The episode opens on Carter, Chad, Renee, Harper, and Malcom standing outside the bombed house from last episode, talking with the police. Renee has her laptop on hand.

“Thank god for rich neighborhoods.” One of the officers says, approaching the sparks and the other officers.

CARTER

Hows that?

“One of the neighboring houses has security cameras. We’ve got a guy checking footage to see if there are any shots that we can use to nail this guy.”

MALCOM
You think that maybe, he did it?

CARTER
What do you mean?

MALCOM
Well, that the guy blew up his own house?

HARPER
To kill his own wife? Why blow up the house? Why not find another way?

CARTER
Honestly Malcom, that’s not our job to investigate. The detectives will handle it. They just want our opinion on the bomb stuff. That’s all.

Malcom turns to the detecives.

MALCOM
Then what are you guys waiting for. Go investigate! Christ.

Some of the detectives walk away, others just laugh at Malcom.

Another officer runs up.

“I think I might have a print off of the bomb. And you’re NOT gonna believe this.”

Episode 9

Secrets and Lies

The scene changes to Chad’s apartment with Vic and Jean. Vic grabs his coat to head out.

JEAN
You’re leaving?

VIC

I have to.

JEAN
Should I wait up?

VIC
If you want.

Vic starts to leave, but Jean puts a hand on his shoulder. He turns around and she kisses him.

JEAN
I hope your new job works out.

The scene changes to a dark alleyway, with Vic approaching the burly man from before.

VIC
You never said anything about murder.

“Relax… she was already dead.”

VIC
What?

“You should just take the money, and go on vacation. Take that new broad of yours to the Cayman’s or something. Get out of here.”

VIC
I’m not running from this. It was a mistake.

“You’re not turning yourself in.”

VIC
No. I’m turning all of us in. I was stupid to think this was an easy out. That it would FIX everything.

“Listen. If you know what’s good for you, you WON’T go to the police. I like you Vic, I do. But I won’t hesitate to FIX this situation myself.”

Vic looks at the man.

The scene changes back to the house with the Sparks gathered around another officers computer.

“When I pulled a piece of metal out of what looked to be the impact area, I thought it might be a piece of the bomb. I still think it is but…”

CARTER
But what?

“Well… you’re not gonna like this. Look who made this bomb.”

The whole team gasps when Vic’s file is pulled up on the computer.

HARPER
Vic?

MALCOM
Are you sure?

RENEE
Can’t you run another test?

“Believe me, I’m gonna try. I don’t like this either.”

CARTER
Do me a favor, and keep this quiet, OK?

A couple other officers walk over.

“Hey, who are the prints?”

MALCOM
Oh it was just a joke.

CHAD
Yeah, apparently he found the prints of Jimmy Stewart.

The other officers laugh and walk away.

CARTER
We’ve got to find Vic. Chad and Harper, come with me. You two (pointing to Renee) stay here, and try to figure out if there’s any way possible that it’s not Vic.

The scene changes to Vic walking down a street. He pulls his cell phone out of his jacket and dials a number.

The scene cuts to Carter, Chad, and Harper in a car. Chad’s cell phone rings.

CHAD
Hello?

The scene cuts back to Vic walking down the street.

VIC
It’s me. I think I need help.

CHAD (on phone)

Did you do it?

VIC
Yes.

CHAD (on phone)
Where are you?

Vic grows silent.

CHAD (on phone)
Vic, we’ll come and get you. Where are you?

VIC
I’m sorry. I can’t do this.

Vic hangs up the phone, only to have it ring again.

“Big mistake” the burly man’s voice says. “Looks like you won’t be looking forward to that trip to Hawaii anytime soon.”

The phone clicks dead.

The scene changes back to the car.

CHAD
He hung up.

CARTER
Did he say he did it?

CHAD
Yeah.

HARPER
Damn.

CHAD
Drop me off.

CARTER
What?

CHAD
Drop me off. I have to get to my place. I have to get to my mom.

CARTER
You think he’s there?

CHAD
No. But I have to make sure she’s OK. That she’s safe.

Carter pulls over.

CARTER
Where is he?

CHAD
I don’t know. Check the bars.

HARPER
Isn’t he in AA?

CHAD
Not anymore.

The scene changes to Vic running down the street, and into an apartment building. He runs up the stairs and stops when he sees the apartment door ajar.

VIC
No.

Vic opens it slowly.

VIC
Jean?

He enters the room and looks into the kitchen. Jean’s dead body is lying on the kitchen floor with a bullet in the head. Blood is splattered on the wall behind her. Vic rushes to her body and grabs her hand.

VIC
Jean! Oh my god. No. No. I’m so sorry.

Vic starts to cry as he holds Jean’s hand.

The scene holds for a minute as the camera pulls away from Vic and Jean.

The scene changes back to the house, with Renee and Malcom with the officer running the prints.

“I’ve done it twice, and it’s his. I’m sure of it.”

MALCOM
So what do we do now?

RENEE
Hope that Carter finds him first.

“I’ve got to turn this in now. I’m sorry.”

MALCOM
I understand.

The scene changes back to the apartment. Vic is slowly getting up from the floor, when he hears footsteps coming from someone running up the stairs in the hallway. Vic turns and looks for an out. He moves for the window and opens it. He starts climbing out onto the fire escape. Chad runs into the room, and first sees Vic.

CHAD
Vic! Wait!

VIC
It wasn’t me. It’s not me… I didn’t kill her.

CHAD
You made the bomb! Of course you did.

VIC
Not that… her.

CHAD
Who?

Chad turns to look in the kitchen and sees his mother lying there dead. He immediately drops to his knees. He looks visibly sick now. He throws up onto the floor and starts crying. He turns around to look at Vic, and Vic’s already out the window.

CHAD
VIC! GET BACK HERE!

Chad cries out as he stands up.

CHAD
VIC!

Chad slowly regains his balance and footing as he moves toward the window. He looks out to see Vic climbing down the fire escape. Chad gets out on the fire escape and starts following Vic down each level.

CHAD
VIC STOP!

VIC
I didn’t kill her!

CHAD
YES YOU DID!

VIC
I didn’t mean for this to happen.

Vic reaches the bottom and takes off running. Chad almost reaches the bottom, but decides to just jump down instead of finishing the descent. He loses his balance when he hits the ground, and falls. As he moves to stand up, he takes his gun out from behind his shirt. He watches as Vic is almost out of shot range, and points his gun at Vic and fires a shot.

CHAD
STOP!

He misses, but it stops Vic.

VIC
I loved her. Please. Don’t do this.

Chad wipes the tears away from his face. He holds the gun with both hands.

VIC
What are you going to do now?

The camera cuts to Chad pointing the gun at Vic. Behind him, Carter and Harper run into the alleyway and stop. Everyone stands motionless, waiting for Chad’s next move.

The screen fades to black.
