Teen smoking
is on the rise at a 19 year high. 4.5 million American children aged 12-17 are
current smokers and more than 3000 additional children become regular smokers each
day. The Michael Brandon Young Childhood Cancer Foundation's Smart Teens Don't Smoke
program is working hard to become an advocate in the youths against tobacco
campaign. The foundation currently works alongside the Campaign for Tobacco Free
Kids, a national recognized program based in Washington DC, targeted at educating our
youth about the hazards of Nicotine

National Cancer
Survivors Day
Day
First Sunday June 1999
|
National Cancer Survivors Day
to be celebrated across the country. While
the official day is the first Sunday of June, hospitals and communities can celebrate
Survivors Day however they choose. The purpose of Survivors Day is to recognize the
strength and courage of people who have been diagnosed with cancer, to remember those whom
we've lost to the disease, and to raise awareness of issues of concern to people with
cancer and their families.
What are we doing in honor of
this very special and critical day ?
This year the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center in Durham NC will
publish a special edition in the center's newspaper. The Survivors Day Gazette. This
particular publication will feature educational and inspirational stories of interest to
cancer survivors and their families. It will be sent to everyone (adults and children) who
has been treated for cancer at Duke and will be distributed through the oncology
clinics/units. A committee composed of representatives from throughout the Cancer Center
is working on the project.
The Michael Brandon Young Childhood
Cancer Foundation will join Duke by publishing an article about our founder, Brandon Young
in the Survivors Day Gazette. |

National
Kick-butts Day
April 14, 1999 |
MBYCCF sponsors National Kick-butts day, April 14,1999 at local North Georgia
Middle School. This day is designated to educate
young people about the dangers of tobacco and to limit kids' access to tobacco
products. These young advocates will participate in a variety of activities
that contains plenty of ideas of how not to pick up the habit. Students will
encourage local television stations, radio stations, and newspapers to cover the event. We
hope to make an impact and influence business and government leaders that kids are part of
the solution to stopping the deadly epidemic of youth tobacco use.
If you would like your school to participate in Kick Butts Day
'99 see their web site at www.kickbuttsday.org
