The term Corn Dolly is a modern one, coined in the 20th century. In earlier times the simple designs were known by their regional names, such as Maiden, Kirn, Mare, Neck or Mell. This design is a reproduction of a 19th century Cumbrian (England) design. Made at the end of harvest, an apple was enclosed in plaits and hung in the farmhouse kitchen until Christmas Day when the apple was given to the oldest servant and the corn to the best cow. |
