Top 6th: Johnny Bench blocked the plate, saving a run! First baseman Edgar Martinez had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Al Spalding went the distance as the Cleveland Mayors man-handled the Brentwood Bearcats - the final score was 13 to 3. Martinez was unconscious all evening. The Brentwood fans hated to see him approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He doubled bringing in a run in the 3rd inning, doubled in the 6th inning, delivered a base-hit knocking in a run in the 7th inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 9th inning. Cleveland managed 16 in their victory. The winning pitcher was Spalding(2-2) who allowed 3 runs for the game. The loss was charged to Bob Lemon(1-2). He was knocked around by Cleveland, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Martinez said. 'Whenever I would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.' |
