Erika Marie Burch was born on June 13, 2000, at the Flagstaff Medical Center. Unfortunately, Erika had to be stubborn and try to come out backwards. She was only 6 pounds, 0.6 ounces, 19 inches long, and considering the small size, the doctors were unable to get here turned around. Paula had to have a C-section on that night. Paula didn't want to have the baby on the 13th to avoid having any birthdays on Friday the 13th. The surgery was a little quicker than expected and at 11:56 P.M. our little miracle was born. Unlike our other two children, where I have always been able to help with the delivery, I had to stand at the head of the table and watch. Paula's nurse midwife, Tish Cazel, helped to take some of the pictures. She also delivered Colton seven years ago. She is a wonderful person and quite good at her job. I couldn't thank her enough for everything she has done for us. Thanks Tish!
Paula was a trooper through the whole thing. She did say she felt cheated, as she couldn't hold the baby immediately after it was delivered. Dad got to have the baby for over an hour before we brought her back to Paula for her first feeding. Delivering by C-section seems to be less stressful on the babies and Erika was full of energy immediately after. Her head was round, she was alert and hungry.
