Parshat Dvarim

Overview

Dvarim (Deuteronomy) 1:1-3:23 Haphtorah: Yeshiyahu (Isaiah) 1:1-27

These are the words of Moshe

  • Recapping story of the wandering
  • Wilderness journey over in the fortieth year, eleventh month, on the first day of the month
  • Hashem had given the Land: Land of the Canaanite, Lebanon, until the great river, the Euphrates River.
  • "May Hashem, the Gd of your forefathers, add to you a thousand times yourselves, and bless you as He has spoken of you." – Dvarim 1:11

    Judges appointed

  • heads of tribes: leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for tribes
  • Do not show favoritism in judgement. And any matter too difficult I told you to bring to me.

    The spies

  • Moshe told the people to go up to possess it when the first arrived at the border
  • People insisted on sending spies to see which road to take and to which cities to come
  • Moshe agreed and took 12 spies—one of each tribe.
  • Spies brought back the fruit of Eshcol – the huge cluster of grapes
  • They brought back an evil report of giants in the Land
  • In spite of Moshe’s admonition, they instilled fear and rebellion into the people
  • Hashem declared that none of the men of the generation, except for Calev ben Yephunneh and Yehoshua ben Nun, would enter the Land
  • The people tried to get Him to relent
  • They decide to go up, but they are told that He will not be with them.

    Mount Seir – Edom

  • Edom promised to Esau’s children; Israel told not to take it.
  • Israel paid for food and water.

    Moab

  • Hashem said not to distress Moab, go to war with them, or take their land.
  • Children of Lot give Ar as inheritance.
  • The Emim (giants) were displaced by Moab, and the Horites by Edom.

    Ammon

  • Hashem said not to distress Ammon, for it is an inheritance of the children of Lot.
  • They displaced the Rephaim (giants), who they called Zamzumim.

    Hashem commands Israel to go into the Land

  • Traveled between Kadesh-barnea to Zered Brook for 38 years, until generation—men of war (men over 21 years of age)--died out.
  • Hashem illustrated how the children of Esau, Moab, and Ammon had displaced giants in their lands.
  • Hashem says He has placed dread of Israel into the peoples in the Land.

    Sihon conquered first

  • Hashem hardened the heart of Sihon, king of Heshbon.
  • Hashem ordered the people to go take Heshbon.
  • Israel destroyed the cities, killing all the people, taking the animals and booty for themselves—from Aroer to Gilead.

    Defeat of Og

  • Hashem commanded not to fear Og, king of Bashan.
  • Israel took all 60 cities—fortified with high walls, doors, and bars--of the region of Argob.
  • Destroyed all the people, took the animals and booty of the cities for themselves.
  • Og was last king of the Rephaim, whose iron bed was nine cubits long and four cubits wide.

    Inheritance of Reuven, Gad, and Manasseh

  • To Reuven and Gad Moshe gave from Aroer, half the mountain of Gilead.
  • The rest of Gilead and the entire Bashan (the kingdom of Og) was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh.
  • Yair ben Manasseh took the region of Argov to the border of Geshurite.
  • Machir ben Manasseh was given Gilead.
  • Moshe reminds them of their promise to help the rest of the tribes secure their inheritance before settling in theirs.

    Words to Yehoshua
    I commanded Yehoshua at that time, saying, "Your eyes have seen everything that Hashem, your Gd, has done to these two kings; so will Hashem do to all the kings where you cross over. You shall not fear them, for Hashem, your Gd—He shall wage war for you." – Dvarim 3:21-22
