Speeding in Melbourne Beach

To protect and serve

The little beach town where we live has 3200 residents and 9 full-time police officers. The town is 1.8 miles long and 0.55 mile wide at the center of town. I really don't know whether the police department is financially self-supporting, or not, but I do know they really do give out a lot of traffic tickets.

There are no traffic lights in Melbourne Beach, but there are two "all-way stops" on the main street through town. If you're ever in the area, I'd advise you to come to a full stop if you are at one of these intersections. The local police are quite intolerant of people who slow down to 1 mph and continue, even though there is no other traffic at the intersection.

The Riverside Drive speed limit sign shown on the previous page is strictly enforced, as are the other posted limits in the other parts of town. Also, you probably will want to ensure that your wheels do not touch any solid yellow lines anywhere within the city limits.

I don't think the police department here is considered a profit-center. I have heard of such practice in other municipalities, but I doubt if that's the case here. Just be careful, please.
