Quotes From Maureen

THE GIRLS AT THE CAVERN:
They used to hang around the Cavern all day long, just on the off chance of seeing them. They'd come out of the lunchtime session and just stand outside all afternoon, queuing up for the evening. Ritchie and I once went past at midnight and they were already queuing up for the next day. They bought them some pies. They were knocked out. The object was to get as near the front row as possible, so that they could see the Beatles, and be seen. I never joined the queue till about two or three hours before the Cavern opened. It frightened me. There would be fights and rows among the girls. When the doors opened the first ones would tear in, knocking each other over. They'd keep their rollers in and jeans on for the first groups. Then when it got near the time for the Beatles to come on, if there was a gang of four say, they would go off in turns to the ladies with their little cases to get changed and made-up. So when the Beatles came on they'd look smashing, as if they'd just arrived. I suppose it was partly sex and partly the music. That was the attraction. They were obviously dying to be noticed and get to know one of them. But no, it was really just everything about being there. It was terrible, the mad screams when they came on. They went potty.

TAKING DOWN RINGO'S CAR NUMBER ON HER EXCERCISE BOOK AFTER CHASING HIM AND GETTING HIS AUTOGRAPH: I can remember his car number to this day - NWM 466

BEING DARED TO KISS PAUL MCCARTNEY AT THE CAVERN BY A FRIEND: I said to her that it was she who was scared to do it. She said I was scared. So just for a bet, I fought my way t the band room and kissed Paul when he came out. My friend was so annoyed and jealous that she started crying. But it was really Ritchie I liked best. I'd just kissed Paul for a dare. So I wated till Ritchie came out and kissed him as well.

WHY SHE DIDN'T TELL HER FRIEND SHE WAS IN THE WAY WHILE RINGO WAS CHATTING HER UP FOR THE FIRST TIME: I felt a bit scared.

WHY SHE STAYED IN THE BACKGROUND BEHIND HER FAMOUS BOYFRIEND: I might have been killed otherwise. The other girls were not friendly at all. They wanted to stab me in the back. It was part of their image, that they weren't married and so each girl thought she might have a chance. None of them were supposed to have steadies. A few eventually found out of course.

SOME FANS BECOMMING UNFRIENDLY WHEN THEY FOUND OUT SHE WAS WITH RINGO STARR: They used to come into the hairdresser's where I was working. I couldn't do anything about that. I would have to do their hair. Then they would threaten me - "If you see that Ringo Starr again you're for it." When I went outside they'd push me. I used to get threatening phone calls - "my brother's going to get you" they used to say.

THE DANGER OF BEING THE GIRLFRIEND OF A BEATLE: They were playing at the Locarno once. Just before they'd finished, Ritchie told me to go outside and sit in the car and wait for him so no one would see me. I was sitting in the car when this girl came up. She must have followed me. She said "Are ou going out with Ringo?" I said no, oh no, not me. He's just a friend of my brother's. "Liar," she said, "I just saw you talking to him." I'd forgotten to wind the window up. Before I could do anything she had her hand through the window and scratched me down my face. She started screaming and shouting some very select language at me. I thought this is it. I'm going to get stabbed. But I just got the window up in time. If I hadn't she would have opened the door and killed me.

BOYFRIEND RICHARD TRAVELLING THE WORLD WITH THE BEATLES: He went away but he always came back to me.

WHY SHE GAVE UP HAIRDRESSING: I had to leave that job after a year because of Beatles fans. I was still based in Liverpool with my mum and dad and I used to visit London to see Ritchie.

HER FAMOUS HUSBAND'S STAGE NAME AND WHY SHE NEVER USES IT: I don't know why, really, Ringo just seems funny. His name is Ritchie.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS: I'm not really fussy where I live - providing it's with Ringo

FAMILY LIFE, 1965: I suppose I am the envy of millions of other girls . . . We hope that our first will be a boy. Naturally, I'd like the baby to be like Ringo. But he needn't neccesarily follow in his father's footsteps.

LEARNING TO COOK FOR HER HUSBAND: I'm in my new, lavish kitchen as much as possible, fiddling about and experimenting.

STAYING UP LATE TO COOK A MEAL FOR HER HUSBAND WHEN HE GETS HOME: When he's recording I often stay up till 4:30 in the morning. He's usually got up late the day before and perhaps not had a proper meal before going out. So I try to have something for him when he comes home, however late. Then I know at least he's got a meal inside him. They all just peck at things when they're working. If it turns out he has eaten a proper meal at work, or with the boys, then it doesn't matter. I can easily use up the potatoes. Nothing's wasted. But I usually give him a meal. he might eat it quickly as he's tired, but he does like something when he comes home. I don't mind staying up for him. I might change the furniture round, to put the hours in. I just mess around really. I spent two hours the other night deciding where to move a lamp. I might make things, curtains or clothes. I put sequins on an old lampshade the other day.

SEWING: I like instamatic things. I'm in such a hurry that I never use patterns. I might start off making a dress, but keep going wrong, cutting it down and down till I've ended up making a handkerchief.

HAVING A BABY: I don't care if I have a boy or a girl. Being a mother and being happily married is just about as much as any girl can wish for.

MONEY DURING HER FIRST MARRIAGE: Ritchie put in £5,000 every so often and when that was finished I’d ask his secretary Barbara for more.

FRIENDSHIPS DURING HER TIME AS A BEATLE WIFE: We did not have any close friends. Because of our position... I suppose. Lots of aquaintances, but few close friends.

ANSWERING HER HUSBAND'S FAN MAIL: I like answering the letters. I've been doing it for five years now. I get some lovely replies back from the parents. I do get behind sometimes. When I was having Jason I got behind for a few weeks and had three shopping bags full of them. I don't do it just because people are polite. I know that if I liked someone enough to write a nice letter to them I would like some ort of reply. I've had letters from fans saying this is their fifteenth letter. They mut feel awful. What they've been doing is writing to the office. The office gets thousands and just can't cope. Not that I want any more sent to me than I get now, thank you.

HER HUSBAND NOT REALISING HIS ABILITIES: It was his idea to do it with sequins (an intricate piece of sewing she created featuring the Sgt Pepper logo which was made out of hundreds and hundreds of sequins), didn't he tell you? I know it's rubbish really, but he never takes credit for things. I think he often underestimates himself. He does forget what good ideas he has had, because he thinks he's not creative. He says it's for the others to have the good ideas. But he is good at many things. He's a good painter. I think films will be very good for him, so I hope they come off. He's great at all things. He's a lovely dancer.

REACTION TO HER HUSBAND'S AFFAIR: I was hurt but it didn’t change my feelings for Ritchie. I thought that because he wanted a divorce that that’s what we had to do. Ritchie gave me the names of two or three solicitors. I can’t remember how I got in contact with them. I was very upset at the time.

WHY SHE SIGNED AN AFFADAVIT DURING HER DIVORCE TO SAY SHE COULD NO LONGER LIVE WITH HER HUSBAND: I couldn’t say that in court because it just wasn’t true. I did want to live with him. I loved him. I wanted to stay married. I wanted to stay in Tittenhurst Park because it was our home.

DESCRIBING HERSELF DURING HER DIVORCE: I have no knowledge of money, taxation or life. ...I'm as thick as two short planks.

DESCRIBING HER HUSBAND RICHARD DURING HER DIVORCE: He's a sodding great Andy Capp but I adore him.

HER REACTION TO LOOSING FRIEND JOHN LENNON: I was always very close to John, then I heard on a newsflash that he'd been shot. I couldn't take it in at first. I was in a state of shock. I went into trauma, and my hair began falling out. First it was small handfuls, then huge lumps. It looked as though I'd go bald.

OPINION OF HERSELF IN 1985: I've lived through a lot, and I've learnt a lot. I'd say I'm a happier person these days. I'm happy with my life now. I've learnt to be contented. I've matured.

REACTION TO THE SUGGESTION THAT INTEREST IN MYSTICISM IS A GIMMICK: I think any sensible person maintains his or her beliefs.

BOYFREIND ISAAC TIGRETT: Isn't he handsome?

THE HARD ROCK CAFE I've asked many friends from the world of rock to donate things for an exhibition Isaac is going to hold at the Hard Rock Cafe. He's [boyfriend Isaac] opening more restaraunts all round the world this year. And each one will be like a pop museum. He runs a wholesome honest business. I like to be part of it. Each time a rock star gives us a guitar or some other posession we're giving money to the charity of their choice.

HER CHILDREN, March 1985 My children mean everything to me and whatever happened between Rich and me, he's been a good father to them. I've kept in touch with the pop scene through my sons Zak, who's 20, and Jason, who's 17. They're both drummers. We've lived through a lot of noise! My children are getting older now. You can't carry on forever treating them like babies. They've got to find their own way in life... My second son Jason is working for Isaac at the Hard Rock Cafe. It's like a family business. I've been taking my children there since they were young. My daughter Lee is now 14 and goes to school locally. She's just great, really sweet.

PREPARING TO BECOME A GRANDMOTHER: The baby's due in September. No, it doesn't make me feel old. I was so excited by the news. It's exactly what I've always wanted.
