• Oppression of the king that “did not know Yosef” (1:8-22)
  Pharaoh told the people that the Israelites might join their enemies.<
  • First stage: Set taxes on them
  • Second stage: Made them slaves to build Pithom and Ramses
  • Third stages: They embittered their lives
  • “Final solution”: Killing of the newborn males
  Hebrew midwives Shifrah and Puah

• Birth of Moshe (2:1-10)
  Amram and Yocheved, parents of Moshe
  Moshe hidden for three months
  He is put into the ark in the Nile
  Miriam watches, as the Egyptian princess finds him
  Miriam offers to get a nursemaid for him

• Moshe kills the Egyptian(2:11-15)
  Moshe sees and Egyptian beating a Hebrew and kills him
  Later he sees two Hebrews fighting and tries to stop them. They ask if he is going to kill them like he did the Egyptian.
  Moshe flees Egypt

• Yitro and his daughters (2:16-22)
  Moshe defends Yitro’s daughter by the well from shepherds harassing them.
  Yitro tells his daughters to bring him home
  Moshe marries Tzipporah
  His first son is named Gershom, for “I was a stranger in a foreign land.”

• Situation in Egypt changes with the death of Pharoah (2:23-25)
  The king that wanted to kill Moshe dies.
  Gd hears the cries of His people.

• The burning bush (3:1-4:17)
  Moshe was tending the sheep of Yitro in the wilderness and came to Horeb.
  An angel of Gd appeared in the heart of a fire in the midst of a thornbush.
  As he approaches, he hears Gd call to him.
  He is told to take off his shoes, for he is on holy ground.
  Gd tells of the plight of the Hebrews in Egypt and of His plan to take them to Canaan.
  Moshe objects that he is not capable of the task.
  Gd reveals His Name “I shall be that which I wish to be!”
  He says he wants the people to go to the wilderness to make sacrifices, that He will bring them out of Egypt.
  Signs:
  • staff into a snake
  • His hand becoming leprous and then whole again
  • Gd further says if that doesn’t work, He will turn the water to blood. Moshe objects that he is slow of speech.
  Gd says he will have Aharon speak for him.
  

• Moshe takes his leave of Yitro (3:18-20)

• Israel is My firstborn son (3:21-23)

• Tzipporah circumcises Moshe’s son (3:24-26)
  The angel of Gd comes to kill Moshe.
  Tzipporah circumcises the boy and says Moshe is a “bridegroom of blood” to her.

• Aharon goes out to meet Moshe (4:27- 28)
  Aharon is told to go out to meet Moshe.
  Moshe tells him about all the signs and his instructions.

• Aharon and Moshe meet with the elders (4:29-31)
  Aharon speaks and Moshe performs the signs for the elders

• Moshe and Aharon meet Pharaoh (5:1-5)
  Moshe and Aharon go to Pharaoh to tell him to let the people go.
  Pharaoh asks who is their Gd.
  Pharaoh says the people are lazy.

• Pharaoh increases the burden on the Israelites (5:6-23)
  He orders that they not be given straw, but their quota has to remain the same.
  The taskmasters are beaten for the lack of bricks and complain to Moshe and Aharon.

• Hashem says to Moshe that now He is going to act (6:1)
  Hashem tells Moshe that when He’s through the Egyptians will drive the Israelites out.
