If things went differently… (From '99 loses CONTROL'

Before you begin reading this some facts you'll need to know: They hadn't figured out that Victor Royale was a KAOS agent.

Max had lost his 99 to a rich gambler on San Jirman island two years on this day. He hadn't had the heart let her leave forever but he hadn't had the nerve to bring her back, and admit his undying love… Alas, still Max brooded over her. He had the week off from CONTROL and had no intention of actually going anywhere.
The chief had given this week off additionally to his regular time off, because of the anniversary of when he had lost 99. He was laying on his couch and glanced over at the incredibly large framed picture of 99 on his wall. He sighed.
There was a knock on the door. He was rousted out of his daydream of whisking 99 to an island paradise. He stood up and walked to the door he took his gun out of his and made his way cautiously to the door.
He opened the door and saw… 99. His mouth dropped and he smiled an ear to ear grin. He noticed that she was crying and realized it was very inappropriate for him to be smiling but he couldn't help it.
"99…?" He said in disbelief, "Wha… w-w-what…? 99?"
"Max," she sobbed, "V-v-v-victor, I-I-I-is a a a a a a a a…" She was crying too hard to go on. Max held her shoulders and looked into her eyes.
"99? What? You can tell me. I'd understand." She looked away and sobbed harder. She tried to pull away, but Max wasn't about to let her leave his life again.
"I don't… even… know, w-what I'm doing here…" She struggled with him some more, but Max held on to her with all his might, "Max! Let me go! Let me go please."
"No." He said and he pulled her close to him and wrapped his arms around. "I've got you, and I'm not ever letting you go again."
"Oh Max…" She looked into his eyes and nearly smiled for the first time in two months. She returned his embrace and cried again into his neatly pressed blue suit.
"Come in sit down, would you like to lie down?" He was leading her into the living room.
She slightly stopped crying, "I-I don't want to impose."
"Impose?" Max said almost choking on the word. He laughed, which caused her to wonder if he was sane or not. "Imposition? No way jose. Not in a million years. Not even in your wildest dreams. No imposition at all." She returned a smile amidst her dwindling tears. "So… will you tell me what's wrong, or possibly a cup of coffee or over lunch, no scratch that, dinner it's three."
"Oh Max." She smiled again. He was still holding her and set her down on the couch.
"Here you can use these." He handed her a box of tissues. "Here's the remote if you wanna watch T.V. I'll go get that coffee!" he rushed to the kitchen his smile reaching ear to ear again. She returned just as suddenly as she left he thought to himself.
He picked up his shoe phone and dialed CONTROL. Larabee picked up.
LARABEE: CONTROL headquarters Larabee speaking,
MAX: Larabee get me the Chief
LARABEE: Who's this?
MAX: It's Max
LARABEE: Max who?
MAX: Maxwell Smart, agent 86.
LARABEE: Oh that Max, hold please.
CHIEF: Control headquarters this is the chief speaking.
MAX: Chief you'll never believe, who showed up at my door!
CHIEF: Oh Max, how goes the vacation, doing you good?
MAX: is it ever? Guess who's blowing her nose with my tissues.
CHIEF: could you have used a less disgusting scenario?
MAX: Yes,
CHIEF: (sigh) Who?
MAX: Guess.
CHIEF: I'm not in the mood Max!
MAX: She's the most gorgeous woman in the world, tall, brunette, number instead of a name…
CHIEF: That sounds like you're describing, 99. (small laugh) But 99 lives on San Jirman island!
MAX: Not anymore chief. I'm telling you, she's sitting on my couch!
CHIEF: Congratulations! What are you talking to me for? Get back in there!
MAX: Right Chief, Bye!
Max poured two cups of coffee into two mugs and brought it out to 99. He nearly tripped over the waste paper basket he looked down and his eyes widened the basket was filled with tissues.
"99?" He said softly, she turned to him, her eyes red and puffy deep red tear marks running down her cheeks. Her mascara running something awful. She reached into her tissue box and came back with her hand empty.
Through her sobbing she choked out, "It's empty." She held out the box so he'd look at it. "Empty, like my life. Totally… and…u-utterly… empty."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his handkerchief, "Don't cry, Please. I don't want you to cry." She wiped her eyes and buried her face in his chest.
"I'm sorry." She told him, as he rocked her back and forth.
"You have no reason to be sorry, believe me." She handed him back his handkerchief. "Now, how about dinner?"
"Sounds great!" She had stopped crying.
"Did you bring anything with you, a suitcase or anything? Did you wanna change?"
"Wow, what an overwhelming amount of questions. Hold on…" She said with a little giggle (Max was relieved she stopped crying), "I didn't have time to pack, just my purse and, I don't have anything to change into!" She smiled.
"Well, do you want to go buy something?" He pulled his wallet from his back pocket. "I got a huge raise at CONTROL. Are you thinking of coming back? I missed you SO much."
"You can keep your money Max. I have mine and Victors credit cards!" She pulled them out of her purse and laughed. "So, dinner can be on Victor, I've been using his not mine. So? Do you want to go shopping? It's on Victor."
"Well…" Max said, thinking, "O.K. where shall we go?"
"Um…" She thought for a second, "Let's go to dinner first… We can… talk."
He smiled and fought back his urge to just grab her in his arms and kiss her, and never let her go. "That would be wonderful." He moved closer and wrapped his arms around her.
"Max?" She said, her eyes closed and moving closer to him. His lips found hers and kissed her. She gladly returned it.
"Yes?" He said when he pulled back.
"I missed you, too!"

Later in the restaurant 99 was explaining her current predicament, while they awaited their food. "Well as I was saying earlier, I had to get out and away! Victor's a…" she looked around cautiously and whispered, "A KAOS agent!"
Max did a double take with his drink and spit it all over the tables clothe. The other tables around them looked at him weirdly before returning to their meals. "How long have you known?"
"About three months. I've been living alone in our house, I turned him in. He's… h-h-he's… Oh Max, He's dead! I got everything, I've got a private airplane and the houses the money the casino… but I'm so lonely!" She looked at him her eyes looked tired, but still filled with the same strength and compassion that they always did.
He held her head as she let it rest on his shoulder, "You came back, there's something I have to tell you, that I wanted to tell you a long time ago but couldn't… I…"
"Yes Max?" She looked up her lips going toward his, ready for a kiss.
"I… I love you!" She smiled, "With all my heart and soul, and I'm never letting you go again." Max let himself go forward and kissed her fervently she held the back of his head and Max held her as close as humanly possible.
She pulled back, "I love you too. I always have and I always will!"
"Then, I have something for you, if you want it and a question for you." He reached into his pocket and pulled something out, it was a little box, a box for a ring. He opened the box revealing a ring with a large diamond. "Will you marry me?"
"Will I marry you?!? That's the easiest question to answer, I've ever been asked! Of course I'll marry you!" She hugged him and then kissed him passionately again.

"And do you Maxwell Smart take this woman, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do." Max replied and looked at his bride.
"Then by the power infested in me I now pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride." He turned again and kissed her.

99 and Max are partners again at CONTROL and couldn't be happier. Or could they?
"Max?" 99 asked tenderly, "I've got something to tell you." She smiled and wrapped her arms around him.
"What is it, sweetheart?" He smiled back and rocked her in his arms. She put her head to his.
"You're going to be a father!" She smiled at him and he looked at her with sheer disbelief.
"Really?" She nodded eagerly, "I'm gonna be a father! I'm gonna be a father! I gotta… I gotta… I gotta… I gotta do somethin'!"
"You can start by calming down, Max!" She laughed at him as he rushed around the apartment.
"Calm down!" He shouted with a huge smile, "How can I calm down? I'm gonna be a dad!"

"She's beautiful, 99!" Max exclaimed holding his daughter in his arms. "The spitting image of her mother!" She smiled at him.
They were in their apartment and Max, 99 and their new addition, Maxine. They danced slowly while music spilled out of the stereo.
"Max?" she said while messing up his hair. "I love you, SO much!"
"I love you, too, 99. I'll love you forever and ever," He told her.
"That's an awfully long time." She smiled.
"But as long as I'm with you, it won't seem long enough! Let's get something to eat. I think Maxine's hungry too. I'll feed her you can go change if you want to and then we can go to dinner."
"OK." She smiled and skipped up the stairs.
"99?" Max said as she was almost the whole way up the stairs.
"Yes, Max?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For giving birth, for marrying me, for coming back to me." She smiled.
"And thank you, for taking me back." She kissed him and ran up the stairs to change. He sighed and thought about his good fortune.

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear, Mommy, Happy birthday to you." Max and Maxine sung "Blow out the candles Mommy." Maxine commented.
Max stopped her before she could, "Don't forget to make a wish." She nodded. Then blew out all her candles.
"I've got a surprise birthday present for you." Max told her, "Maxine? Go get it."
"What is it?" 99 asked as Max held her.
"You'll see." Max said. "Just wait a minute." He smiled and she returned it. Just then 99 heard a loud honk and startled her.
"What's that?"  She went to the window and gasped. Maxine was sitting on the hood of a blue car, waving to her. She reached over and gave Max a well-deserved passionate kiss. "It's beautiful."
"You wanna take it for a drive?" He held out the keys and dangled them above her head she grabbed them and clenched them in her fist.
"Would I?" She grabbed the keys and rushed down to the car Maxine was waiting for her. She tickled Maxine's sides, "You were in on this weren't you."
She nodded with a big smile on her face, "I picked it out! Daddy wanted to get you a yellow one, and the wrong model too!"
"Well, I'm just lucky you were there to help him." Max finally caught up with her.
Out of breath he panted, "Take it… for a … drive…" He let out a huge breath and finished, "99."

"Drive…" Max tossed.
"Max." 99 turned to him trying to wake him up.
"99…?"
"What? …Max what? MAX!"
He woke up panting and he wiped the sweat off his brow. "99." He sighed when he saw her sitting next to him.
"I'm right here Max," She stroked his hair as he nestled his head into her chest. "What happened?"
"I had the strangest dream, you went off and married Victor Royale and came back to me crying because he died and then I married you, and you had a baby, just one though, and it was a girl named Maxine, but she didn't look like our Maxine, she looked exactly like you, as a kid, not a woman. I got you a car for your birthday."
99 sighed, "Oh Max." He was fine.
