The idea for this roaster came from RK Drums. I really liked the look of his product, however, I needed a smaller version, so my father-in-law helped me convert a smaller, tabletop gas grill into an A-1 coffee roaster. It needs a few adjustments,
but it's much more effective than the stovetop method I started out on.
The roast is more consistent and the method feels less 'chincy'.

The whole project took about two Saturdays and one evening after work (which was to pull the motor I use to turn the drum, out of the door of an early 90's Cadillac Sedan DeVille.) That was probably the hardest part. Everything else was just time-consuming work, assisting my father-in-law in the drilling and cutting of many scrap parts, found in the dark recesses of the garage. |
These portable grills are made to run off the disposable propane cans, which only seem to last 5-7 roasts. Luckily I found an adaptor hose that allowed to me hook up a 20lb propane cylinder which will most likely last a whole year at my current roasting demands. |
As an update, since I've had this now for over eight months, the greatest difficulty I've encountered is the setup & takedown. I have to assemble and disassemble each time I roast, since I can't leave it out in the open. My next project is to convert a full size gas grill, which I'll be able to leave assembled, thus saving time and energy!
