The episode opens on Van, sitting in
his office, with three other superior officers.
“I don’t know if you’re aware of
this Van, but the death toll since you have taken control of this squad, is
unacceptable. The mayor, an entire SWAT team…”
“Which is not your fault, we know.”
“Last week, the NYPD bomb squad lost
their captain due to natural causes.”
“We were just thinking that maybe…”
“You would accept the transfer.”
The camera holds on Van, who looks
like he’s been hit with a ton of bricks.
The scene changes to an apartment,
where the camera closes in on two people lying together in bed. We see almost
immediately that they are Malcom and Harper.
HARPER
Malcom.
MALCOM
What is it?
HARPER
Malcom.
MALCOM
Harper. What’s
wrong?
Harper looks at Malcom.
HARPER
Come with me.
MALCOM
Harper?
Harper gets up and walks out of the room. Malcom follows.
MALCOM
Harper?
He follows Harper into the bathroom.
A large white light consumes the room.
The scene cuts to Malcom in the
hospital room. Malcom suddenly wakes up.
MALCOM

Recovery
The scene changes to an apartment
building, with
“Mr. Cooper?” the man asks.
Yeah, that’s me.
“I’m sorry.” The man says, handing
What is it?
“Your father.”
My father?
The scene changes back to the
hospital, Malcom is lying in bed. The other bed in the room is unoccupied.
Carter, Harper, and Renee enter the room.
HARPER
Malcom. You’re
awake.
MALCOM
Harper.
CARTER
You feeling OK?
MALCOM
Yeah. I guess.
How long have I been out?
CARTER
Almost three days.
HARPER
(pointing to the bed next to Malcom)
I used to be there, if it’s any
consolation.
RENEE
Probably not. (nervously)
They discharged her after 24 hours.
HARPER
No concussion. Again.
MALCOM
Where’s
CARTER
I don’t know.
The scene changes to
Hi mom.
His mom replies on the other end.
“Oh, Hi dear. How are you?”
Mom. It’s about
Dad.
“Peter? What happened to him?”
He had a heart attack last night. He’s dead.
“Oh
I know… how you feel… I just thought…
“
I know… I meant.
“I know what he meant to you.”
I just… (starting to cry) I just don’t know what to
do.
The scene changes to Malcom,
sleeping, with Harper sitting next to him, holding his hand. The camera moves out of the room,
and to Carter and Renee who are leaving.
RENEE
You think he’ll be OK?
CARTER
The bullet just tore through his body without hitting any major artery. No
organs were punctured. He just lost a lot of blood, that’s all.
RENEE
So he’ll be fine?
CARTER
I think so.
RENEE
What about us… the team?
CARTER
I don’t know. I know the pressure is on Van, but I think they’re just looking
to point a finger for losing that SWAT team.
RENEE
That wasn’t our fault.
CARTER
It doesn’t matter.
The scene changes to Van, walking
around his office, looking at stuff in his room. A box is on his desk, already
filled with his stuff. He takes a picture of him with the team, off of the wall
and puts it in the box. Van picks up the box and walks out of the room.
The scene changes back to the hospital,
with Harper and Malcom still in the room. It is nighttime outside. Malcom wakes
up.
MALCOM
You’re still here.
HARPER
I can’t sleep.
MALCOM
Is it because of me?
HARPER
No (pause) Not really.
MALCOM
Isn’t it past visiting hours?
HARPER
I told the nurse that I was the officer assigned to protect you from any future
harm. (laughing) I’m your guard.
MALCOM
You lied?
HARPER
Yeah.
MALCOM
How’s everyone else. I didn’t see
HARPER
I haven’t seen
MALCOM
I didn’t mean for this to happen.
HARPER
It’s not your fault.
MALCOM
Did we get the kid?
HARPER
Yeah, we got him.
Malcom looks at Harper, and she
leans in and kisses him.
The scene changes to the next day at
an airport. Van is in line for a ticket.
“I’m sorry sir,
the next direct flight to
VAN
Tomorrow. How about Tomorrow.
“OK… Tomorrow I can get you on the
VAN
That’s better.
The camera pulls away from Van and
zooms through the room to a man carrying a briefcase through the airport. The
man looks very nervous. The camera pulls into the briefcase to reveal a bomb.
The man approaches the metal detectors. The camera pulls away from the man and
through the metal detectors to one of the gates at the airport.
Thanks for coming.
His mother kisses him on the cheek.
The camera switches to Carter
driving through traffic, with Renee sitting in the passengers
seat, working on her computer.
CARTER
Did you watch the game last night?
RENEE
Would you think I was cool if I said yes?
CARTER
You know, you can just say No, it’s fine with me.
RENEE
How’s Kevin?
CARTER
He’s fine.
RENEE
And your wife?
CARTER
We’re all fine. Thanks.
RENEE
I just didn’t want to talk about
basketball again.
Carter and Renee laugh as they
approach a traffic jam, and slow to a stop.
The scene changes back to LAX, with
the man with the bomb from before. He approaches the metal detector.
“Hey Sherry.” The man says. He pulls out his pass
card and by-passes the detector by entering a room within the airport. He scans
his pass card and moves into a baggage area. Two Hispanic workers are moving
packages through the X-Ray/Metal Detector, and onto a conveyor belt.
“It’s already tagged.” The man says,
bypassing the X-Ray/Metal Detector, and throwing the briefcase onto the
conveyor belt. The two Hispanic men exchange a glance, and go back to scanning
packages. The man leaves the room, and the camera follows the package down the
conveyor belt. Two men stand at the end, loading packages onto carts. A lot of
the suitcases, packages, etc. are hitting the ground before the men can get to
them. The briefcase reaches the end and falls to the ground, snapping open. The
two men look down at the briefcase, and immediately notice a bomb.
“We need someone down here in cargo.
We’ve got a Code 57.”
Sir. Did he say
57?
“I think so.”
(very quietly) A code 57 is a bomb. Take me to the cargo room.
Wait for me. Outside.
“
Mom. Please.
The scene changes to the parking lot
with Van getting in his car and pulling away from the airport.
The scene cuts to Carter and Renee
stuck in traffic. Renee’s phone rings.
RENEE
Yeah.
Renee. You got your PC with you?
RENEE
Yeah.
I’ve got something here, I need to take care of.
Renee looks over to Carter, who
heard what
RENEE
Where are you?
LAX.
RENEE
We’re on our way.
Renee. I’m looking at this thing right now…
The scene changes to
And unless you’re in the parking lot, you’re not gonna make it.
RENEE (on phone)
Alright. What does it look like?
It’s a C4 illusionist.
RENEE (on phone)
Timer?
Centered. 57 seconds Renee.
RENEE (on phone)
Alright. I’m looking…
52 seconds.
RENEE (on phone)
On the right, are there Red wires
running to a tube looking thing of C4, and on the right, there are blue, black,
and white wires?
Yeah.
RENEE (on phone)
This is tricky… but I need you to cut the red wire, and the blue wire, and
splice them together, with the Red wire running from the C4, connecting to the
blue wire running from the timer.
RENEE (on phone)
How much time?
24 seconds.
RENEE (on phone)
You gonna make it?
RENEE (on phone)
Done.
RENEE (on phone)
The timer will run out, and nothing will happen.
You’re ruining the suspense.
RENEE (on phone)
Was I right?
You were right.
The scene changes to outside LAX
with a bunch of police swarming the scene, and
Hey guys.
Renee and Carter reach
CARTER
Good job
Mom. I’d like to
introduce you to my friends, the people I work with. This is Carter Winslow,
and Renee Taggert.
Renee shakes her hand, followed by
Carter.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both.
And please, call me Jean.”
CARTER
We haven’t heard from you, since the school.
My father died.
RENEE
Oh,
CARTER
Did you talk to Van?
Why would I talk to Van?
CARTER
About getting leave?
You didn’t hear?
RENEE
About what?
They transferred Van to
The camera holds on Carter and Renee
who look like they’ve been hit with a ton of bricks.
The scene changes to a bank, with Van standing at a window.
VAN
I just need to withdraw my funds.
“Sure… just give me a second.”
Van stands there for a moment,
looking around the room. He turns around and looks at the door, as three men
wearing ski masks enter the bank. They immediately shoot the guard at the door.
“NOBODY MOVE.”
The guard falls down dead, and two
of the men move to close the blinds to the bank.
“EVERYBODY DOWN!”
Van puts his hands behind his head
and lays down on the ground. The camera pulls in on
Van’s face for a minute before the screen fades to black.
