Athens erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. Harris led off and he laced a one-base hit. Allen was safe on a stolen base. Lou Gehrig then reached on an error resulting in a run. Two outs later Mike Schmidt stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Athens continued their aggressive style with another stolen base. Max Bishop kept the rally going and delivered a base-hit with two more runners crossing home. Harvey went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th. Harry Coveleski(3-2) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Dick Radatz(4-4) was the loser in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game. After the game, it took a long while before Harvey's manager emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Athens locker room.' |
