BACKGROUND
Well, what's to say about one of the longest-running villains in the Spider-Verse? Doctor Octopus first hit the pages in Amazing #3, and hasn't been far out of the picture until his recent demise. Even then, his tentacles have been quickly filled I hear. His powers and Spider-Man's were well-matched, and their battles were typically spectacular.
Doc Ock built his tentacles to assist him with his Nuclear Research. They were originally controled by dials on the front of the chest-plate. An accident fused them to his body, and gave him mental control over them. Otherwise he has only human strength, and Spider-Man has often knocked him out with a single punch. The problem of course lies in getting close enough to land a punch.
He typically dressed in green and orange and wore thick-rimmed spectacles. The spectacles are treated in a solution which stops Spider-Man's webbing from sticking to them. The Doctor was typically driven by the "Conquer the World" syndrome, alternating with the "Revenge for my Last Humiliation" syndrome. It has been hinted that the nuclear accident which gave him his powers also loosened his grip on sanity. I wouldn't want to comment on that.
