Carl Mays delivered 9 solid innings and Harry Heilmann had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at League Park where the Athens Bobkittens beat the hapless Cleveland Mayors 9 to 2. Athens wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 3 runs using 2 hits. Honus Wagner opened up the inning nicely when he reached on an error. After an out was recorded, Lou Gehrig stepped in and he drew a walk. Mike Schmidt then drew a walk to load the bases. Chuck Klein struck out, unable to help the rally. Dick Allen stepped into the box and laced a base-knock scoring two baserunners. Allen took second on the throw. Babe Phelps kept the rally going and delivered a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Mays(8-9) needed. Athens totaled 15 on the night. Herb Pennock(4-7) was given the loss. He was touched for 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. 'Mays pitched a gem of a game', Cleveland's manager recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.' |
