The Top Three Skin Care Mistakes

Here's what John Duffy, Technical Director of Treatment Skin Care at Avon Laboratories points to as the most common missteps women make with their skin care.

1. An unchanging routine all year-round
People tend to self-type their skin and think of themselves as having that skin type year- round, says Duffy, adding that while your skin itself doesn't change, what it needs does change with the seasons (as well as life-changes like pregnancy and age). You need a heavier moisturizer in winter than in summer, for example, or a lighter one if you travel from a cold climate to a warm, humid one. Duffy advises that it's important to periodically reassess what your skin needs at that moment in time.

2. Not using sun protection on a daily basis
There's no reason today for anyone not to be protected from both UVA and UVB rays as a matter of routine, says Duffy. Just use Avon's Age Block Environmental Protection Cream. It contains Parsol(r) 1789, the most powerful defense to date, to protect against UVA rays, plus SPF 15 protection against UVB rays.

3. Overaggressive cleansing
Cleansing too often or using products that are chemically too aggressive for their skin type is a prevalent goof, says Duffy. How can you tell if you're making it? Understanding Today's Sunscreen

It doesn't matter whether you use sunscreen as protection against skin damage or to prevent photoaging, as long as you do use it, daily. (It does both jobs, by the way.) Assuming you've grasped the math-low SPF, minimal protection; higher SPF, more protection-here are the other important factors to consider as you choose your defense:

Expect more than simple protection
We're well into more than a decade of sun awareness and, by now, the best sunscreens do more than screen the sun. Look, for example, for antioxidants, like the vitamins C and E found in Avon Sun Age-Fighting Protective Sun Gel SPF 6; they give added protection by neutralizing skin-damaging free radicals. Get the best in the science of protection. Traditional sunscreens are very effective in protecting skin from UVB (ultraviolet B) rays. Sunscreen fortified with Parsol(r) 1789, however, does more.
