SUPERHERO MARIAH Last month, we told you to look out for Hollywood superstars who are pumping themselves up to try out for prime superhero roles. Well, are you ready for Mariah Carey as a big-screen Wonder Woman? There have been Tinseltown rumors of Carey being cast as the comic superchick, now that action specialist Joel Silver may do the project as a Warner Bros. megaproduction. The possibilty of Carey donning tights and superheroine drag has already sparked controversy. After all, the wiggly warbler has turned up on-screen in only the teeny role as an opera diva in the dud comedy The Bachelor. And who knows how she's going to be received in the semiautobiographical musical All That Glitters? The WW role isn't a lock for Carey, though. Other actresses reportedly up for the part (played on TV by Cathy Lee Crosby and Lynda Carter in the '70's) include Sandra Bullock, Angie Harmon, and, most promisingly, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Mariah Carey has agreed to marry boyfriend Luis Miguel after he secretly popped the question and slipped a sparkiling diamond ring on her finger. The lovebirds were on a Bahamian vacation aboard one of Luis' yatchs when they became engaged. "Mariah is absolutely ecstatic," says a friend of the 29-year-old singer. "She's totally in love with Luis". "She's been working really hard recently, so he decided to treat her and whisked her away for a holiday. She said it was like being in paradise, total bliss." Mariah met the millionaire Latin singer sensation in Aspen, Colo., just months after her marriage to music moguel Tommy Mottola ended in divorce in 1998 - and it was love at first site. "Luis has sent Mariah roses every day since they ,et and he's always lavishing jewels on her," says the friend. "WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS" RELEASED AS SINGLE "Where Are You Christmas" is the new track from Faith Hill, which she cut for this season's blockbuster "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". The track was written by Mariah Carey and James Horner, and has just been released as a promotional single. Although there were plans for the song to be commercially released, no release date has been scheduled. Because of it's seasonal-based them, the track is sure not to be released later than December. While December approaches and no release date is set, it appears as though this wonderful track is left as a radio-only single. Because of it's inspirational lyrics and powerful vocals, "Where Are You Christmas" could be nominated for an Acadamy Award for the "Best Song From A Movie" Catogory. While the track has failed to enter Billboard's Top 50 on the Hot 100 Singles Chart, Faith's song "The Way You Love Me" is currently at Number 8. With Christmas coming within a matter or weeks, the track is expected to gain popularity and move up on the charts. The track is playing on radio Nation Wide. The music video is now airing on VH1 and MTV. NOVEMBER 30, 2000 MARIAH'S EX FLAUNTS CATHOLIC LAW FOR WEEKEND WEDDING Back in 1993, singer Mariah Carey had a vision of love. She married Sony Music CEO Tommy Mottola in a lavish ceremony at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Manhattan. There were 300 guests. It was quite a scene. Mariah was 23, Mottola was 43, according to reports. This Saturday, Mottola will tie the knot again, this time with Mexican soap star Thalia. But here's the problem: the wedding is scheduled for St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Bishop Edward Egan will officiate. That's a Catholic church. And Carey has never been asked about an annulment by Mottola of their three year marriage. Cindi Berger, Mariah's rep, spoke to the singer yesterday and she claims not to have heard from her ex-husband on this subject. And she hasn't signed anything like an annulment. We'll take her word for it. Joe Zwilling, a spokesperson for St. Patrick's Cathedral explained to me: "We view marriage as a sacrament," and then went on to say that even if a person has been married in a non-Catholic church, "there must be a declaration of nullity." Even if you were, say, Jewish, and wanted to marry in the Catholic church after divorce, you'd still have to provide evidence of a "get" (the Jewish word for annulment). It's cut-and-dried, black-and-white. Mottola, who was raised as a Catholic, is said to have converted to Judaism for his marriage to wife Lisa, which ended in divorce in 1990. But before it was over and done, Lisa accused Mottola of concealing assets from her and her children, who were then 8 and 10 years old (and are now 18 and 20, respectively). Zwilling declined to comment on the Mottola nuptials, which appear to be in strict violation of Catholic law. When I asked if Mottola had donated money to St. Patrick's Cathedral lately, the official responded: "I'm not going to talk about that, I can't answer that." But the New York Daily News reported back on September 5th that Mottola had been seen with Egan at the Cathedral. Is it possible the new Bishop has no idea that he's marrying someone improperly? Mottola's office said the Sony honcho was busy with wedding plans and would not respond to questions. Rally musicians like Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Prine and Bruce Cockburn to the cause, however, and some ears will start to perk up. That's the theory behind the ``Concerts for a Landmine Free World'' tour that begins Saturday in Stamford, Conn. The brief, five-city tour is a Northeast version of a similar series of benefit concerts that took place in California last year. Each of the six musicians is participating in an unrehearsed, acoustic show that participants hope will be like a song swapping session that would happen if they gathered on someone's back porch. Bobby Muller, co-founder of the Campaign to Ban Landmines, learned the power of celebrity when his group accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway in 1997. The awards ceremony was overshadowed by a concert that featured Mariah Carey, Jewel and Boyz II Men, he said. Even a relatively small gesture - Sheryl Crow wearing a Campaign to Ban Landmines T-shirt when she sang the national anthem before a World Series game - pays dividends for his group, he said. ``Getting the energy of these personalities lets you reach an awful lot of people that you're not going to get with a speech or a routine kind of event,'' Muller said. Harris has been the most active celebrity supporting the campaign. Carpenter said she's on the tour because of Harris' invitation, although she had already been moved to support the group. Four years ago, Carpenter was among a small group invited on a Christmas trip to Bosnia. Viewing the pockmarked countryside was a shock, and so was the order by authorities to stay on paved surfaces because of the danger of mines. ``It was unlike any experience I've ever had and it made a deep impression on me,'' Carpenter said. ``It resonated so much that when Emmylou asked me to get involved, it was a no-brainer.'' Proceeds will be used to support the group's political campaign and its rehabilitation clinics for people injured by mines, Muller said. The organization runs four in Cambodia and two in Vietnam. Muller's group estimates there are between 60 million and 80 million active land mines in the world. The mines aren't going away, but the campaign is finding it harder to attract attention than it did at the time of the Nobel Prize, said Loung Ung, a Cambodian refugee who works for the campaign. ``Our success has become a bit of a hindrance to us,'' she said. ``People don't realize that the war goes on as long as people step on mines.'' In addition to the Stamford show, the artists are performing in Ottawa, Canada, on Dec. 3; Toronto, Canada, on Dec. 4; Burlington, Vt., on Dec. 5 and 6; and Boston on Dec. 7. Griffith doesn't consider the campaign a political issue - not after traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia on a campaign-sponsored trip and holding children in her lap who needed artificial limbs after stepping on land mines in their back yard. She said she's likely to perform a new song, ``Traveling Through a Part of You,'' written during her trip for her ex-husband, a Vietnam veteran. Although the campaign to ban land mines is a serious topic, Griffith and Carpenter said music fans coming to the benefits shouldn't expect polemics. ``I think they're going to have a lot of fun,'' Griffith said. ``It's a hootenanny. It's like a vacation for us, really, because we all get to be on stage with each other and join in on songs that we rarely get to hear live.'' Readers wanted to know how Mottola could be married in a Catholic church after having been divorced - twice. The issue at hand revolves around the Catholic rule that a person who has been married cannot get married again in a Catholic ceremony unless there is an annulment of the previous marriage. Mottola, who was born Catholic and later converted to Judaism to marry his first wife, Lisa, married Mariah Carey in 1993 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan. They divorced in 1998. A spokesman for St. Patrick's Cathedral said he would not comment on any individual case. But for Mottola to marry in St. Patrick's, he must provide documentation that he is free to marry - and that documentation is generally an annulment. "They would have to demonstrate that they were free to marry in a Catholic church," said the spokesman. "That would be either by an annulment or a declaration that their previous marriage was not valid." And while he did not know whether Mottola had proven his annulment, the spokesman added, "I would have to presume that he has had one." But according to Foxnews.com's Roger Friedman, Carey has never signed an annulment agreement with Mottola, and Carey's spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, confirmed that yesterday. A DIVA IS BORN This summer, Mariah Carey filmed her first movie All that Glitters. Producer Lawrence Mark recalls it proved almost as treacherous a shoot as his high-adventure thriller Vertical Limit. "There's no denying she's a diva and she loves being the diva which is part of her charm," says Mark. "She makes no bones about it, but, to her credit, Mariah knows she's not a diva in the film world. "She realizes if she shows up eight hours late for a music video, they'll just have to wait. "Since video producers have waited in the past, she seems to think they'll wait again, and again and again." Mark breathes a sigh of relief when he recalls that on All That Glitters "she knew she had to prove herself and it was kind of fun to watch her trying to adjust her behaviour."She was a good little trooper, but I'm not sure I want to produce her next movie, mind you!" Mark admits All That Glitters didn't exactly tax Carey's budding acting talents. "You're not going to see a new Meryl Streep, but that wasn't the intent of the film. "She's playing someone close to home and the film is set in the music industry so she knows the world her character is from. "Best of all, she sings 12 songs. The boys and Carey duet on Phil Collins' 1984 hit single Against All Odds. The lads are more than thrilled to sing with Carey. "Working with Mariah is a dream come true for us. We're big fans of her and her music. We never thought we would be able to work with her 'cos we're fairly new in the music business," Nicky says humbly. Against All Odds was originally planned for Carey's album Rainbow, but after the singer met the boys at the American Music Video post-award party in Los Angeles last year, she approached them about the idea of a duet. "We were surprised when Mariah told us she's a Westlife fan. (Carey's favourite song is Flying Without Wings.) We thought she was just being nice. But when she asked us to do a duet, we jumped at the opportunity," Nicky tells us. So, off to the island of Capri, Italy they went to meet Carey. We heard the boys couldn't get enough of Carey during the making of the Against All Odds video. "Nah, it was only Bryan who was caught on film looking at Mariah's breasts, not the four of us," Nicky giggles. "At the end of the video, you can see Mariah and us in slow motion, but when we reviewed the tape, we were shocked to find Bryan staring at Mariah's breasts!" he says slightly embarrassed. Although Carey didn't mind the gawking, executives at the boys' record label didn't find it amusing. The shot was later re-edited to avoid "further embarrassment". Despite that slight hiccup, Against All Odds proved to be a winning collaboration between Carey and Westlife. For Carey, the single propelled her to the top of the UK charts, and for Westlife, Against All Odds is the band's leg-in into the United States' music market. The song is their sixth No.1 single in the UK and it's set to be a hit in the US as well. Nicky makes no secret of the group's expansion plan: "We need to work with someone like Mariah to strengthen our position in the States. Although our first single, Swear it again, reached gold status there, we thought we needed to aim even higher." Coulter also accused the American superstar of being a show-off as he blasted her version of other people's songs. Her last number one - a duet with Westlife - was a cover of Phil Collins classic 'Against All Odds'. Derry-born Phil revealed: "My fuse is getting shorter and shorter with singers who won't leave a song alone. Mariah Carey is a prime example. What she does to songs is inhuman. JOHNSTON TO BE WONDER WOMAN? The Popcorn U.K. Web site reported a rumor that Kristen Johnston - Sally on NBC's SF sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun" - is set to play the title role in producer Joel Silver's upcoming "Wonder Woman" movie. If true, the 6-foot-tall Johnston would beat out several other prominent women rumored to be in line for the role, including actresses Sandra Bullock and Catherine Zeta Jones and pop star Mariah Carey. Johnston's best-known feature role was Wilma in "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas". She also played Ivana Humpalot in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me". This reporter was lucky enough to have an exclusive audience with Michael Jackson last night. The world’s most successful and controversial performer held court at the cozily elegant Fifth Avenue home of public relations wizard Howard J. Rubenstein. About 30 people were in attendance. The occasion? To launch the Time with Kids Initiative, an outgrowth of Jackson's Heal the World Foundation. Before we get into the details of the new program, let’s talk about Michael the Superstar. He’s finishing up his new record, is ambivalent about touring, will make an album with his brothers in the near future and has been taking his kids to synagogue lately. (More on that last bombshell below.) "My new album should be out in March," he said, crossing his fingers. "I played six songs for Sony Music today and they were walking on air. They applauded. The story was that Jackson would leave Sony Music and reunite with his brothers, the Jacksons. It never happened, of course. Now Michael says, "First I’m producing an album for my nephews, the group 3T, and then I’ll record with my brothers again." So you heard it here first. Jackson also has designs on becoming a movie star. He’s looking forward to filming The Nightmare of Edgar Allen Poe, which should start next spring with William Malone (House on Haunted Hill) directing. Ironically someone at Sony told me yesterday, before I left to meet Jackson, that the company is trying to dissuade him from this acting bug. But if Mariah Carey can give it a try, why not him? MARIAH CAREY'S PLASTIC EXPOSURE Mattel, the giant toy maker behind such popular hits as Barbie and GI Joe, held a press conference Tuesday and revealed that music star Mariah Carey is, in fact, a plastic doll. The expensive doll has recently sustained minor damage when it melted under the stage lights at a concert in Chicago. The owners of the Chicago concert auditorium failed to abide by the strict lighting requirements specified by Mattel for each performance. Mattel hopes that in light of this announcement, similar damage will not occur in the future. Originally envisioned and constructed as a "whiter" Whitney Houston, the Carey doll has taken on a life of its own. The manufacturers made sure that her voice speaker had great range and depth. The success of her debut album created suspicion that she was "constructed". In concert, her mechanical performances increased suspicion that Mariah Carey was, in fact, an automaton. Tony Mottola has been recently revealed to be a major shareholder in Mattel. When rumors began to circulate about the synthetic nature of the star, Mottola moved proactively to marry the doll. Everyone involved felt that doubts about Carey's human existence could threaten their current investment. The marriage quashed rumors of lifelessness. Mottola's smarmy and balding appearance assured music watchers that Ms. Carey achieved stardom on her back. It was only the recent spectacle at her Chicago concert, where her left arm fell to the stage and melted into a high density polyethylene puddle, that compelled Mattel to reveal the truth. Shortly thereafter, her rayon hair caught fire, stunning the crowd. Throughout the disaster, the singer seemed unaware of the surrounding chaos and continued "her" performance. Mattel revealed that the original idea came in 1986 when the exposure of Milli Vanilli revealed the commercial possibilities of a synthetic band. If an act could created without real singers, why bother using expensive flesh-and-blood puppets? Human puppets have well documented disadvantages including, but not limited to, ego problems, drug use, and alcohol abuse. A doll, in positive contrast, could be made to appear to generally have show disdain to those surrounding it and shed this "swelled head disposition" when before the cameras. Mariah Carey's apparent conceit was an effective cover to keep anyone from discovering her true identity. Mattel claims that the Mariah puppet is also very durable and nearly maintenance free. It will never splinter, rot, warp, check, or be eaten by insects. News organizations have been the most defensive for not realizing the petroleum-based nature of the super star. Kurt Loder, of MTV Music News, commented "In this industry it is often difficult to know who is real or and who is artificial. Just because Ms. Carey didn't say anything meaningful in hundreds of hours of interviews doesn't mean that she was not alive. I'm pretty sure Courtney Love is alive...she certainly smells like it." For interviews, Mattel has always required all questions that were to be directed at the polymer Diva to be submitted before the interview. The answers to the questions were then placed in a large voice box. Interview videos recently examined reveal that an assistant just off screen would pull the string in her back to generate the appropriate response. Her fans seem unfazed by this revelation since it does not violate the basic image they have of her. In fact, sales of her most recent record seem to have increased since the announcement. This whole story is mostly untrue. What is true however is that Luis did indeed date Thaliá for a short period of time and there are some pictures on the internet of them kissing. For the rest, however there is no truth. To my knowledge, Luis does not have an official website. Secondly, I am informed the pictures of Luis and Thalia kissing were publicty photos. Also, I personally think Mariah would not freak out over this situation. Fact is, this is just another rumor to add to the mill. CAMEO CLOSEUPS There's something about cameo appearances that make a movie funnier ... or at least more interesting. When singers cross over into the movie genre, it's almost like seeing a relative up on the big screen-"Hey! Isn't that so-and-so?!" In this week's new release Little Nicky, we get an appearance by the Iron Man himself, Ozzy Osbourne, just in time to save the earth from being taken over by evil. The part had to have been written for him and only him. Similarly, when it was time to cast a creepy, S&M, would-be killer in 1999's Jawbreaker, actress Rose McGowan did nothing more than roll over in bed to come up with her fiance, rocker Marilyn Manson. In what had to be a bad casting call, rapper Lil' Kim played the oldest looking high school student in history in 1999's She's All That. In what had to be a realization of the mistake, she didn't have too many lines. In 1999's The Bachelor, Mariah Carey played Ilana, an ex-girlfriend of Chris O'Donnell's character. Maybe she needed money to buy some clothes to cover herself up. But some singers opt to play themselves and juts do what they do best in films-sing. In 1985's Vision Quest, starring Matthew Modine, Madonna (still in the boy-toy and lace phase) performed her hit song "Crazy For You." In Coyote Ugly, this year's should-have-stayed-a-trailer-instead-of-becoming-a-movie movie, LeAnn Rimes made a cameo appearance as herself. Trying to shed her down-home little girl image (Melissa Joan Hart Syndrome), she got up on the bar and did her thing like the rest of the wild coyotes. Sheena Easton played, well ... Sheena Easton in 1993's Indecent Proposal as she sang a lovely ballad in Robert Redford's party scene. The late and extremely great Phyllis Hyman sang the slow jam at a party in an uncredited cameo performance in 1988's School Daze. English singer Des'ree was credited as the "Diva" in 1996's Romeo and Juliet as she sang the love theme for tragic lovebirds Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. The goup Digital Underground had speaking lines and the chance to perform in 1991's Nothing But Trouble. Following Westlife's opinion that the Spice Girls have failed to achieve success in the States the Irish boy band have revealed their plans to crack the America market with Against All Odds.
The duet with Mariah Carey, which gained a sixth No 1 for Westlife in the UK's worldpop-sponsored official Top 40 charts, could well be a winner across the Atlantic but the guys were divided as to when the single will be release. 'It's our choice,' stated Kian Egan but bandmate Shane Filan explained that their second stab to win over the US market will not take place at least until the summer when the guys have spent some time in the recording studio in preparation for their third album. 'We can't go over there to promote it with Mariah just yet,' he said. However Nicky Byrne was more optimistic about Westlife's assault on the States. 'I've a funny feeling we will release it in the future with a new video,' he confirmed laying down the gauntlet for a Spice v Westlife race take over the American charts. On a lighter note Nicky joked that Mariah Carey has been pestering Westlife with regular phone calls. 'She rings us every Friday night but we don't take her calls.' LUIS MIGUEL ABDUCTS MARIAH TO BARBADOS After the rumors that claimed that their relationship was over, Luis Miguel and Mariah Carey continue to enjoy their romance, as was proven by their recent Caribbean vacation. In October, Luis and Mariah were spotted by the media on the island of Barbados, where they rested for a few days following the completion of Mariah Carey¹s first big "Hollywood" role in All That Glitters, also starring Eric Benet, Chris Tessaro and DaBrat. Vondie Curtis-Hall is the director. Mariah Carey had been very busy during the last few months of the production, and that's why Luis Miguel arrived as she was wrapping up her work on the film, so that he could take her with him on vacation. Earlier, the Mexican singer had invited his sweetheart to spend a few days with him at his home in Acapulco during a break in the filming. "They looked very much in love, I don't believe that they've ended their romance", said one of the photographers who caught up with them in Barbados. There's been a lot of talk about this relationship, but what is certain is that they continue to be together and continue to be happy. While Mariah Carey was working in Toronto, Luis Miguel visited her a couple of times, but according to the press, not everything went as he would have wished, since his girlfriend was occupied with her work and spent most of the time on the set. Luis was often frustrated, because he wanted Mariah to be with him, and she, obviously, was very busy with her work on the film, wrote a columnist in the New York Post. For that reason, as soon as Mariah had a few days off, the Mexican singer practically kidnapped her, taking her with him for a few days to his Acapulco home. For Mariah Carey, All That Glitters signifies a great challenge and turning point in her career; her first starring role in the "Mecca of the Cinema". MARIAH BETRAYS MICKY 
Too bad! What no woman had ever done to the Little Sun [Luis Miguel] so far, his girlfriend Mariah is doing it and with no remorses. It seems that Luis is really being betrayed and people who know him say that he is depressed because of this. It has been more than two months since Luismi last went out from his Acapulco house, and he hasn't appeared for the press since her famous girlfriend is dating with two American men.
The first one is the actor Max Beesly, with whom Mariah acts in the movie "All That Glitters", whose filming was made in Canada and New York, and was finished this month. In the movie, which will be premiered in March 2001, Max plays the disk jockey with whom the character played by Carey falls in love. Mariah has been also seen dating with NY Yankees player, Derek Jeter. Did love end? If everything was good between Luis Miguel and Mariah Carey, the singer would have visited her to the studios in which the filming was going on, things like that never happened. Mariah has been the only woman who got to free star Luis Miguel from his loneliness. It was for her that the Little Sun let everybody know about his personal life, for the first time. And he even dedicated the song "O Tu O Ninguna" to her, whose lyrics are: "I have no exit, because behind you there is only midst...". Is it that so much romanticism was in vain for the Latin American spoilt? WORLD-WIDE FAN BOOK Here's A Message Jennifer Sends Mariah Fans: Once in a while I have the chance to meet Mariah Carey. I was thinking of doing something special for Mariah the next time she comes to Holland. A lot of people made fanbooks for Mariah during her Rainbow tour. I didn't had enough time to make one before I went to any of those concerts. That's why I want to make a fanbook for Mariah now. And not a fanbook that only has stories from Dutch fans in it, but I want to make one with stories and pictures in it from fans all over the world. See it as a tribute to Mariah Carey. I've been working on this fanbook for a little while now, but I still don't have enough stories. So YOU can be a part of that fanbook. You can write a poem, letter or just a note to her. Maybe you wanna say what you think about the Rainbow Tour, or you can tell a story about how you became a fan. Or just a simple Thank You for the last 10 (beautiful) years. Anything you want Mariah to now. It doesn't matter if you're from Holland, Germany, United States, China, Honkong, France, Australia etc... You can even send a picture of you. FAITH HILL TO ATTEND L.A. PREMIERE OF "GRINCH" Faith Hill will be among the stars walking the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of the Dr. Seuss movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas, on November 8 at Universal Amphitheatre. The film, which stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch, will open nationwide on November 17. The film's soundtrack will be in stores on November 7, and features Hill performing the Mariah Carey-penned song "Where Are You Christmas?" Hill intends to include the song on her first full Christmas album, which she hopes to have completed in time for the holidays next year. "Where Are You Christmas?" struck a chord with Hill from the first time she heard it. "The project was brought to me, and of course, I know the story of the Grinch - we all do," she says. But I heard the song and I thought, Oh, gosh, I would record this for my own Christmas album, so there was no question that I wanted to do it." Hill has already seen portions of the movie because several clips are included in the video for "Where Are You Christmas?" The singer says she was blown away by Carrey's portrayal of the infamous character. She explains, "After seeing parts of the movie with Jim Carrey - I think he's amazing in it. I really do. He's a master at it," she says. "I just can't imagine anybody else doing that role. There's nobody that could, without a doubt." THE LOVE OF THE IRISH Despite being branded boring by J from Five, the Westlife boys are hot property at the moment. They tell us about their new single 'My Love' and get all slushy and romantic as they take our Love Test. Your new single, 'My Love', is out on 30th October. What's it about? Mark: It's about the feeling of being at home and the places of home that you remember. It's a feel good song thinking about the good memories you have from home - in our case Ireland. How did it feel to beat all the records when the Mariah Carey duet went in to Number One? Shane: It was brilliant. We didn't expect it because we didn't do much promotion as we were out of the country recording our album and Mariah was doing a movie in Canada. We're very very happy, we broke our own record and it's pretty cool to be able to do that. Hopefully this one will do the same. What was Mariah like to work with? Kian: Mariah was really nice to work with. You hear lots of rumors about Mariah, that she's very egotistical and other bad stories but I have to say that they're untrue. We had a lot of fun with Mariah and we found her a very down to earth person. Did you like the Phil Collins version when you were younger? Mark: It's excellent, yes. I was really happy when Mariah covered that song on her 'Rainbow' album because it was a favorite of mine when it came out the first time. Her version of it blew me away. Have you got any other collaborations or covers in mind? Shane: No, not at the moment Mark: Eminem keeps on ringing us up! Shane: Yeah, I wish he'd stop ringing! No, I think we've done the best duet we can do artist wise, with a female singer anyway. We just want to concentrate on Westlife, do our world tour and maybe on the third or fourth album we might do something. Are you planning any up tempo numbers soon? Kian: For our new album, 'Coast to Coast' we've recorded four to five up tempo songs and we're very happy about that because on the last album we didn't really have any uptempo songs. There are definitely two uptempo songs that we are considering for singles so we're very happy about that too! Looks like the 'My Love' video is shot in Ireland - do you find Ireland a very romantic place? Mark: It was shot in Ireland in a place called the Cliffs of Mohar, which are beautiful cliffs on the coast of Ireland and also on a beach and a railway station in Limerick and Shannon airport, so it's all shot in Ireland. Shane: It's our favorite place in the world and it's definitely a great place to take a girl. There are so many beaches and private places you can go... Mark: Woods and stuff! Will you be releasing a record hoping for a xmas number one? Kian: Yes we are going to release a record around Christmas. It's not really about going for Christmas Number One, we just want Westlife to be on the radio at Christmas time. We've got some beautiful songs that we're talking about releasing: 'Angels Wings', 'What Makes A Man', 'Soledad' - but we're not sure which one yet -we'll have to make a decision soon! MARIAH CAREY DIVAS ON Mariah Carey is getting a reputation for being a diva on both sides of the Atlantic, MSNBC Online says. The singer recently appeared on GMTV, a hugely popular British talk show. Afterward, the host of GMTV, Lorraine Kelly, told people that Carey was among the rudest, most arrogant guest she ever had on her show, calling her "flaky" and "self-obsessed." This week, Kelly went on "The Frank Skinner Show", a syndicated British show, and blasted Carey again. Kelly said that the biggest star's entourage, the more unpleasant the star - and that Carey has a "posse." One of them, Kelly said, had the unpleasant task of holding his hand while Carey finished her chewing gum. Carey then placed the saliva-covered gum in his palm. WESTLIFE: LIVING THEIR WAY 
All five boys talk about music, fame, Spice Girls, media, Awards, living under pressure, having breakdowns between shopping trips and how to look Mariah Carey in the two balls… erm, eyeballs.The duel of genders is on the cards, already code-named ‘Super Monday’, a girl-band with its third album versus a boy band with its second full-length record. Spice Girls’ album ‘Forever’ is released the same day the Westlife’s ‘Coast To Coast’ and the Posh Becks (Victoria Beckham) said that they’d wipe the floor with the Irish lads. The boys’ career has been rather a dream come true story and their response is “We’re going to kick their pretty asses!”. The outcome will be decided by fans’ devotion and pocket money. Westlife’s fivesome of Bryan McFadden, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan have recently scored their sixth straight-to-Number-One hit, the latest being a cover of Phil Collins’s ‘Against All Odds’ with a little help of the divine Mariah Carey. Five million copies of the self-titled album are behind them and they have even managed to crack America, the traditionally hard-nut for not only British boy- but also any bands. ‘Coast To Coast’ features ‘Fragile Heart’ written by McFadden, Egan and Filan and the album is being launched by a mammoth 24-hour journey around Britain, visiting Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London. Ten days later the group will find out their standing with the MTV Europe viewers as they are nominated for the Best UK & Ireland Act Award. Their debut headlining tour of Britain, commencing in February next year and taking in 38 arenas, sold out in a few, record breaking, hours. We faced the five members with a series of question starting with whether they feel pressure of all the success they’ve had? Bryan McFadden: “In a sense because you really wonder what will happen. We’ve had such huge success that has amazed us, we are very grateful for everything and we have to ask ourselves whether it will continue. We want our music to be popular and successful but it will not be the end of the world if we don’t get another Number One.” Posh Beckham has issued a challenge while dissing you? Kian Egan: “She has and we’ll see what happens. It is a head-to-head but it wasn’t planned like that. It just happened and it is up to our fans against theirs to battle it out.” Are you confident about your chances? Mark Feehily: “That’s difficult to answer because it is not a question about our confidence, we believe in what we’ve done and have hopes, but outselling competition is not really up to us. It depends on so many other factors and I wouldn’t like to put money on a bet.” How do you feel about the new album? BMcF: “We love it and are really happy and excited to sing new songs. There is more of a positive feel, but there are still ballads on it, to give it a bit more restrained, emotional content. There is variety on it and we have really developed our own style.”  That doesn’t mean that comparisons with Backstreet Boys and N’Sync will stop?Nicky Byrne: “That is another thing we can do nothing about and it is so unfair. We don’t try to imitate them and we do our own thing. We do our kinds of songs and they do their own. We are not trying to copy anybody.” Still, the media continues to be dismissive of you? KE: “These are opinions of certain people who appear not to like what we do. That’s their right and they can print their opinions. It is hurtful but it only lasts a short while and then you get on with it. We’ve also learnt not to take what people write too seriously. “The negativity of media is countered by popularity, one hopes?” Shane Filan: “Certainly because we experience reaction of people so much more and directly. One lesson we’ve learnt about media is to be careful what we say to certain publications. In the beginning we weren’t sure what and how to answer certain questions but you learn.” There are a lot of rumours about you; how do you react to them? MF: “Music career demands hard work, which is a really difficult to handle on the physical side. But, the attention of tabloid press and stories they print about us are really difficult to take and it is more worrying. Some are funny and you know they can’t be true but what we know - our parents don’t and they really get worried about it all. That’s the price you have to pay and we are paying it.” KE: “It’s very strange to read in the papers about everything you do and it is made to sound like it is important. Like having a haircut, or something.” How much does all these interfere with you private lives? NB: “What private lives? We have none!” BMcF: “True, we haven’t got any because we work all the time. And what little time we have we tend to spend with our families because we hardly ever see them. So, there is no time for much privacy and enjoyment.” Which was demonstrated during your American trip when some of you had to get off the lunatic promotional carrousel? BMcF: “Nobody ever tells you what hard work it is being in a band… Probably, even if they did, you wouldn’t listen or believe it, until you discover it for yourself. Well, I got nervous exhaustion and had to take a few days off to recover. Then, Mark’s grandfather died and he had to go to his funeral and then Shane had to go back for his sister’s wedding.”  Your last single was with Mariah Carey; how did that collaboration happen?KE: “It was suggested and we all jumped at it. We first met at the American Music Awards and were speechless. The next time was when we recorded together.” Ms Carey is renown for her minimalist dress-style; how did you manage to keep your eyes above the microphone level? NB: “It was very difficult although she has beautiful eyes!” SF: “When she came to the studio she wore hot pants, a belly top and high heels with her hair tied back and with glasses on…” NB: “She is a great singer, a great character and a beautiful woman!” She is known for her shopping power; do you shop yourselves or you have assistants taking care of it? KE: “No, we buy our own stuff and all have different taste.” Is there a shopaholic among you? BMcF: “It’s definitely me, I buy a lot.” SF: “And he buys anything, sometimes he comes back with things you can’t believe!” MTV Euro Awards are imminent and you are nominated, how do you feel about competitions of this kind? NB: “It is very satisfying and we are really happy. Just to be nominated is special because it acknowledges your achievement…” KE: “This one is even more important because fans actually vote for it and it is not industry given. You know that the kids vote and that makes it really special.” You’ve been to America, you’ve had success there and one wonders would you base yourselves there if your career demanded? MF: “I think we all like it there but it is the States. I think I can speak for everybody when I say that we wouldn’t move there because it is so different from the way we were brought up. We’d miss our homes and families so we’d have to fly back all the time. We also have an impression that is not really good for your health and everybody is stressed out all the time, like they never relax. NOT PASSIONATE ANYMORE Jennifer Lopez's new album, The Passionate Journey, was supposed to be released Nov. 7. Epic, the Latina diva's label, originally announced that the follow-up to her million-selling album, On the 6, would be out on Election Day. b This is not good news for the Sony bottom line, since Lopez's CD will miss the third quarter of the fiscal year. And the company is in questionable shape elsewhere since Mariah Carey and Celine Dion are currently in limbo, any future Michael Jackson project is a mystery, and Ricky Martin's new album, due Nov. 14, is a question mark. His latest single, "She Bangs," is not a huge radio hit so far (although that may change when Sony actually releases the single to stores at a discounted price.) Despite bad reviews, Lopez's first album, On the 6, was a chart hit. (There's no denying that "Waiting for Tonight" was very catchy.) And, of course, the famous scarf dress she wore at last year's Grammys was an even bigger hit. Lopez has recorded a couple of tracks with wunderkind Rodney Jerkins, who is also supposedly working with Jackson on his new album. There was also talk that her boyfriend, Puff Daddy, who starts a trial in January for weapon possession and general arrogance, was producing tracks. Lopez's manager, Benny Medina, once managed Puffy as well. An Epic spokesman says, "Jennifer was so busy making movies she didn't have time to finish the album. MARIAH LEAVES A MESSAGE FOR HOWARD STERN Radio Mariah is at it again. The aspiring movie star/singer Mariah Carey is leaving messages on her Web site again for anyone who'll listen. You may recall that earlier this summer Carey was complaining that politics at her label, Sony, were preventing her from having another number one hit. Now Carey, who's been filming All That Glitters since July 29th, has left a new message on a fan's answering machine. Sighing, she announces: "Okay, so now I'm gonnoo [sic] feel totally inhibited about leaving messages on this thing. Because it seems the messages somehow have become fodder for the Howard Stern Show. But anyway, I'm not gonnoo [sic] stop calling or stop reading - get ready Howard - the FAN BOOKS! Which are books made by the fans. Because basically the fan books are more about you guys and how you relate to the music than me. And I sound relaxed because I am - so thank you and goodnight." Carey is then heard laughing hysterically as she hangs up. What caused all this? Apparently on October 25th Stern played a bunch of Mariah's looney messages on his show, courtesy of a guy named Vinnie Favale. Favale downloads the messages from Mariah's web site, as well as MP3 things and porno. Stern, of course, went to town dissecting the messages, particularly the stuff about Carey's "fan books." Evidently members of Carey's fan club regularly assemble scrapbooks with pictures of her and them and send them along for Mariah to peruse, Nora Desmond-style, in her free time.
