Adam, then, really is a special kind of Angel; he is not a "child" of Lilith like the other Angels; he is the father of the Angels.

SECTION 5. Section 4 above would explain why Kaoru calls humans “Lilim” in contradistinction to the Angels who are not “Lilim.” This could mean that while the Angels come from Adam and Lilith, the humans do not. The humans come from Lilith alone, but because they come from Lilith, they are also Angels. Humans, as the Lilim, are the 18th Angel, and this was revealed in Misato’s monologue in EoE and in Neo Genesis Evangelion canonical texts. Furthermore, this help explain why the Angels wanted to merge with Adam but not with Lilith, as was explained by Kaoru. If the Angels do not want to merge with Lilith, there must be sufficient reason to make a distinction between Lilith and Adam. Perhaps this sufficient distinction is that merger with Adam does not involve the Lilim but merger with Lilith does. Furthermore, SEELE wanted a Lilith merger (dependence on the Lance of Longinus, on EVA-01 as the "clone of Lilith," and on Lilith herself) as a prerequisite for Human Complementation. This would give us the following schema:

The premises and conclusions found here, in Section 5, are further discussed below in Part IV.

SECTION 6. Another possibility (in opposition to Section 4 above) is that Adam is the source of Lilith, and Lilith in turn, produced the Angels and the humans. This would satisfy the given facts taken from the Episodes, EoE, and the RCB:

But this would seem to cause problems because there would be no difference between Angels and humans. This seems to contradict the facts. Angels want to merge with Adam to cause Third Impact, but humans, specifically SEELE, place great emphasis on Lilith. But if both Angels and humans have the same genealogy, then why is there a difference in goals between Angels and humans? It seems that the conclusions in Section 4 and Section 5 are preferable to the conclusions here, in Section 6.

SECTION 7. If we wish to pursue Section 6 above and at the same time provide sufficient reason for why Angels would wish to merge with Adam but not with Lilith while humans find Lilith to be necessary for Third Impact, then we can turn to an analysis of Natures:

If we further assume that Nature Y is abhorrent to the Angels, then we can explain why Angels would wish to merge with Adam (who does not possess Nature Y) and would wish to avoid Lilith (who possesses Nature Y) and find little problem with destroying humans (who possess Nature Y).

SECTION 8. The discussion of hypothetical Natures in Section 7 following from the assumptions of Section 6 would seem to make Section 6 more plausible than Section 5 (or at least as equally plausible as Section 5). However, the analysis of Natures can also be extended to Section 5 to make it even stronger:

SECTION 9. On further possibility is Oedipal Angelogenesis. While bizarre and problematic, the following scheme can be made to fit the given facts taken from the Episodes, EoE, and the RCB:

SECTION 10. Adam is called "the first human" in the episodes. This is either meant to be taken literally or this is a mere poetic or metaphorical expression. If this was meant literally, this would be a contradiction, because Adam definitely is not human or one of the Lilim in composition, powers, or stature. It would seem, therefore, that Adam is "the first human" in a poetic or metaphorical sense.

ARTICLE 2. ON THE NATURE OF THE SECOND IMPACT.

SECTION 1. The Second Impact was the mysterious phenomenon (whatever that may be) that could have resulted in many things (whatever those may be), but one sure thing was the melting of Antarctica. This must have been the result of tremendous heat and energy, as Antarctica is not completely made of ice like the Arctic. Antarctica is a continent of land covered by ice. The heat released must have been enough to also melt and disintegrate portions of land in the continent (such as what happens to soil in a thermonuclear blast, Bikini Atoll being a good example).

SECTION 2. Adam caused on purpose, by accident, or by being a mere instrument (it could have been the fault, on purpose or othewise, of the Katsuragi research team) the melting of Antarctica that eventually became known as the Second Impact, as was shown in the Episodes and EoE.

SECTION 3. Adam was either reverted into the embryo that eventually was grafted onto the right hand of Gendo or was cloned resulting in another embryo that was identical with Adam. This reasoning stems from the fact that if an Angel could be easily reverted into an embryo, then this should have been an option to use against the other Angels. However, if it was the reversion process that caused the release of energy that melted Antarctica, then reverting any of the other Angels back into an embryo would have resulted in another catastrophe as large as the melting of Antarctica. This would then explain why NERV and SEELE never ordered that the other Angels be reverted into embryos.

SECTION 4. It is also possible that Angels cannot be easily reverted into embryos. In this hypothetical case, Adam was killed using the Lance of Longinus, and the Adam embryo in the Episodes and EoE is a clone. It seems easier to kill a giant using a powerful lance (and then to grow an embryo clone from the left over material) than to somehow rewind growth and revert it into an embryo. Dialogue from the Episodes imply that the Adam embryo is not a clone but is really the original Adam reverted into embryo form, but such dialogue never conclusively states that the Adam embryo is the original Adam. Statements about the Adam embryo, such as “Behold, this is Adam,” can apply as much to a clone of Adam as to the original Adam, for a clone of Adam is still Adam.

SECTION 5. Regardless of whether the Adam embryo in Gendo's hand is the real Adam or a clone, the cloning of Adam would still seem to be a necessity. Cloning (followed by extensive modification) would explain the existence of the EVAs which are based on Adam in their body structure and biological composition. Furthermore, if EVA-01, and only EVA-01, is from Lilith (see Part IV, Article 2, Section 1 below, or consult the RCB glossary entry on EVA-01), then the other EVA units would most likely have been from Adam. Of course, the EVAs would not have been "true" clones, for then Kaoru would have merged with them instead of looking for the "real" Adam. Perhaps they were "modified" or "non-true" clones, much as Rei is not a "true" clone of Yui.

SECTION 6. The Lance of Longinus either was with Adam to begin with or was with Lilith. If it was not with Adam to begin with, the Katsuragi research team must have brought it to Antarctica to use against Adam, for Gendo and Kouzou went to retrieve from Antarctica after the Second Impact. If this is the case, then the Lance of Longinus was driven into the crucified Lilith at Terminal Dogma beneath NERV HQ after the Second Impact.

PART III. HUMANS AND THE THIRD IMPACT.

ARTICLE 1. HUMANS AS THE 18TH ANGEL.

SECTION 1. If humans are the 18th Angel, then humans are similar to the 11th Angel, Iruel, from Episode 13, which is composed of billions of virus-sized particles which all have a single mind. Humans, however, do not have a single mind but suffer individual loneliness and imperfection. It is this fragmented incompleteness that needs complementation, or in other words, completion. This was to be achieved in the Human Complementation or Human Instrumentality Project, SEELE’s version of the Third Impact.

SECTION 2. According to Misato’s monologue in EoE, the Angels were other possibilities of human life, but ones who threw away their form. It is this throwing away of the form that was to be achieved in Human Complementation.

ARTICLE 2. SEELE AND THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS.

SECTION 1. The Dead Sea Scrolls or Qumran Scrolls are so named because they were found near Qumran and the Dead Sea. They were written by the Essenes, a community of Jews during and immediately after the time of Jesus. It is generally believed that not all of the Scrolls have been found and that several were lost or stolen and are in the hands of private collectors and smugglers.

SECTION 2. SEELE follows its own secret collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In Episode 17, Gendo and Kouzou had a conversation about how SEELE follows the schedule prescribed in the Dead Sea Scrolls. These Scrolls held by SEELE are either part of the Qumran Scrolls and are therefore prophetic in nature, or the Dead Sea Scrolls referred to by SEELE are actually a collection of modern and original plans, calculations, theories, and timelines recently created by SEELE based on scientific and mathematical research into Angels and Human Complementation (perhaps using Magi-type supercomputers to make probability-estimate “predictions”) and simply codenamed “Dead Sea Scrolls” for dramatic purposes.

SECTION 3. If SEELE’s Dead Sea Scrolls really are Qumran Scrolls, then these scrolls are of a prophetic nature and the authors of these Scrolls who lived during Biblical New Testament times have seen into the future in order to foretell about the coming of the Angels.

SECTION 4. If Section 3 above is true, then an explanation for precognition and knowledge of the future (psychic powers) needs to be posited. Perhaps the Essenes were able to see into the future precisely because humans are the 18th Angel and possess some of the Angelic powers or wisdom of Lilith.

SECTION 5. If Section 3 above is true, then this would seem to imply that SEELE has secret Scrolls and have always had these secret Scrolls, for none of the known Scrolls held by museums and research institutions speak about the events of Neo Genesis Evangelion, and the odds of SEELE conveniently finding lost Scrolls around the Dead Sea area or in the black market are slim. This would further imply the possibility that SEELE is actually the modern-day descendant of the Essenes and inherited the Scrolls from the Essenes. Furthermore, the fact that the Essenes-SEELE conspiracy (which would therefore closely resemble the “Illuminati” or “Magi” spoken of by conspiracy-theory advocates) has had close to two thousand years to prepare would explain why SEELE holds such power and wealth and influence.

ARTICLE 3. THIRD IMPACT.

SECTION 1. The “official” explanation given in the Episodes was that the Third Impact would be caused by contact between an Angel and Adam, and Adam was supposedly kept underground below New Tokyo 3. The “official” explanation was that the EVAs and NERV existed to prevent this from happening. The truth, however, was that the objective of the Instrumentality Project under SEELE was actually to initiate a kind of Third Impact called Human Complementation. The EVA project was not so much a defense against Angels but more of a way to realize the Human Complementation Project. Upon artificially initiating a Third Impact, all humans would shed their human forms and evolve to a new stage

SECTION 2. SEELE's objective differed from that of NERV (that is, Gendo and Fuyutsuki had another plan). Gendo and Kouzou work at cross-purposes against SEELE, and this is further confirmed in EoE when Gendo reveals his plan to use Rei III, the Adam embryo grafted on his right hand, and Lilith to start his own Third Impact that would be under his control.

SECTION 3. In EoE, we see the Geofront become the Black Moon and fly into space between the hands of Lilith. All people loose their AT Fields and liquefy into LCL leaving their clothes behind. Red balls and glowing crosses appear in place of the people, and the red balls floats up into the Black Moon and into the hands of Lilith. This would seem to be the unification of souls within Lilith. Humans as the 18th Angel are fragmented individual children of Lilith born through Lilith’s “egg” (the Black Moon). Human Complementation seems to be a reversal of the process, calling together all human souls into union within Lilith through the “egg.”

SECTION 4. If the goal of Human Complementation was to merge humans into one being where each individual, lonely, and flawed human soul is complemented (completed) by the union of all the other souls, then Third Impact seems to have failed because Lilith broke up. Shinji, protected inside EVA-01, rejected Human Complementation in Third Impact and chose to remain human. The unification of souls that was taking place inside Lilith halted as a result and Lilith began to break up into pieces. The Black Moon split into segments like a bizarre zygote and the red balls oozed out like blood and scattered outward, turning the Earth red. Rei assured him that things will be fine if he makes the choice to remain human, for those with the will to live can return and create new bodies for themselves. Asuka, for example, washes up onto the shore of the sea of red, and they are like a new Adam and Eve. It seems that Third Impact was truly a failure, and that all the other people died and liquefied. The union of souls that was taking place inside Lilith ended, and blood was jettisoned into orbit and into the seas, leaving a ring of red around a scorched planet with no surviving ecosystem. All this happened because Shinji rejected Human Complementation. It seems, then, that billions turned into organic liquid simply for nothing. Of course, it is not really for “nothing,” since Shinji discovered “something.” He learned that he is afraid of getting hurt and that he does hold deep in his heart a secret hope to be loved. In the final analysis, one can conclude that the entire population of the world was liquefied and the Earth was scorched simply so that one depressed little boy can “grow up” and “get in touch with his feelings.” What does Shinji do with his new self-discovery and new knowledge about his emotions? He attempts to strangle Asuka on the shores of a sea of blood. In rejecting Human Complementation and stopping the meta-evolution of the species into a unified Lilith, Shinji has committed one of the most selfish, stupid, and meaningless choices in history. His choice would make the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden pale in comparison. The closing words of EoE by Asuka are appropriate.

SECTION 5. It is a distant possibility that Third Impact succeeded if one pretends that the physical break-up of Lilith was only a purely physical one, and the rest of humanity had evolved into a spiritual super-being that is no longer visible. One can pretend that just as the individual humans shed their bodies and the bodies turned into LCL while the soul went to the Black Moon and Lilith, the super-being shed the gigantic body of Rei-Lilith-Adam and the super-soul went to the Sea of Dirac. The 12th Angel, Leliel, was closely attuned to the Sea of Dirac, so perhaps unified humanity, the 18th Angel Lilim in its true form, has moved to the Sea of Dirac. This, however, does not seem to be implied by the depressing tone of EoE.

SECTION 6. If the goal of the project, however, was to stop humanity’s evolutionary dead-end and force a next step in evolution, then Third Impact may have succeeded in one small way. In EoE, the EVA-01, with the soul of Yui, went into outer space. That Yui is the soul of EVA-01 as a result of her “fatal” test run of EVA-01 is established in EoE and in the Episodes. Yui said that after billions of years when the Earth and Sun expire, she will remain, for the EVA-01 is immortal. This is corroborated by the fact that EVA-01 has acquired an S2 engine from the 14th Angel, named “Zeruel” or the “Angel of Might,” in Episode 19. Furthermore, since she brought with her the Lance of Longinus, it is a vague possibility that she can use it to call forth a Tree of Life and start life on another planet as if she was a new Lilith.

SECTION 7. EVA-01 was not the only one that proceeded to go into space. The glowing crosses also went out into space. Were these crosses humans who had taken the next step of evolution? But the Yui entity said that she would be utterly alone. So it seems that nobody else went with her. It would seem that the crosses were nothing more than phenomena connected to the attempted Human Complementation (that is, they were nothing more than energy traces and “visual effects”) or were the mechanisms unleashed by the nine EVA units to liquefy the rest of humanity as a prelude to Human Complementation.

SECTION 8. For all intents and purposes, then, one can safely conclude that Human Complementation was a failure and Third Impact was a human and ecological disaster of epic proportions. This is the meaning of Neo Genesis Evangelion. It is a new Genesis, a new original sin, but this time, instead of being exiled from the Garden of Eden, a human by the name of Shinji completely destroyed the Garden and all life in it.

PART IV. SPECIAL QUESTIONS.

This Part is entitled "Special Questions" and contains discussion on issues that may have rightly belonged Parts I to III, but where only added late in the drafting of this document. However, these parts were written before publication of this document. Parts added after publication are included as "Subsections" in the proper existing Sections.

ARTICLE 1. ANGELIC THIRD IMPACT.

SECTION 1. If the Angels wish to merge with Adam but do not wish to merge with Lilith, then there must be something substantially and significantly different between the two that would make an Adam-catalyzed Third Impact favorable for Angels but a Lilith-catalyzed Third Impact unfavorable for Angels.

SECTION 2. Based on Part II, Article 1 (especially Sections 4 and 5) above, humans are Lilim, the 18th Angel, who come from Lilith alone, while the 3rd to 17th Angels are what we shall now call “Adaim.”

SECTION 3. Perhaps the Adaim do not want a Lilith-catalyzed Third Impact because somehow the Lilim (who come from Lilith alone) would lead to complications that the Adaim find unacceptable, or, to reason it out from another perspective, perhaps the Adaim prefer an Adam-catalyzed Third Impact because this would somehow remove or lessen what we have theorized to be Lilim-related complications (because the Lilim do not in any way come from Adam), whatever those “complications” may be.

SECTION 4. One possible reason why the Adaim want an Adam-catalyzed Third Impact is that a Lilith-catalyzed Third Impact would draw all the Lilim back to Lilith (as was seen in EoE) and the Angels would have to “share” and then become “overwhelmed” by the sheer flood of human souls much like the Magi were overwhelmed by Iruel in Episode 13.

ARTICLE 2. LILITH AS ORIGIN OF EVA-01 AND THE LANCE OF LONGINUS.

SECTION 1. As was seen in the Episodes, when the Lance of Longinus went into lunar orbit and landed on the Moon, SEELE was concerned because the Lance was to play a great role in Human Complementation. EVA-01 became the one and only substitute for Lilith as the catalyst for Human Complementation. This would mean that among all of the EVAs, only EVA-01 was made using parts from Lilith. This would explain why Lilith was missing such a large mass of her body. This would also explain why Gendo prioritized the safety of EVA-01 more than the safety of the other EVA units. This would also explain why the JSSDF covered EVA-01 in Bakelite to prevent the Children from taking it away, since SEELE wanted to use EVA-01 for Complementation, while EVA-02 was considered expendable.

SECTION 2. Furthermore, the fact that EVA-01 was important as a Lilith substitute and the fact that the Lance of Longinus was very important for Human Complementation would seem to imply that the Lance of Longinus, like EVA-01, also came from Lilith, perhaps as a body part or was manufactured from her body parts. This theory is compatible with the conclusions in Part II, Article 2, Section 6 above. The Lance of Longinus was taken (taken from Lilith if it was already there in its original form or “taken” from Lilith in that parts of Lilith were removed and then manufactured into the Lance) and used against Adam. Afterwards, it was driven into the crucified Lilith at Terminal Dogma, perhaps as a way to keep her from regenerating completely and to force her to keep bleeding the useful LCL.

SECTION 3. Furthermore, the spiral pattern of the Lance of Longinus resembles the spiral pattern of the 16th Angel, Armisael, as seen in Episode 23, especially when EVA-01 breaks it apart in the last part of EoE. Both the Lance and Armisael can penetrate AT Fields by generating some kind of negative AT Field. Furthermore, the fact that an S2 Engine has been described by Katsuragi as being a “super-solenoid,” one can imagine that it is some kind of double-spiraled double-solenoid. This theory would explain why Armisael does not have a visible S2 Engine in the form of a ball or nut like the other Angels because Armisael is one giant S2 Engine.

SECTION 4. Similarly, the Lance of Longinus may be something similar, a coiled double-solenoid, stripped from the body of Lilith. This would also explain why SEELE was able to arm its EVA units with Lances because in perfecting the technology to provide S2 Engines for all its EVA units, it also found the technology to make Lances. Finally, one can then theorize that the Lance of Longinus is a necessary component of Lilith, and this would explain why Lilith never fully regenerated until Rei III merged with her in EoE, for Rei III brought inside her womb Adam who had an embryonic S2 Engine.

SECTION 5. If the Lance of Longinus is a part of Lilith, it should have been reabsorbed and regenerated into the body after it was thrust into her. However, if it generated a negative AT Field, which is what it seems to do naturally in the instances where it has pierced Angel and EVA alike, then Lilith would have difficulty reabsorbing it. Besides, if the Lance is Lilith’s S2 Engine or a vital component that is very much like an S2 Engine, then it is possible that Lilith would not have had enough power to reabsorb something with such a strong negative AT Field, much like a human being with his or her head cut off would have difficulty putting the head back on after a few months of going headless.

ARTICLE 3. WHETHER NEO GENESIS EVANGELION IS ANTI-CHRISTIAN.

SECTION 1. Anti-matter is the opposite of matter and would annihilate it upon contact. In this way, NGE if taken too seriously is definitely anti-Christian in that the Lilithicentric universe that is the foundation of its fictional storyline is not compatible with a Christocentric cosmology and view of salvation history.

SECTION 2. A Nazi is anti-Semitic and hates Jews and some would go to great lengths to kill Jews. In this way, NGE is not in any way anti-Christian in that it does not seek to destroy, supplant, or ridicule Christianity in any way. Much as many artists have borrowed religious signs and symbolism to add greater depth and structure to their works, NGE does the same. It is not purposefully, nor is it even obliquely, Satanic. It may have what could be called “New Age” overtones, but that is only if one believes that postmodernist and poststructuralist philosophy is “New Age.”

SECTION 3. Of course, Christian groups and families are free to avoid NGE and even condemn it if they think its borrowing of symbolism and structure from the apocryphal and non-apocryphal narratives, legends, traditions, and beliefs of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic institution is dangerous or misleading to young Christian minds. One cannot truly be surprised if a Christian family who already believes that the media is evil and is a tool of Satan also believes the same of NGE. They are free to condemn NGE, much as Muslims are free to avoid pork and condemn the eating of pork, pacifists are free to condemn war, and other groups are free to avoid and condemn racism.

SECTION 4. It can be argued, however, that NGE is no more damaging to Christian values, beliefs, and morality than Nike’s “Just do it” campaign and a whole slew of other cultural and media phenomena.

SECTION 5. If a good Christian adolescent should become depressed, confused, or deranged due to NGE, that may be damning evidence against NGE. However, it may also be a sign that the child was already alienated, was already suffering from maladaptive cognitive or guilt or self-esteem or behavioral patterns, or lacked a healthy peer support network. These are things that a conservative Christian family should focus on, and not annihilating “evil” anime, for sons and daughters of religious families do suffer from ridicule and alienation quite a lot and suffer stress by being torn between rigorous family expectations (that the adolescent may misinterpret as being too unforgiving of sin and error) and peer and social pressures.

SECTION 6. NGE is definitely for mature audiences only. This is also the case because an immature audience, even if it is composed of working professionals, would not appreciate the aesthetic, symbolic, pre-symbolic, Jungian, literary, and religious tones anyway.

PART V. AMENDMENTS.

This part was included to hold additions to this document that cannot be included in the existing four Parts above.
