F. A. Q. s About The Writing Center
HOW DOES THE WRITING CENTER WORK?
You may visit the Writing Center when ever You wish. It can be a quiet place to
compose on your own. Or, you can choose to ask for help with your writing. For
some students, a teacher makes a referral requesting that the Center work with
the student on a particular assignment or on developing specific writing skills.
IS THE WRITING CENTER JUST FOR REMEDIAL WRITERS?
No. The Center services all students at all levels of ability, from freshmen to
seniors and from beginners to advanced writers.
WHEN SHOULD I TAKE MY PAPER TO THE WRITING CENTER?
You don't even have to have a draft yet. Come into the center to discuss your
ideas, to brainstorm, or to ask for help on how to get started. If you have a
draft, don't make the mistake of coming in 10 minutes before the paper is due.
If you need help with a paper, come to the Center at least several days before
your deadline.
WHO WILL HELP ME WITH MY WRITING?
Often a teacher will be your tutor. Peer Tutors (selected juniors and seniors)
will also be available to help.
WILL THE WRITING CENTER HELP ME FIX MY PAPER?
No. The Writing Center is not an editing and proofreading service, although it
will guide you through the editing and proofreading process. More importantly,
the Center will help you compose your work by teaching you the principles and
elements of composition. It will give you direction if you don't understand a
writing assignment. It will diagnose your skills level and offer you a personal
developmental tutoring program if you have any systematic difficulties.
WILL THE WRITING CENTER HELP ME WITH A WRITING TASK IN ANY SUBJECT?
Yes! The Center is not just for English class, but for writing assignments and
needs in any subject. The Center welcomes your questions about Science and lab
reports, Social Studies document- based questions, Health-ed. homework, Business
letters, as well as English essays. And drop in any time if you just want to
talk about writing.
