General Notes on Application Projects

Save File When You Begin a Project

Prefix the file names of lab projects with the starting page number and project number for the project. Look at the project directions near the end of the assignment to find the file name recommended by the lab manual. Use "File | Save As" at the beginning of your work, and save your project about every 5 minutes while working. This minimizes the amount of lost work when accidents happen.

LAB DISK

Not all the files on my disk were readable.

You can download a copy of the files from the Shelly Cashman publisher site.  Go to http://www.course.com/studentcenter/downloads.cfm and enter the ISBN "0-7895-5797-5" into the search edit box.  You should end up locating file 1332-3d.exe which is a self-extracting zip file.  It is 407 kB in size.  Save it to a directory of its own.  When you double-click on this file, it will extract files that will get stored into that directory.  When the download is finished, unzip the file.  The unzip program creates directory 1332-3 in the root directory of your disk.  You may want to drag this directory into the folder you want those files.

Word Processor

WD1 Paradise Island [30 minutes]

WD 1.26 - WD 1.27, "To Save a New Document".  Save to your H: drive at points the lab manual tells you to save to the A: drive.
WD 1.33, "To Change the Font of Selected Text". Algerian Font is not installed on the system at Methodist College.  Choose another font that will display in 48 point on one line.  The point of this part is to learn how to change fonts.
WD 1.34, "To Format a Line of Text".  These steps do not have a red bullet, but you need to do them anyway.
WD 1.41 Step 3. Ignore the directory displayed in the "Look in:" selection box.
WD 1.44.  At Methodist College, save the picture to your H: drive.  At home, create a directory CSC100Lab for your lab work, and save the picture to that directory.  The lab manual instructions are best matched to Internet Explorer.  You can achieve similar results with other browsers, perhaps with additional steps.
WD 1.47, just before "Printing a Document".  Insert your name and date into a header.

WD 1.50. If you do not have "Open Office Document" on your Start Menu, you can open Word, and use File | Open, hunt for your document on your H: drive, and open it.

HELP: Explore each of the HELP options on your particular installation of MS Word.  It may be very different than the description given in the lab manual for Word 97.  This feature has changes.
WD 1.55, Step 2. If you are using Word 2000, "Save a Word document as a Web page or a Frames page".
WD 1.57. Word 2000 uses only the Office Assistant.

WD2 Resume Wizard

WD 2.20. AutoFormat As You Type. Check to make sure "AutoFormat As You Type" is enabled.  See the second half of the paragraph for directions.  Tools | AutoCorrect | AutoFormat As You Type |

WD3 Research Paper

WD 3.13 Step 3. Type your own name rather than "Porter".

WD 3,16 Step 1. Type your own name rather than "Anna L. Porter".

WD 3.18, "To Save A Document".  Save the document to your H: drive if working in lab.

WD 3.20, Step 4. Wait until after you finish typing a paragraph to do corrections. Stopping at each mistake slows your progress. Spelling errors will be underlined in red to make them easy to find.

WD 3.25, Step 1. To get the footnote pane referenced on page 3.26, change from "Print layout" to "Normal" view on the "View" menu. Both views are OK for entering data, but the panels for data entry appear differently.

WD 3.34. If "Table AutoFormat" does not appear when you right-click on the table, highlight the table and then right-click.

WD 3.40, Top. "To Center the Title of the Works Cited Page". Be sure to do these steps even though they are not marked with a red bullet!

WD 3.42, step 1, Figure 3-62.

WD 3.43. Save your file BEFORE doing Step 1. Paragraph sorting is a topic many people make a mistake on. If you save before you sort, and it does not come out right, you can either click the "Undo" button, or you can close without saving and reopen the saved version.

WD 3.48, Step 1. Click the word "find".

WD 3.49, Step 2. If "detect" does not appear in the "Meanings" list, choose another verb.

WD 3.50, Step 2. Your word count should be within 2 words of the count shown in the text. If you selected a one-word substitution on WD 3.49, Step 3, your count should match the lab manual count exactly. If your number of spaces is different, you might have used 2 spaces between sentences rather than just 1. Professional typists are traditionally taught to use 2 spaces. This lab manual uses just 1 because Microsoft claims that it adjusts the horizontal distance for a space following a period.

WD 3.51. Navigating to a Hyperlink. You must be signed onto the Internet for this section to work.

WD 3.51, Step 4. It is possible that no Web toolbar will appear, in which case, you do not need to click the Web Toolbar button.

WD 3.52. Always save before you quit, unless there is a specific reason to not save.
