July update:

Dearest family,
Due to some news which I feel is important and informative, I have decided to send out an update to the July family newsletter. First of all I want to update you on the grandson of Renee and Darren Whitehead, Daniel Garcia. I received a note from Renee yesterday which contained some good news. We are so thrilled that the news is so positive!
Here is that letter:
Daniel has once again endured another MRI and Hearing Test! He has come out of both remarkable well. They had to put him to sleep and put a breathing tube in, but he is now out of it all and mad at the world. He isn't quite ready to eat yet and they said his throat is probably sore from the tube but he is going to get to go home and not have to spend the night in the hospital. Now for the results that we know!

Our baby is hearing PERFECTLY!!! There is absolutely no damage to his hearing!!!!!!

The results of the MRI will be given at his neurologist appointment on Monday! Keep praying as we all know the power of prayer. I'll keep you posted when we know the results and thanks for all you prayers.

Sincerely,

Darren and Renee'
and all the family of Daniel Garcia

Last evening I received a call from my nephew, Dean Smith. Dean had been in the hospital for the last few days with stomach problems. Finally they got a diagnosis which Dean and I feel that all of you need to be aware. He was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue, which is an inherited disease. He was told that the disease is common in people with Northern Europe ancestors. I have included the countries which are included in Northern Europe. So, no matter if this is a McElyea contribution to our genealogical make-up or not, all of our families in our direct line are from the northern European countries. There is a blood test that can be done to confirm if Celiac Sprue is in our systems or it may be diagnosed by a biopsy of the small intestine. This is how Dean's was found. I have included a website that Dean gave me to educate you on the disease. If you or anyone in your family or families have any stomach problems which are irritating you might want to check this out. Also an interesting sidenote is that one of the symptoms is a certain type of dermatitis, called Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Strangely enough, I am just now getting over a bout of a possible case of that myself. About three months ago, I started having a rash on my lower leg which caused severe itching. It sounds a lot like this and if it recurs, I will certainly have it checked out. All of my life I have had stomach problems but they have never been diagnosed as anything but nerves. As soon as possible, I hope to find out if this may be my problem but for now, I am going to change my eating habits. Following is the information, you should be able just to click on the site but if not, the site address is: http://www.csaceliacs.org/dh_defined.php
Diagnosis of Celiac Disease

The following countries are what is considered Northern Europe.

Northern Europe includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Subdivisions within the group includes:
Scandinavia, i.e. Sweden, Norway, Denmark
Nordic countries, i.e. Scandinavia plus Finland and Iceland.
Baltic States, i.e. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
British Isles, which includes United Kingdom and Ireland
others, e.g. Northern parts of Germany, The Netherlands, partly Poland

Aunt Wanda was hospitalized after the newsletter went out but is home doing better now. They found that she was anemic and very low on sodium. This following a long bout with her Meneire's Disease! Hope she is on the road to better health now. Uncle Francis is having some problems now with his breathing.

Here is an update on Laurie Day, the daughter of Janie Smith, from David. Sounds somewhat hopeful and we would appreciate prayers on Laurie's behalf. From David:
I talked to Laurie and Janie last night. Laurie got to go home for a few hours so she was pretty happy. She sounded real good and didn't sound like she was drugged like she has in the past. She is also taking the rehab and Janie says she is doing real good in that. Who knows she may surprise everyone like she did when they were saying she would be dead in a week (which was months ago) and actually get her strength back where she can go home for good? Hope so anyway. She is a fighter!

Ring and Raye Vern's niece, Shawna, had an anurysum a week or so ago, she is improving but your prayers on her behalf would be welcomed. Here is her letter, dated 7/23.:Ring talked to Sharlot last night and Shawna was improving some. Don't know if I told yall or not, they had gone to visit her and Ross a week ago this past Tuesday. That night Shawna went to bed with a migraine. She didn't wake up on Wednesday morning. They called for an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. She had an anurism (msp). For the past 10 days she has been on life support and they have the right side of her skull removed and stored in a vault for reattaching later. The swelling has gone down some. They told them that she had a 50/50 chance of being ok. Anyway, Sharlot and Doug came home Monday as Sharlot was scheduled for surgery Wednesday morning. She had 3 'trigger' fingers and they had to go in and repair that. She did great and they were back on the road to Dallas on Wednesday afternoon about 1 p.m. She called that night and told us that when they talk to Shawna, she would move her head. Then Sharlot started to tell her that she & Doug had gotten cellphones and they were amazed at having to learn them! (this is from the couple that didn't have an answering machine until 3 months ago! and no caller i.d.) Anyway, Sharlot got to laughing telling Shawna about it and Shawna opened her eyes! As of last night, she continues to improve and the swelling is going down. They told them when she is ok, and they take out the tubes (for breathing) that she will probably be in therapy for 18 months to 2 years. At this time, her brain can't tell her to breath, so that won't be doing that real soon

Mother seems to be doing some better adjusting to the nursing home. She is having a lot of problems with her feet swelling but the doctor has ordered medication for that, so we are hoping it helps soon. She also is suffering from shingles, which is something she sure doesn't need added to her list of things wrong with her.

Wedding in the family: On Saturday evening, the 24th, Holly McElyea and Mike Atkins, Jr. were married at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catolic Church. I wasn't able to attend but Uncle Randy and my sis, Raye Vern were there. Also attending were all of Holly's aunts and families, Judy and Marshall Finley, Heather and Brad Holcomb and sons, Terry and Robert Gaines, Robin and Prairie Gaines, Karen and R. D. Henson, I'm not sure if any of Karen's kids attended, and Holly's grandmother, Betty McElyea Patterson, and uncle, Ken Copeland. From what I have heard it was a very nice wedding and of course, Holly was beautiful! Hopefully by the August newsletter, I will have pictures.

Welcome back to the Irving area to Dale, Rhonda and family. They just returned from a vacation to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. They are really into scuba diving and snorkeling.

***

Also back in the Josephine area from a Louisana camp-out vacation is the Kaven Mitchell family. They were accompanied by Arvilla and Kayla. Sounds as if a good time was had by all.

***

Aunt Violet is back home after a two months visit with Tammy and Jim. Actually a visit isn't quite correct as she was recuperating from a broken foot. She is doing much better now and is glad to be at home. As Dorothy in "The Wizard of OZ" related, there is "No Place Like Home."

News from San Antonio is good! I talked with Rhenae and found that Aunt Sue and Uncle Calvin are doing well. Rhenae's family aong with Sharon's are doing well, also. Rhenae and I had a very nice visit via telephone. She said she really doesn't have time for e-mail but said she does enjoy the newsletter. That of course, is great news! I enjoy knowing it is read.
After talking with her, I gave Daymon a quick call and found him to be at home. Sometimes it is hard to catch anyone at home there, with both he and Maureen working. It was good to chat with him for a while. He will be in Indiana next week on a business trip. He said the company he works for is opening an place in Katy so that is keeping him really busy. Don't remember the name of the company but he sells motor homes and travel trailers! It is always to good to get to visit with family over the phone, by mail or e-mail, BUT, nothing takes the place of a real personal visit. Anyone interested in a Reunion?

***
Mona and Don are finally in a home again! They got a place on base and are getting settled in. The kids are doing well in Colorado. Mindy is working a the Olive Garden. She said being a waiteress is really hard work!
***
MariAnn had some moles removed this week. She did it mainly for cosmetic reasons but since her Dad died of melanoma in a mole, years ago, I am so glad. Maybe we won't have to worry about that.
***
Well, this is the update for this month. Hopefully you will be able to access the site about Celiac disease. Love to all!

July 2004

Happy July 4th! OK, so I know it's late but I hope that you had a good one. Filled with good food, friends, family, fireworks and just an all around great day! Ours was spent at home with Madaleine and family! We had a good time! Then we enjoyed fireworks at home and downtown at the Firecracker Fandango! Isn't it great to live a country where we can be free to celebrate the freedoms we have? Please remember to pray for our military and others who are working to help others obtain the same freedoms we take for granted!

News of Interest

There will be a McElyea Family Reunion at the Elora Community Center,
Elora, Tennessee starting at 11:00 AM CST on Saturday, July 17, 2004. [
"Pot luck meal at 12:00 noon and Family Auction and Talent Show will be
included after the Noon-time Meal" ]. Use www.mapquest.com to locate
Elora, Tennessee.

Talked with Aunt Violet on Thursday, the 15th, she is hoping to get to go back to her house in a couple of weeks. She is finally able to put some weight on her foot but is still not feeling 100%.

Also have talked with Aunt Wanda, they are all about the same. Her vertigo is some better but she is really bothered with her feet and legs swelling from the heat! Kaven, Dawn, Paige, Arvilla and Kayla have gone to Louisiana for a camping trip. I hope they have a good time but I'm sure it won't hold a candle to our wonderful memories of camping in the Gila Wilderness. Of course, they certainly won't know the excitement and FEAR of Uncle Francis driving around the one lane mountain roads while one side of his schoolbus camper barely held on to the road. That was a very fearful trip to get there and back but the camping while there was great!

Just got off the phone with Aunt Sue McElyea. She and Uncle Calvin seem to be doing very well. She said they have been cleaning out their garage to get rid of some things. Like most of us, they have things they wonder why on earth they ever bought or why they kept. All in their family are doing well as far as she knows. While we were talking I went into my Family Tree Maker and found a coincidence I had not noticed before. Natalie Sedgwick, daughter of Rhenae and John Viner shares the same birthday with Mariann's eldest son, Trey. The 21st of July. But the coincidence doesn't stop there, Natalie's eldest daughter, Siobahn, shares the same birthday with Maverick, Trey and Christina's son on the 30th of July. Strange!

Things with our family are going well! Mother is still having trouble adjusting to life in a nursing home. I pray that she will soon adjust as she at least has 24 hour care even though sometimes it isn't as soon as she wants. She has a good roommate, Mrs. Bankhead. Although at this time, they are having some conflicts, we are praying they can work through them. Nothing serious but Mother is really cold natured and Mrs. Bankhead like at least, a little air. Just things like that! RV, is really having a time at work since the Superintendent resigned. Auditors and so forth really keep her busy! Amanda is finally recovering from her tonsillectomy earlier this month or the last part of June. She really has had a lot of pain! All the rest in the Bell family are doing well. Our family is doing okay. We still have the usual aches and pains but defintiely expect some at our age. I am now married to a 69 year old man! My goodness, what happened to the young man I married ever so many years ago? We do feel though that having our youngest grandchild living next door keeps us younger. Madaleine's son, Austin is now 19 months old. A real bundle of energy who keeps us all hopping and on our toes! We had a nice visit with Liz this past weekend. She came to help Clinton celebrate his birthday. Hope you all enjoy this newsletter and will, please, contribute something for the August issue!

Medical News:

Aunt Wanda Mitchell has recently been diagnosed with Meniere's Disease.  She was told it is heredity so I wanted to include this information for your review.

What is Meniere's Disease?
Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear, that causes the patient to suffer from the following symptoms:
1. Fluctuating hearing loss
2. Episodes of vertigo
3. Ringing in the Ears (Tinnitus)
4. A sensation of fullness or plugging of the ears.
What causes Meniere's Disease?
The actual cause of Meniere's disease is unknown. It was once felt that Meniere's disease represented a disorder of fluid regulation within the inner ear causing excessive fluid and salt to accumulate within the inner ear. While still controversial, the latest scientific data cast serious doubt over the validity of this theory. It appears quite likely that abnormalities in fluid regulation do not play a major role in the development of Meniere's disease. Unfortunately, while the new data suggests that fluid regulation is not at fault in Meniere's disease, we still don't know what does cause this inner ear disorder.
What triggers the onset of Meniere's Disease?
While we aren't sure as to what actually goes wrong in the inner ear in Meniere's disease, we do know that specific events may trigger the onset of this disorder. For example, trauma to the head may cause, in a small number of people, symptoms of Meniere's disease. Stress and anxiety appear to play an important role in triggering Meniere's attacks. Recent data suggest that abnormalities in the immune system, the system designed to fight infection, may trigger the onset of Meniere's disease in a small number of patients. In the vast majority of patients, no specific event can be identified that causes the onset of Meniere's disease. Identifying these triggers remains a main focus of research in Meniere's disease.

From Melvin Ward, a McElyea descendant:
There are several others in the McElyea clan who have had cancer. Otis Leon {Buster] Ward
His son Travis. Clifton son of Mary Eula [Ward] Pylant. Alton & Carl son of Lillian [Ward] Anthony. They died as far as we know from lung cancer from smoking. They are decendants
of Oscar & Ola[McElyea] Ward.
Melvin also had heart bypass surgery in 1981.  There were six bypasses done.
*Note: Ola McElyea was the sister of Fred McElyea
My mother,Ola, had a large mole removed from her shoulder, this was before knowledge about sending it for diagnosis. She died about eighteen months after. She weighed about 150 pounds, at death 85.

After receiving this news from Wanda McElyea Mitchell, it seems that perhaps the breast cancer may be down the Hall line.
Runette Johnston died of breast cancer, Vernice might recall her grandmothers name it was Ethel Hall.

Family News

From Natalie Viner Sedgwick:
I wanted to give you an update as to what is going on in our family.  My husband, Harold, graduated from the University of North Texas 8 May with a Bachelor's degree in Emergency Management.  As we have not yet found him a job in this line of work he is still working as an Optician in Dallas.  I have quit my speech therapy job to return to optics myself.  ($.20 per mile isn't squat when the majority of your clients are about 50 miles from your home.  I am returning to school this summer to seek certification to teach and to complete my Master's in Speech Pathology,  Siobahn will be starting high school this fall (OH MY GOD!!!!!!) and Shannon is already in 2nd grade with Shela starting Kinder this year.  I am hopeful that by the end of Summer I will be out of optics again and will have secured a position in Deaf Education.  Such a position would save us a small fortune in Daycare especially during the summer and holidays!!!!!!!

Letter from Serviceman:

Letter from Calvin:

May 14, 1945
Somewhere at sea

Dearest Mother and all,

I will try and write you a few lines today just to let you know how I
am. I am ok except for being lonesome as you know I am back out at sea.
I am on the same type of ship that I used to be on. It is a new one and
everything is new to me but I don't think it will take me long to catch
on to it. There is one thing that I wish and that is that I had got a
different kind of ship, as I had all of this kind of duty I wanted on the
other ship I was on.
I sure wish I could have got to see Mary Sue and Daymon before I had to
come back out to sea but I didn't get to. I wouldn't have mind coming
back out to sea so bad if I could have gone to see them before I Left.
I just hope this war don't last too much longer so I can go home to
stay. I sure hope I can be home when the baby is borned, but I don't
guess I can be something might happpen that I would get to. I hope
and pray it does.
Have you heard from J.D. lately and did he say when he thought he
might get to come to the states? I sure hope he that he will get to
come home soon but I guess it will be ? or six months before he will
get to though. I wonder how many points he has, not very many I guess
as he hasn't seen any action. Boy, I sure wish that point system work
with the Navy I would have enough. I have 45 on battle stars alone
but I guess the guys in the navy will be the last to get out.
Mama when was the last time you heard from daddy. how is he liking where
he is? Mary Sue said in her last letter that Mr. Holland had quit at
the plant because the paint was about to get him down. I wrote Mary Sue
and Daymon a letter yesterday so I could mail it when we get in a port
someplace.
Well, Mama I will close for this time as I don't know any more news to
write. I will let you know more about how I like the ship after I am
on here a little longer. Be good and take care of yourselves and we
will see you all when the war is over if not before.
Lots of Love your son,
Calvin

Six Ways to Keep Your Memory Sharp

physical exercise: Regular aerobic workouts help ensure a healthy oxygen flow to the brain.

mental exercise: To remember more, learn more. Try crossword puzzles or even simple actions, like brushing your teeth with the opposite hand and knitting a new stitch.

sleep: Try to get at least eight hours of shut-eye a night.

the right food: Eat plenty of chicken, fish, spinach, and fortified soy milk and cereal for B vitamins, as well as blueberries, strawberries, and other deeply hued fruits and vegetables, which are full of antioxidants.

destress: Try incorporating yoga, deep breathing exercises, or a warm bath into your evening routine.

mindfulness: The more attentive you are, the more you'll remember. Instead of trying to do three things at once, try to prioritize your tasks -- giving each one your full attention before moving on to the next.

Remembering Where You Put Your Keys
Train yourself to put them in the same place every time you walk in the door. Put hooks on the back of your door or place a dish next to your mail.

There is also an update on the grandbaby of Darren and Renee,dated May 13, 2004. The new grandbaby that was mentioned in this newsletter is in the hospital. Timothy Daniel Garcia is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cook's Childrens Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas. Timothy is suffering from Bacterial Meningitis. Because of that the doctors say he has had some minor strokes because of scarring on the brain from the meningitis. Darren and Renee have requested prayers on his behalf. The doctors feel that this will not be a fatal thing but they have told the family that he will most likely have some handicapping disability because of the effects from this illness.

This note was received on June 1, "Thank you so much for all the prayers and well wishes. Our little Daniel is doing much better and it looks like we will be able to bring him home on Saturday, (that would have been the 29th, and he did go home), They say he has significant brain damage but he is doing things he shouldn't be. We just keep praying and know, God isn't through with him yet!" Please continue to keep Daniel and his family in your prayers! Also Thank God for his recovery so far!

Our deepest sympathy is sent to Aunt Sue McElyea in the death of her sister, Wanda Nell. Wanda Nell had been very ill. Even though I know it was hard to lose her, I'm sure they are all thankful she is now with the Lord and free of her earthly pain and suffering.

Medical News of Interest:

Violet McElyea Walker fell a few days ago, about the 5th, I think, and broke her leg. I talked with her today, the 8th and she is feeling okay. She is staying at Tammy and Jim's while her leg mends. At this time they have a compression cast or whatever they call it until some more swelling goes down. She is upset about the break but thankful it wasn't worse. She is also very proud of her great-grandson, Gregory Burleson, for being able to keep a cool head at the ripe old age of three. When Violet fell Gregory was the only one around to help. She asked him to go inside and get her the phone, he did. Then he got her a chair to set in until help arrived. A Gold star for Gregory!*

Edith Hope Lewis, daughter of the late Tink and Viola Hall Thompson, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Viola was the sister of grandmother, Hattie Hall McElyea. With this new breast cancer in the family, we all should be aware that it seems to be striking any of us with a Hall-Prisk connection. So far, the ones we have who have been affected are: Annie Hall Beene, deceased from breast cancer, Dorothy Ruth Hall Martin, deceased from breast cancer, Violet McElyea Walker, cancer survivor, Wanda McElyea Mitchell, cancer survivor, Terry McElyea Gaines, cancer survivor, Donna Kay Prescott Thomasson, cancer survivor and now, Edith Hope. Also on the McElyea side of the family we had Aunt Ola McElyea Ward, who died of most likely malignant melanoma, from a cancerous mole, she was Granddaddy McElyea's sister. Christian Belew Davis, grandmother to Fred McElyea, died of cancer of the womb. Fred,(granddaddy McElyea) died of a massive heart attack, he also had bladder cancer. My brother, Don Smith, died of kidney cancer. Uncle J.D. McElyea also died as a result of cancer. He was diasgnosed with lung cancer but by the time it was detected it had invaded his body. There may be more of which I am unaware. There are several in the family who have had easily treatable skin cancers. Just a note: This isn't meant to scare or alarm anyone, only a message to let you be aware and concious of these facts. If you have any suspicious concerns please have them checked out.

Mother is still in the Care Center. She really does appreciate all of the cards, flowers and phone calls she has received. She also loves the visits she gets. So, if you live near enough to visit, please do! At this time, she is the only resident in the room she is occupying. Her roommate passed away this past Sunday, I think. Thankfully Mrs. Jones had been removed to the hospital with pneumonia so Mother didn't have the trauma of her dying in the room. I visited with her a while yesterday afternoon. She does seem to be adjusting as well as anyone can. Again thanks for all of your concern and so forth!

June 17: Well, we thought that Mother would be leaving the nursing home this coming week, but no! She fell last weekend and it has set her back a bit. So far as we know nothing was broken but she is still achey after the fall. She has not been able to do any physical theraphy nor is she able to get up by herself. So right now everything is on hold! She asked me today to please let everyone know how very much she appreciates your cards, letters, phone calls and visits.

News from the Francis and Wanda Mitchell family:

I don't have much to write on our family, here in our own little area there is nothing except the same stuff all the time. The only thing new is we are getting lots of Apricots on the one tree that survived the four or five years of Grasshopper invasions. I have and will make some Apricot Butter, Jelly, preserves and fried pies, as well as eat until I am crammed full.:) I love fruit and boy I have waited a long time for this tree to produce. "All good things comes to those who wait" sure is true with this tree this year. We also are going to have a bumper crop of Figs, Persimmons and some grapes (hopefully on the latter). We had a lot of wild Raspberries but the coons, birds and Opossums get those before we can. We did get a few and they were good but very tart, even for me.:)
OK I guess all know that Arvilla and Justin had a wreck month before last when they met a mule over on highway six, so the van is down and all we have is the Caviler. Then this past week, Tony (Paula's spouse) had one and tore up his car when he ran into a fence. In doing so Dewayne received cut upper and lower lips, cut under his nose and a black eye. It would have been worse but Dewayne saw they were going to hit the fence and put his hands over his face. Though he was wearing his seat belt he was still thrown into the dash. Tony so far as I know wasn't hurt. Dewayne and Paula are eagerly awaiting the Boy Scouts camping trip in Oklahoma on a ranch as I understand it. Anyway they leave the 24 of this month and are to be gone a week. Paula is the medical person for the troop.
Kayla and Arvilla had planned to go home with Violet but now that Violet has broken her leg she won't be making the trip.
Kaven went on Company business to Logan, Utah for three days last week, he said he enjoyed it ant was really beautiful the mountains were all snow capped. Of course he had been up there and at Salt Lake City before but didn't remember it. I wonder why? Could be it is because he wasn't but about 6 or so months old.:) His family is doing fine, Paige like all kids was glad to see school come to an end, but within a couple of days found everyday boring.
Steve and family are doing well, Steve made a trip to Goodfellow AFB over the Memorial Day weekend to get Chris, he went on Friday then Monday he, Heidi and Melody took Chris back to San Angelo. Tyler left for church camp that morning for a week I think it was. Have not heard but guess he had a good time while there. I am sure Melody enjoyed some good times with Mom. I know Heidi is glad to not be working, for the summer I assume. Chris will graduate July 14 and they will be going down to Goodfellow for that and then Chris will come back with them with what is left there of his material processions. He will work at the AF Requiting office two weeks and have a two week leave before heading for his base in Korea. He has to check in there on or by August 15. So he will gone for at least a year over there.
As far as I know that takes care of the Mitchell families.
I did call Calvin day before yesterday and found he, like I had a tumor removed from his stomach when they did the upper GI. He hasn't receive the report back on the Biopsy, but I am praying he will get the same report as I did, "Benign" tumor.
Justin made the A & B. Honor roll again and will be a ninth grader this fall, where have the years one, he will turn 14 July 8th. And Tyler will be 16 on August 29 and Chris 21 on September 26, it just boggles my mind. Then I realize August 16 Kayla will turn 9 and the 15th. Darlene will be 33 and really realize how "old" I am getting to be. Anyway to get away from that and back to the subject of what I was going to write, Justin is going on a cruise to Cozamal, Mexico in July with his best friend Robbie, as well as Robbies Mother and her boyfriend, what a vacation that will be for him.
I don't know how the other grands and great grands did in school as I haven't heard.

Added note: While Wanda was writing this letter Arvilla was at the doctor. She came home with the news that perhaps, depending on how medicine that the doctor gave her, she may have to have a stent placed in her arteries. They seem to think she may have some blockage but will wait a couple of weeks to see how the medicine they gave her works. Also DeWayne will be undergoing some tests by a neurologist as he is haveing bad headaches and double vision. They want to check that out. Please remember them all in your prayers along with everyone in the family that may be ailing!

****Update: The MRI was done on DeWayne! They got the results back today, June 17, and he DOES NOT have a brain tumor. Praise the Lord for that! At this time, it hasn't been determined what the problem is but it isn't as serious as they thought.

Family meeting family:

Perhaps because of this newsletter more of our family is getting to know each other. During the time of the Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie, Steve Mitchell has gotten to meet two long lost cousins. No, not actually lost, but not seen in a long, long time. As I mentioned in the previous issue of the family news, Steve and Heidi have gotten to meet and enjoy getting to spend time with Halei Prichard, daughter of Kathy. Just recently, Natalie Viner Sedgwick and family went to Scarborough Faire and looked up Steve. They had a really nice visit. So good to know that they got together! I am envious! I have only talked to Natalie by telephone after seeing her for the first and only time that I remember over 20 years ago. From talking with her, I know she is someone I would love to meet. I haven't seen Halei in a few years but know she is a wonderful young woman. Looking forward to seeing her whenever she visits her grandparents, Randy and Vivian!

More news on Halei! Halei and a girlfriend were traveling to Kerrville to work at another festival. They were run off the road by an 18-wheeler into the concrete divider. They were then hit by another 18-wheeler. Pick-up truck they were driving was totaled but they only got scratches! The driver of the first truck, of course, went on and didn't stop to help. Very lucky young ladies and we are so thankul God was watching over them!

Speaking of Randy and Vivian! They have really been busy. In addition to traveling to Lubbock to see grandson, Jeremy, graduate they have been painting. They painted their living room in a beautiful sage green. Then I guess the painting bug must have bitten them really hard as they went outside and painted the whole house and trim. After finishing all of their painting they went next door paintbrushes, rollers and paint and painted a room for Aunt Violet.Talk about busy bees, they sure have been! Next, they headed for Amarillo to see Jordan graduate from high school. They make me tired to just think of what all they do.

More graduations:

Jeremy Kessler graduated from Texas Tech in Lubbock on May 15th. He received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Congratulations, Jeremy!

Harold Sedgwick, husband of Natalie Viner, graduated Saturday, May 8th from University of North Texas with a B.S. in Emergency Management.

Jordan Kassidy Harguess graduated May 28, 2004 from Amarillo High School. Jordan was a member of the National Honor Society. Jordan will be attending Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas this fall.

Mindy Ryan Tharp graduated in absentia from Harnett Central High School in Angier, North Carolina. The ceremony was held on May 28. Mindy actually had her hours completed during mid-term and moved back to Colorado. She has attended one semester of college at the Colorado Christian Academy in Lakewood.

Jessica RoseAnn Craig graduated on May 30, from Cypress Springs High School. The graduation ceremony was held at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

More school news: Natalie Viner Sedgwick has been accepted to the Master's program at Texas Woman's University for Fall. Natalie is a speech therapist.

A Grandmother remembers: Two of the young women who graduated this spring are my granddaughters. I just want to let them both know that it just doesn't seem possible that they are graduating from high school. As I thought about them graduating, I remember the day that Jessica called and in a somewhat trembling voice said, "Grandma, could you come to my school for Grandparents day?" I think she was probably in the third grade. I was so thrilled to be asked and was so glad to be able to go. I don't think I will ever forget that day and how proud I was that she had asked me to come to her school. A few years later, we were in Colorado when Mindy's class had a Grandparents day and once again I was asked to attend. I did and had a wonderful time. Little did I think at the time that soon these two would be graduating and embarking on a grown-up life so soon. My dear granddaughters, I pray that you will be mature enough to make good judgements in whatever you decide to do with your lives. You are both so precious to us and to your parents! You actually have the world at your feet and can attain so much if you only choose the right path. I envy you in the things that you can possibly aspire to do. When I was in school ever so many years ago, women really weren't expected to do much more than get married, keep the house and raise children. Only the very brightest were even considered college material. All of that has changed now and so many opportunities await you. Choose wisely my dearest granddaugters and remember that the choices you make now can affect your lives for years to come. May God bless and keep you in His care!

To all of you who are graduating, I congraulate you and wish you the same as I wish my granddaughters. Gods blessings on you all!

Wedding Bells ring for Marissa Joy Martin and Clifton Allen Miles on the 12th of June. The ceremony took place at the First Baptist Church in Brownwood. Parents of the couple at Mr and Mrs Richard Ewing Martin and Mr. and Mrs Robert Allen Miles. Clifton is the grandson of Council and Naomi Wells Hall. Council and Naomi's daughter Cindy is the proud mom.

*

In the last issue of the newsletter you will remember Council Hall as the sailor who wrote home to his parents. While having a telephone visit with Mother, she wanted to remind me that we now have six living generations. It is on the Hall side of the family as Uncle Council is the baby brother of Hattie Hall McElyea. So that makes 1. Council, 2. Vernice,3. Ann, 4.MariAnn, 5.Trey/Joey. 6. Maverick/Luna. Of course, it isn't in a direct line but I think that is very neat to at least still have 6 living generations. Council was the baby in the Hall family and is the only living survivor of that immediate family. There is less than six months difference in age between Uncle Calvin McElyea, the fourth child born to Hattie and Fred. This will be their 80th year milestone.

Letter from J.D. McElyea, dated Sept. 16, 1943

Dearest Mama and All,
I'll try and answer the letter that I got today, to let you know I was glad to hear from you. This leaves me o.k. and hope it finds everyone there o.k.
We haven't been doing much today we drilled awhile and took exercise and had two hours of class. We went on a hike this afternoon, about six miles. When we got I had to stand guard mount for guard duty tonite. I've already walked two hrs. and have two more to walk.
Well we finaly took the MTP test and passed it. But we had to take the articials of war over and the telephone section has to take their test over again. Captain Tucker told us this afternoon that he was pretty sure we would get the furloughs and I feel pretty safe that we will get them myself.
I got a letter from Vernice a day or two ago and she said the doctor told her that Ann would have to have her tonsils taken out before she would get well.
I haven't had a letter from Calvin in a few days.
Mama if you can get the money on those bonds cash them and send them to me. I'll need them if we do get the furloughs.
Well, I don't know anymore to write so I'll close for now, So ans. soon.
Love to all, J.D.

*(At 65, I still have my tonsils) This letter was not in an envelope so I don't know exactly where he was stationed. From other envelopes close to the same date, he may have been in Missouri.

I also received this letter from Steve Mitchell after the newsletter went out. Thanks for writing, Steve!

Ann,
Thanks for keeping us up on all the family news, you do a great job.

Nothing from here. Tyler and I are working at Scarborough Faire in
Waxahachie. It is a Renissance Festival that is in its 24th year I
think. Halei Prichard, Kathy's daughter is working there in the 'House
of Butterflies' with us. She then spends Saturday night with us. It is
great to have her stay with us and get to know her. Since we don't get
to see anyone much anymore and to my knowledge have never seen or met
Halei this is super. Melody, of course, thinks Halei is the greatest
thing in the world. On Saturday night the Halei and Tyler get home,
Melody is waiting and hoping her cousin can play a game with her, which
Halei also so good to do. Thanks Kathy for raising such a wonderful
daughter and to grandparents Randy and Vivian, thanks also!

Chris is now stationed in San Angelo for his Air Force Intelligence
training before going to South Korea. He is scheduled to finish his
training around the 12 of July then he is supposed to come home or about
a month and then he is to report to his new duty station in Korea on
August 15th. He brought a couple of friends home one weekend in April
and they went to Scarborough Faire. The friends are in the Air Force
with him in linguistice (Korean also) and will be going to Korea around
the same time as him. It will be nice that he will know someone over
there when he goes. The friends were from Maine and Wisconsin I think.

Heidi still works for Sylvan Learning centers and home schools Tyler and
Melody. Next week is there last week of school so they are all looking
forwar to that. She has been working on loosing weight through walking
and she is extremely happy to report that she has lost over 22 lbs and
actually weighs less now that she did when Christopher was born almost 21
years ago. I think she is somewhere around 120 lbs. and looks GREAT!!!!

Love to all.

Steve

This next item is a letter than was written by Uncle Council Hall, Grandmother McElyea's baby brother, during WWll. It was published in the Colorado City paper after he had written it to his parents, Maggie and R.D. Hall.

Petty Officer third class, Council Leon Hall,who has been in the service for seventeen months and since September, 1943 in foriegn service wrote this letter to his parents.

December 29th, 1944

Happy New Year, Folks ---

Our lookout forw'd just saw a couple of reindeer romping though the sky northward .... but we're hoping they are B-29's on their way to deliver a few late Christmas presents to the Japs in Tokyo's front yard, with plenty of 50 calibre tinsel and 1000 pound ornaments for Tojo's Christmas tree! Well, Folks, plenty happened this Christmas, we missed your swell cooking, Mom, and the chance to give Dad and new pair of slippers, why does everyone always give him slippers?) But we tried to make up for it by kicking Tojo in the pants__ twice. You'll read about it in the hometown newspaper, but let me give you a super-duper, eye-witness account of why we didn't have time to sing any Christmas carols. It was my Christmas present to the folks back home.

You know the Army boys have been walloping Tokyo with their B-29's. They've made it pretty hot for the Nips. Well, the Japs have an island a few hundred miles from Tokyo that needed some attention by our Navy and our idea of a Christmas present was a bombardmant of that island that the Japs would remember ---for several Yuletides. Our job was to "discourage 'em" as Dad would say when he gets out his old 20-guage to snag a chicken hawk.
Well, Folks, we really worked 'em over. We cruised up there first the day before Christmas (while you were laying out the presents around the Christmas Tree). We has some cruisers and destroyers. The Army worked with us on the show and their B-24 bombers pasted the Japs plenty before we moved in: some P-38's also went in and put the Nips in their foxholes (the idea was to keep their planes on the ground so they couldn't attack us.) They did a swell job.
Our targets were coastal guns, buildings, fuel dumps, ships, planes --
anything with the Jap red circle on it. We followed the navigator's "track" (that's our course) around the island and pumped our big shells into their gun positions; we lobbed over plenty of five-inch stuff, too. Folks, it was really something!
The noise was terrific, Powder fumes drifted back after every salvo and over a loud speaker the voice of our plane spotter came in, telling us the results of our fire. A few seconds after each salvo, from then on in, he would tell us the results and give us corrections.
We plugged at them for over an hour. We started some fires and shok 'em up plenty. We also did some counter-bettery ire; that is, we fired back at shore batteries that revealed themselves by shooting at us. It was better than a turkey shoot. folks, and we left a lot of Christmas Eve headaches for the Japs on that island that day.
Two of our destroyers chased a Jap destroyer 85 miles when shetried to escape. they caught the Jap and sunk her with shell fire-- pretty good, right? We also exploded a large landing ship. The captain of one of our destroyers and three men were wounded during the fight with the Jap ship and the Admiral who's in charge of the group) awarded them with the Purple Heart. They did a bang up job and they earned it.
Well, folks we gave the Japs on that island our second Christmas present right after Christmas, with trimmings. During that bombardment, we fired a Jap escort gunboat and another large landing ship in the boat basin, The gunboat blew up and the ammunition on the other ship was still exploding when we went over the horizon. Those Nips were sprry to see this Christmas holiday!
We raked their air fields with five-inch fre and poured in plenty of big stuff while our spotter kept saying; "Right on...no change..." Which meant we were hitting the target. We worked over boats and buildings and gun emplacements. In Navy language, Folks, it was 4.0---perfect. We hit on Jap plane dead center on the runway and when the smoke cleared there wasn't any plane. that made our Captain pretty happy and he passed around "well done."
We were all pretty tired when we pulled away from the island the second time, but I think everybody felt he had some of the Christmas spirit--although we were a long way from home, and when the Admiral's "well done" went up it gave us a good feeling; after all, Christmas is just a time when you give people presents---and this year our present to you was the walloping we handed the Nips on that island.
We spent Christmas of 1944 firing those guns so we could all be together as soon as possible for a big Christmas at home.
It made me feel pretty good, Folks---
Yours,
Council Leon Hall EM3/c
P.S. Who did give Dad his slippers this year?

From Dave Smith: This next piece is not news but a WAKE-UP call to those of us who are not cautious with our own lives. Please read and see what changes you can make to possibly make your life and those around you safer. Thank you, Dave for sending this. I have seen some things that I can certainly change to help myself.

Some good tips for women AND men.
Because of the recent abduction of Dru Sjodin, from Grand Forks
parking lot in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things
to do in an emergency situation...This is for you, and for you
to share with your wife, your children, everyone you know.
>
Please take the time to read this. I know you are smart enough
to know these pointers but there will be some, where you will
go "hmm I must remember that".
>
After reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It
never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
>
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on
your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
>
2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a
robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO
HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more
interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go
for the wallet/purse.
RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
>
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the
back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start
waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else
will. This has saved lives.
>
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,
eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or
making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be
watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to
get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell
you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK! THE
DOORS AND LEAVE.
>
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or
parking garage:
>
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the
passenger side floor, and in the back seat.
>
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from
the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by
pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to
get into their cars.
>
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your
vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in
the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the
mall,or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid
than dead.)
>
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.(Stairwells
are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
>
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,
ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target)
4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a
vital organ.
RUN!
>
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It
may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was
a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the
sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a
limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his
vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim
>
9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend
heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she
called the police because it was late and she thought it was
weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the
door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had
crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl
to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already
have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."
He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry
recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking
that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified
it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear
baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at
night. Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a
crying baby.

This e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the
Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this
past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in
Louisiana.

April 2004

I'm so sorry that this news is so late! It seems that I am running backwards now days but will try to do better on the May news. That is, IF, people will write and let me know some. I do have some great news about a wedding coming up in June and a visit to Czechoslovakia by a family member. Plus we will be reporting on a new grandbaby for MariAnn. Possibly a new grandbaby for Renee and Darren, it may have already been born but I haven't been told. That will be in the May newsletter. So stay tuned for the next issue!

The daughter of Janie Smith, wife of David, Laurie Day, is in the hospital in Austin. She is fighting a real battle with cancer. Laurie is in her early 40's. She had breast cancer a few years ago and thought her battle was over. This year she was diagnosed with tumors in her head which were inoperable. They have tried radiation and chemotherapy but that hasn't really helped as now the cancer cells are in her spinal column. They are still trying different types of chemo and we are PRAYING that will help. Please remember them in your prayers! Laurie has a husband, a son who is 20 and a daughter who will be 9 later this year.

Congratulations are in order! On April 13, 2004, Scott Anderson and wife, Misty, had a baby girl. Cheyenne Nicole Anderson was born and she weighed 6'13" and was 19" long. I know they are so happy to have her. Baby and mom are doing well, of course, Scott is on Cloud 9!

We had a wonderful visit this past Friday and Saturday from MariAnn and Mona. We were expecting MariAnn but they surprised us by Mona flying into Houston from NC and riding with MariAnn to Odessa. Boy, what a surprise!!!!! We had a wonderful visit, way too short but great anyway. They left at 6:15 a.m. om Sunday to get back to Houston for Mona to catch her flight back to NC. What they had tried to do was to get all of the siblings to be here at the same time. Of course, with work schedules, kids schedules and so forth, that wasn't possible. Wouldn't that have been great though? Have you ever not recognized one of your own kids? That did happen to me, as the girls decided to pull a prank on me. When MariAnn arrived, Mona stayed in the car for about 15 minutes. Then she got out and brought a plant, gardenia, to the door. She had pulled up her collar and had a floppy hat pulled down around her face. Anyway, when I went to the door I thought that someone had sent flowers to Mother and delivered them to our house. She had the plant right in front of her face and when I took it she said, "flower delivery for Ann Noble." I said, "who in the world is sending me flowers?" She handed me the plant and kept standing there. I thought, "why is she still here?" Am I supposed to say or do something else?" Then when she realized I hadn't a clue, she pulled off the hat and I went into shock, to know I hadn't ever recognized my own daughter. They really pulled off a big surprize on me! What a laugh everyone, including me, had!

Sue McElyea was in the hospital again with heart problems. They released her and suggested they call Hospice to help out for awhile. She and the family are in our prayers.

An update from Dave on Syrina: Following the tests on Syrina's heart, the doctor stated she could find nothing wrong. Thank God for that!

Arvilla and Justin were in an accident which totaled their van. At the time of this writing the owner of the donkey who caused the wreck is unknown. Charges will be filed against him as soon as he is known for failure to keep his animals contained. Thankfully, other than aches and pains Arviall nor Justin suffered injury.

For those of you who have had to put a relative in a nursing home, my sympathies go out to you. After Mothers stay in the hospital, she was released to Sienna Care Center. I think the date was the 22nd of April. We are all having a very hard time coping with the decision that was made for us actually, by her doctor. Please pray for her to improve so that she can return home to live what time she has left in her home! We all agree that this is the hardest, worst thing any of us has had to face. I guess we all have expected her to stay the same and still continue to be around forever. Plus be the same person we remember from our childhood! Isn't it strange the way life throws us these curves when we least expect them?

From Bonnie Pope Toliver:

3/27 - As some of you know, I have been sick quite a lot lately. I had pulmonary tests done, & I got the results back yesterday. I found out that I have something called COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It is similar to emphysema or chronic bronchitis. It is most common in smoker's but since I have never smoked, it could have been caused by breathing second-hand smoke when I was a child, or breathing the insecticides sprayed on the crops where we lived. People who work with hazardous chemicals often get it. The doctor prescribed an inhaler, & recommended that I do breathing treatments twice a day. It is not very advanced at this time, but is incurable, & could get worse over time. Please pray that the treatments will help, & that it will not get worse. Thank you for your prayers. Bonnie P.S. Eons ago when I was a child, the hazards of smoking were not known. If the people in my life had known, I am sure they would not have endangered my health or their own.

From Judy Finley:

3/26 - Terry just called me........she's celebrating her
five-years-cancer-free tomorrow,but.......she had a mammogram earlier
this week, and was called back for a whole spate of X-rays. Something
doesn't look the same as it did the last time she had a mammogram, so
she is seeing a surgeon next week. They will send tissue in for a
biopsy. She is trying to be positive about this and not to worry, but I
know she is scared anyway.

From Dave Smith:

3/25 - Kim is home from the Hospital, she had a hysterectomy on Monday and I went and picked her up on Wednesday she is doing fine just a little pain. We take Syrina to the heart Doctor April 12 in Austin, so we will know what is going on with her then.

Congratulations to all! Please let me know if I missed any May birthdays or anniversaries, if so, it was not intentional and I will add to the next newsletter.

March 2004

Due to an oversight, I was embarrassed to see that I had missed two anniversaries and a birthday, for the March Calendar. Please add to your calendar, if you are keeping one, the anniversary of Trey and Christina Yaroz Garcia, March 4, and also the anniversary of Calvin and Sue Holland McElyea, March 14. Trena Danille McElyea, adopted daughter of Daymon, celebrated her birthday on March 3.I am very sorry that these two anniversaries and birthday slipped by me. Please forgive the oversight!

***

On November 11, 2003, Amber Schumate, daughter of Tammy Walker Henderson and Steve Schumate, was married in Odessa. Amber married Billy Jack Roe also of Odessa. I am sorry for the oversight about this marriage but I didn't have the information until today. Best wishes on their marriage! Thanks to Aunt Wanda Mitchell for providing the information.

This picture of Adam and Jonathan Finley was received after the last mailing.

Jonathan is a real doll, isn't he!

***

The following info was received from Arvilla Mitchell:

Kayla Mitchell was accompanied by her great-grandfather, Francis, to a Girl Scout Father and Daughter Dinner/Dance. She wa really cute in her formal and Francis looked quite handsome all dressed up in his suit. They enjoyed their time there but left early as Kayla didn't like the loud music. Seems as Francis didn't either because he developed a headache. Kayla is the daughter of Paula McLemore,granddaughter of Arvilla Mitchell and great granddaughter of Francis and Wanda McElyea Mitchell. Kayla received her girl scout pin last Friday night. She was so excited she is a scout officially.

***

Paula is home schooling Paige, DeWayne and Kayla now. All three kids are doing pretty well. Since the kids are home schooled, we try to go on a field trip once a month. We went to the Audie Murphy Cotton Museum in Greenville and the kids loved it. They learned how cotton was ginned. We saw stuff on Monte Stratton and Audie Murphy also a mini doll house and stuff on the presidents. We are going to arrange a tour of a cellophane co and candy co in Farmersville this month or next.

Melody is here with us since Saturday and she will be leaving tomorrow or Thursday. We have really enjoyed her visit and they have played a lot. Kayla and Paige have really enjoyed having her here. Justin is also here visiting during his Spring Break. DeWayne and he have been really enjoying each others company. They have been playing a lot of video games on the computer. Justin and Daddy were going to level the house but it is too cool and muddy under there. I will have to go back to the knee Dr. next week as i am having a lot of pain. More than likely, I will probably have to have more shots.

***

Dawn and Kaven Mitchell have a new granddaughter named Madison Grace Lindsey. Dawn's daughter gave birth to her on the 5th of March. They have three granddaughters now .
Kaven will be able to drive a Nascar car for ten laps. This will be during the week of the Nascar races at the Texas Motor Speedway between Ft. Worth and Denton. We don't know which car yet.

***

Chris Mitchell, son of Steve and Heidi is now stationed in San Angelo. Being closer doesn't seem to make it easier to visit!

***

Violet Walker, Randy and Vivian McElyea were traveling together to Electra, TX. They were going there to take Stormy, Violet's granddaughter, her car. Stormy has moved to Electra and was unable to take the car during the move. When they left Odessa, we were having some pretty high winds. The farther east and north they traveled, the worse the weather became. According to Vivian, they got to three different towns just shortly after tornados had touched down. She said it was kind of scary but more exciting, especially since they escaped any damage. She said the weather during the trip was really bad until they started back home and it was okay then. So glad they weren't hurt or anything.

***

Seems as if since all families have moved away from the starting origin, Snyder or Odessa, kin can live in the same town and not know it. Such is the case with Kathy McElyea Prichard's daughter, Halei, and John and Rhenae McElyea Viner's daughter, Natalie. Both live in or around Denton and have no idea each other is in the same vicinity. What a shame!

Tidbits!

While talking to Daymon, I mentioned that Randy and Vivian are awaiting the arrival of their first great grandchild. He said don't say that as it made him feel old. So, I said well, what if I told you I have 5 great grandkids and 2 on the way. He said that wouldn't make him feel older but the reason Randy and Vivian's great would was because he used to remember bedeviling them before they married. Donny and Daymon used to hide in the back of Randy's car before he and Vivian went on a date. A couple of times they pulled it off for a little bit before they were caught. Fond memories!

While visiting with Mother this weekend, she and I were talking about Grandmother. She related a story about Grandmother as she got older complaining about the newspaper print being smaller. Grandmother would say, "I don't see why the newspaper has started using such small type. I used to could read the paper with no problems and now I need to use glasses." Mother would tell her that it wasn't the print but her eyes, somehow, I think she never quite beleived that. Now, I am facing the same thing, like everything else they seem to be making newsprint, labels and just about everything else smaller.

***

Mother (Vernice) is doing as well as expected. She has her good days and bad days. She is almost bedridden as it is just too painful for her to be up and about. Her arthritis has just about taken its toll on her. I know she would enjoy hearing for any of you who have the time to send a card or write. She is very lonely and has very little company. She is unable to use her computer at this time because of the doctor doing some kind of procedure on her wrist to try and help her carpal tunnel syndrome. If you don't have her address or phone number please let me know and I will provide it.

***

From San Antonio:

Sharon Viner has been back in the hospital recently. One of her stints had collapsed so they went into to reopen them. During the procedure they found one of her arteries had a puncture, they had to cauterize that. She is home and doing well now. She said she had talked to Bill, Jr. and contrary to what I reported in last months news, Bill and Sheryl aren't leaving Arkansas to move back to Texas.

Allen and Valerie are really enjoying California. Both of them were transferred to California by the companies for which they work. Allen was promoted as well as being trasferred. He is now the Assistant Director of Corporate Security for the company where he works.

Daymon and Maureen McElyea were in Reno, Nevada recently for Daymon to participate in the National Bowling Tournament. I asked how he did, his response was, "I showed up." He said it is very hard to make any kind of standing in a national tournament. But, it is fun to try.

Before returning home to San Antonio, Daymon, Maureen and another couple drove into California. The drove up the Pacific Coast highway to Big Trees National Forest. There they saw trees 400 to 500' tall and as big around as a house. They also went to Burney Falls and the Napa Valley. They even saw a live but not active volcano. He said it was a trip they would never forget! Sounds great!

Last year brought them two new grandchildren, I'll include more about them in the next newsletter if possible. Daymon is facing back surgery this coming summer to repair two herniated disks.

Marlene's brother, Glenn Foley, passed away in December. Even though the time is past, I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to Maureen for her loss.

News about the Noble family

Mona and Don Tharp are preparing their home in North Carolina for a move to Virginia. Seems that the military subscribes to the old saying about "a rolling stone gathers no moss". They don't get to stay in one place very long, just long enough to start to get used to the place and then move on. I don't envy them the preparation for the move, trying to sell the house and etc. Although at times a change is good, pray this will be so for them.

MariAnn is doing well. We are looking forward to another most welcome visit in April. It is always such a pleasure when any of our kids have the time to visit.

Liz and Leon left yesterday, the 20th, for a weekend visit to his parents in Tennessee. Pray for a safe trip for them.

Phyllis has been recently hospitalized in Pasadena. She is at home and doing much better. This recent hospitalization is related to her injury in 1983. That is when she was in an accident and thrown out of the back of a pickup. She will always have problems stemming from that injury.

Allie has gotten another job. She is doing well. She had been laid off for a few months and is glad to be back at work. She is looking forward to the birth of Nicole's second baby.

Darren, Renee and Stephanie are doing well. His new business seems to be up and running. He says it is doing much better than he had hoped for a new business. Stephanie is probably in Washington, D.C. this week or when Spring Break is at her school. I talked to Joshua a week or so ago and he is doing well. I can't beleive he is 16 now. They seem to grow up so fast. He sounds so much like Darren on the phone it is haunting. He had hoped to be going to Australia this summer but the lack of funds it preventing that. Perhaps next year!

Madaleine, Tom and Austin are doing well. They are going to Ruidoso next weekend. Angela and I have been invited but am not sure if I feel like the trip. It is always nice to get away and see new scenery. Austin has really been enjoying being outdoors. He has already been able to use his wading pool and loves it. He really keeps us on our toes as he never slows down.

Angela and I are staying really busy preparing for her 15th year class reunion. She is the Chairperson and I am her helper. So far it appears that it will be a fair turnout. They are all really excited about it. Of course, coinciding with the 15th year reunion is the filming of the movie, "Friday Night Lights" here in Odessa. In case you don't know, this movie is taken from the book, "Friday Night Lights", which was written about the 1988 football season at Permian. Of course, that is the graduating class of 1989. A lot of her classmates are involved with the filming and one of the boys is even getting to play an assistant coach in it. The film crew has been her in Odessa for the whole month of March. Billy Bob Thorton, Tim McGraw and yes, even Faith Hill have been here. Tim McGraw is in the movie as well as Billy Bob, Faith Hill is NOT. Of course, we haven't gotten to see any of the stars as they are keeping pretty secluded from the public. Darn! We have been able to see some of the filming though and that has been neat. They are also filming in Austin and Houston. The film is scheduled for release October 15, 2004.

All of our kids seem to have such interesting lives and Clinton and I are just along for the ride it seems. He is having a lot of problems with his arthritis now days and doesn't get out very often. So, you now know all about us. As far as I know all grandkids and greats are doing well. Grandson Joey and his intended are looking forward to the birth of their daughter in May. Trey, Christina, and Maverick are well. Mindy is doing well in Colorado, still trying to figure out what she wants to do or be when she grows up. Must take after her Grandma as I am still trying to figure that out at 65! Doug and Sara are doing well. Don't hear from Nicole or Chance but presume as is well. Leon, Jr. and Jennifer are doing well. Daughter Allison just celebrated her 4th birthday.

***

After being chastised by someone about always making the newsletter or family letters so upbeat, I have tried to think why that may be. I am sure that all of you that I write realizes that my life is no more perfect than anyone else's. I have my aches and pains, money doesn't grow on our trees, our kids, grandkids and great grandkids aren't perfect. But, since I know you all probably have your share of troubles, I want to make your day a little brighter and so I try to write uplifting letters. Guess my family who lives near and other places does see my negative side more than I wish. I am sending this next story to try and explain why I try to make everyone's day a bit brighter. I love this story! And for those who do see my negative side more than I want you too, please forgive me and realize, I may be very tired, not feel well or just down in the dumps. I will try harder to show my more positive side.

***

A great note for all to read it will take just 37 seconds to read this and change your thinking.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man couldn't hear the band - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Epilogue:
There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.

Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

"Today is a gift, that's why it is called the present."

February 2004

Earlier this month, we had an impromptu "family reunion". Steve, Heidi, Tyler and Melody stopped over in Odessa to spend the night with Randy and Vivian. They were on their way to California for Chris' graduation. Several of us met at, "Big Daddy's Catfish Place" to share a meal. Those attending were: Violet, Tammy, Stormy and her children, Jessica and Gregory, Randy, Vivian, Raye Vern, Ring, Misty and her son, Cooper, Steve, Heidi, Tyler, Melody, Angela and myself. We had a great time and after the meal several of us went to Randy and Vivian's to view old family movies Steve had brought with him. What a wonderful time! I am glad to report that Steve and family got to California and back safe and sound.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday afternoon I attended a baby shower honoring Laurie Harguess, wife of Dillon. They are expecting in April. She had a very nice shower, receiving lots of nice gifts for the baby. Great grandmother, Vivian McElyea, along with a great aunt of the yet unborn baby boy, presented them with a beautiful bassinet. Vivian also had made a beautiful baby quilt for the baby. Congratulations and best wishes to all!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From Texas to New York to California! Next stop for the Allen Viner family? The last I had heard from Allen and Valerie they were living in New York, but Valerie was transferred to California so now instead of cold weather they can enjoy the California sunshine. Looking forward to an update! Also heard that Bill and Sheryl are moving back to Texas from Arkansas. Welcome back to Texas!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Misty Bell Hunley is practicing for a new play. She will be appearing in, "Harvey" at the "Permian Playhouse". The play opens sometime early in March, so if anyone reading this is in the area perhaps you would want to attend. Misty will be playing the nurse in the psychiatric ward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good news to report about mother! The doctors had been concerned that she might have cancer. Due to further testing it seems no cancer is evident in her body! She was told that perhaps her doctor should try to reduce some of the medications she is taking as that might be part of her problem. We are so thankful!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In talking with daughter, Mona, today, I found that some bosses do have a heart. Mona and Don's daughter, Mindy, is attending college away from home for the first time. Mona's boss paid for a round time airfare for Mindy to come home to N.C. from CO. for Valentine's Day! It was a big surprise for Mona, who is suffering from the Empty Nest Syndrome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Calvin and Sue McElyea are suffering from the effects of the flu. Pray that they will both soon be feeling well again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Remember the daughter of Janie Smith, wife of David, in your prayers. Laurie Day had surgery for breast cancer and is now battling some tumors in her head. They aren't sure if they are malignant or not. They are too large for surgery so they are treating with chemo or radiation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

School and College honors! Holly McElyea was named to the President's Honor Roll at UTPB. Students who have acheived a 4.0 grade point average are listed on the Presidents Honor Roll. Congratulations, Holly!

Other school honors are: Justin Mitchell once again made the Honor Roll. Chris Mitchell will be graduating from his linguistics training in California. After graduation, Chris will be stationed at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo for 4 months before shipping out to Korea.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Terry McElyea Gaines writes that she and sis, Judy Finley, will be in the Odessa/Midland area in April. They will be attending once again the, "Stream in the Desert" series and lectureship hosted by Golf Course Road Church of Christ. If anyone wants information on that, let me know and I will find out more. As of Jan. 28, Terry is recovering from the crud, as she puts it. I think most everyone in Texas has or has had it.
Ways to reduce stress and be happier!
1. Every day, do something that reaffirms the beauty and joy of living. Whether you take a walk, work in your garden, sit with your kids in the park, enjoy your favorite music, or simply watch the birds in your yard, allow yourself to remember that there is great beauty all around us.
2. Do something positive. Give blood. Send money if you can to a worthy cause. Volunteer in your community. Your act of volunteerism will help build a stronger community, which helps everyone.
3. Turn off the television and radio news. Constant exposure to the news can create anxiety, fear and rage. Defuse negative feelings by watching favorite movies on videotape or taking the whole family out to do something fun and life-affirming.
4. Get to know your neighbors. Get out of your house, meet those you don't already know, and talk to those you do. Building a sense of camaraderie will help you feel safe among those with whom you live. And simply talking will help you reduce your anxieties and feel better about life as a whole. Make a tray of lasagne for a neighbor you've never met. Invite a new neighbor to your church or synagogue. Take a walk with a neighbor who might enjoy the outdoors.
5. Laugh. Studies show that laughter is one of the best ways of letting negative emotions out without causing harm. Also, laughter reduces anxiety, depression and fear. Take your funniest friend to lunch. Go see a funny movie or a comedy show. Play with your kids or your dogs or cats. Anything that makes you laugh is worthwhile. As Monty Python alumnus Eric Idle, author of "The Road to Mars" (Alfred Knopf, 2000), so eloquently puts it, "Levity is the opposite of gravity."
6. Start and end the day on a positive note. Instead of turning first to the newspaper headlines or the TV news, start with a prayer or a song. Or, try lighting a candle and reminding yourself that there is more good than evil in the world.
7. Don't allow anger and rage to rule your life. Misdirected anger can only hurt others as well as yourself. Find ways to vent that don't hurt anybody -- exercise, meditate, write your emotions down in a daily journal, paint, make music. And, if you still can't cope, seek professional assistance.
8. Before you get out of bed in the morning, think of something that makes you smile. Whether it's the birth of your children, the first time you brought home your new puppy, the way your partner's hair lies on the pillow, or anything else smiley, a smile first thing in the morning reminds you to look for joy all day. Additionally, studies show that a simple smile can enhance your immune system and improve your resistance to stress.
9. Be forgiving. Our capacity for forgiveness strengthens our relationships and helps us heal and move forward.
10. Nurture your family spirit. Now, more than ever, everyone needs to feel loved. In actions and words, tell your family members -- those near, those far, those who are not your family by birth but by choice -- that you love them above all else. Let your heart speak even when your mind is at a loss for words.
January 2004
Hopefully this month hasn't been as uneventful as it seems as far as news goes! Other than a few illnesses, medical concerns and etc., I have little to report.
I did talk with Darrell McElyea and did find that yes, Holly, is planning on marrying this summer. No date has been set! So, I want to wish she and her intended happy planning.
Madaleine has been busy painting and revamping our living room. We will start on the kitchen as soon as possible. So far, it is looking very nice.
Have talked to all but one of our kids and most grandkids. All are doing well. Mindy has started college in Colorado. So, Mona and Don are empty nesters. They will probably be moving to Virginia from North Carolina by summer. Military life!
Aunt Violet got a new Chevy Impala. We took up payments on Madaleine and Tom's Expedition. They got a Chevy Trail Blazer. Now, if the gas prices don't continue to rise, perhaps we can take a trip.
Please keep Mother in your prayers as she is having more tests done. She has gone to an internist who seems to think she may have something more serious than her previous doctors. Also include in those prayers, Laurie Morris Day, daughter of Janie Smith. Laurie has undergone treatment for breast cancer in the last couple of years. Now, they have found tumors in her head. They seem to think that removal would be not in her best interest so they will be doing radiation or chemotherapy. I don't remember which.
For all of you who are not feeling well, I wish you good health. If you want me to continue sending this out, PLEASE, send me some news or something to share with the family.
