First baseman Mark McGwire cleared three ducks from a very crowded pond with a
grand slam at Shibe Park where the Limerick Hurlers beat the Kelso Hilanders
19 to 12.

McGwire helped send the fans home happy.  He lined a single in the 6th inning
and launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 2nd
of the season) in the 7th inning.  Limerick bats were hot in the 4th inning
when they had 5 runs on 5 hits, the 7th inning scoring 4 runs and the 8th
inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 3 hits.  Kelso was not lacking for run
support as they scored in 7 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they
seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames.

The win was credited to Stan Coveleski(1-0) who went 3 innings allowing 1 run.
Mitch Williams(0-1) suffered the loss in relief.  He couldn't find the strike
zone and allowed 6 walks in 2 innings.
