January 6, 2003.  I had the opportunity to visit Deb's 5th grade classroom.  While I was deployed to the desert, the kids all wrote letters to me and the rest of the folks I was deployed with.  They asked some great questions and wished us all well, so I made it a point to stop in and let them know how much their letters meant to all of us over there.  Before I came home, myself and another crewmember made a video of our tent, the tent-city we were living in and our aircraft.  Mostly, they were fascinated by the desert surroundings.  A lot of them asked in their letters if we had seen any camels yet, among other great questions.  The video tape was well received.  Their favorite part was not the tour of the flight deck with all the switches and stuff, but they seemed to get more of a kick out of the cargo compartment and all the stuff we could fit back there!  They seemed to really enjoy seeing the cargo ramp opening up to a view of the desert.  During my visit to the class, we had a question and answer period and then some lunch.  Deb ordered pizzas, but the real lunch were the three MRE's (meal ready to eat) that I brought to show them.  We heated up some of the government's best food using the heating elements that come in the kits.  Everyone got a little taste of the Pasta with Vegetables, peaches (freeze dried) and peanut butter and crackers. Even Deb tried a little, check out the face she makes.  After the great lunch we made balsa wood gliders and flew them around the room.  It was a miracle no one lost an eye.  We finished the day with Air National Guard temporary tattoos and stickers.  All and all a great day!  - Michael
