Sacramento came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Cepeda led off and started the attack as he lined a base-hit. Roy Campanella stepped up next and he doubled which scored a run. Ron Santo followed, but he was set down on strikes. Ryne Sandberg stepped in and he slapped a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Limerick had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. The winning pitcher was Jim Palmer(2-6) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Palmer got help from Dave Smith who was credited with his 1st save. Dick Hall(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 1 inning. 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Jimmy Dugan said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.' |
