Do I think Holden Caulfield was a man of faith?

After reading Catcher in the Rye I do believe that Holden was a man of faith. To many people, from a first impression, he may have seemed to be a faithless, moral less teenager who seemed to hate most everyone and everything. But after reading deeper in to the story Holdens true character developed and it was easier to see that deep down Holden was truly a man of faith, but he showed it unordinary ways.

The way Holden truly showed his faith was through his love for his younger sister. He may have never fully shared his ideas on religious aspects of faith, although he certainly did not hold religion in his highest respect, as seen when he used school chapels as a place to get drunk with his friends at school. However, Holden believed in other things like the protection of his younger sister and preservation of the joys of childhood. To do this Holden tries to make sure that his younger sister doesn't have to experience the bad things he came across in life. He tried his hardest to be a good role model for her and got terribly angry with himself when he messed up, such as when he got expelled from school again. Holden always kept his sister in mind while he was out, and always remembered to buy her something nice for her birthday, like a record he would know she would get a kick out of.

Holden not only cared about his sister, but also about the well being of all children. Holden was appalled when noticed all the obscene writings on the walls of school buildings or museums. He didn't believe that children should have to see those words written on the walls. Holden realised that the children in the world are still innocent and have yet to be corrupted by diffrent people of the world. Holden wanted to act as the Catcher in the Rye for the children to keep them from being corrupted. Only faith in the children and himself would make him believe he could do that. He may not have always been the best person, and he had somewhat distorted morals and visions of the world but he eventually overcame those through faith in his sister and the innocent children of the world.
