Dear Friends,
I represent the Mercer County Association for Children
with Learning Disabilities. October is learning disabilities month. Our symbol
is the ghost, because the handicapping condition of the children that we serve is
invisible: the children appear normal in every respect, except for some reason
or reasons they are unable to learn in the ordinary manner that their peers
learn. The prognosis for their future can be bright, if they are taught HOW to
learn in the methods that are most effective for each of the children.
We are a non-profit organization of professionals and
parents who are striving to full fill the potential of each of the children
whom we serve. Since 1972 we have existed in Mercer County, providing 1:1 tutoring,
computer augmentation. Most of the work done is volunteerism, except for the
teachers (all qualified, certified, specialists) who work at a rock-bottom fee.
Our executive board members are non-paid volunteers who guide our programs.
Administrative costs are supplemented through the generosity of the United Way
of Mercer County through the Buhl Club budget.
We charge
$15.00 for one hour of tutoring with the child's personal teacher...but when we
have a child who cannot pay, we still teach that child for little or no cost to
the parents (40 to 60 of the children whom we serve are assisted). Because the
teacher must still be paid, we depend on civic and church organizations to help
with our SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Every penny of the donations made go directly to the
child in need. There is no other organization that can make the claim that 100%
of donation monies are used for the benefit of the population which they
serve.
We are fortunate that the FH Buhl Club allows us to use
their facilities free of charge. This allows us to insure that all monies
received serve children.
We have existed all these years through the Grace of God, for each time monies run low, some generous Precious Friend sends us a gift.
Please keep us in your heart as you distribute your
charity funds this year.
Yours in education,
Ann Milliard,
Executive Director
