I believe my kids have the right to choose their own religion. As their parents, we do not force them to believe the same as we do. If they ask questions about something that contradicts our own beliefs, we simply try to explain it the best we can about what others believe on the subject and let them make up their own minds on which explanation to believe. We encourage them to make up their own minds. We encourage them to learn what they feel they should on their own time. I don't think it is right to force one religion on all just because it is a largely and widely believed system. Widely believed is not the same as unanimously believed. Diversity is at the heart of this great nation and we should pride ourselves on that. Our ability to learn and adapt is impressive. Our ability to compare and accept is as well. But both need some improvement.
If you put Intelligent Design in schools, perhaps they should also include atheism and agnosticism in the curriculum. After all, they exist too. If one religion is included, they all should be. There should be a class just for that, but make it an elective and not mandatory. Oh wait, there is such a class, at least in some places. It is called Mythology. The study of the beliefs of other cultures. Ok so maybe we are not Norse or Greek or believe that Zeus or Ares rule but the guidelines are the same. Those subjects are religions. They are beliefs of the Norse and Greek. If we put in the beliefs of the Americans, the class would have to last from Kindergarten to Senior year just to cover all of the different aspects.
I am an American. I believe that the people have the right to choose for themselves what to believe. They have to right to believe without others pushing their own beliefs on them. And we have the right to say "I don't want to believe what you believe". We don't need to become another place where our lives are dictated to us by some other person. We do not need someone else telling us what to believe, or what the "truth" is. Whatever our beliefs are, that is OUR TRUTH. And you do not have the right to tell us it's not.
If you want your kids to learn academics, send them to school. If you want them to learn religion, send them to church. After all, isn't that what church is for?? And (pardon me) God knows, we have enough churches in this country!
