From the village of Black River, one reaches Le Morne Brabant, a striking spot flanked by mountain reaching a height of 245 metres and surrounded by one of the most spectacular beaches of Mauritius. The lagoon offers a breathtaking sight and the scenery is enhanced by the outlying Ile aux Bénitiers. The public beach is quite popular.

The Morne mountain is associated with a vivid episode of Mauritian history. It is believed that rebellious slaves fleeing plantations took refuge on the peak because of its inaccessibility. Legend has it that when the British soldier tried to reach the area to annouce that slavery had been abolished, the fugitives wrongly thought they cornerd. Many of them preferred to jump to their death from the peak to avoid recapture into the bonds of slavery.

The coastal road from Le Morne to Souillac highlights a different perpective of Mauritius, with its wild vegetation and sparsely populated areas. Baie du Cap is a welcome stop after Le Morne. The view which unfolds while one is driving around the bay to the Macondé promontory is unique in Mauritius.

The next stop is Bel Ombre, a charming small village which has so far relied for its economy on the just gone out of production Bel Ombre sugar factory. After Bel Ombre, the Jacotet Bay looks inviting but swimming is dangerous in this area. Next, we reach Pointe aux Roches with its long unspoilt beach. Villas Pointe aux Roches provide accommodation in the area. For food, one can stop at the Green Palm restaurant, on the way to Souillac.
