Descendants of Christian Ovesen AKA Overson

Notes

1. Christian Ovesen AKA Overson

Birth: family records list a variety of spellings for the birth town, ie: Maareskow, Moreshow, Moreskov, etc. The correct spelling is Mareskov, with the a having a small circle over it to distinquish it from a regular "a". The pronunciation of this Danish character is like that of a long "o", which results in the Moreskov spelling. Also, in early Scandinavian history the "a" with a circle was rendered as "aa" with the same pronunciation. the "v" on the end is almost silent, which leads to the "skow" pronunciation. Svendborg was previously known as Nyborg.

From the microfilm record (025696) of the Emigration from the Scandinavian Mission it is discovered that Christian Ovesen (along with his brothers Fredrich and Jens, his sister Maren, his step father Lars Pedersen, his mother Maren Pedersen, his step brother Ove Pedersen, and his step sister Karen Pedersen) departed from Denmark on the Ship Humbolt. In addition, an excerpt from the History of the Scandinavian Mission, p.161-167, by Andrew Jenson indicates that the Humbolt left Denmark on April 8, 1862 and departed for Hamburg, Germany. "On Wednesday, April 9th, the `Humbolt', Capt. H.B. Boysen, sailed from Hamburg with 323 emigrating Saints, in care of Elder Hans C. Hansen, who now, after laboring as a missionary in Scandinavia, was returning to his home in Zion. After a successful voyage this company of emigrants arrived in New York May 20th, thence the journey westward was continued by railroad and steamboat to Florence, Neb., which was the outfitting place for the journey across the Plains this year, and where the emigrants of that company arrived in the beginning of June. Fourteen persons died on sea and land up to the date of the company's arrival in Florence."
