liverpool. He denied she had been sacked.
"She gave in her notice. She was fed up with the job." he said.
"We are not getting married. Whenever you are seen with a girl people want to marry you off. It's a bit of a drag."
