Political control over the rich soil and great lands in the central Mexico fell into confusion after 1100 A.D. Gradually the Aztecs migrated to the vally and occupied a minor town on the shore of the great central lake. They valued the skills of warriors above all, and this emphasis gave them an advantage against rival tribes around them. The Aztecs controlled all of central Mexico as a military empire by the end of the 15th century. The Aztec Empire invented little of there own things because most of there things drew from the experiences of the people before them. They had an advanced agriculture that supported a very large population. Their agriculture mainly consisted of corn. The Aztecs build emmense buildings with great design and flourished in many arts. They were edept metal workers, but had no iron. The wheel was not used because they lacked suitable draft animals. One of the most distinctive features of the Aztec culture was its penchant for sacrifice. The Aztec myths dectated thanks human blood was needed to give the sun the strength to rise each day. Sacrificing several thousand in a single day was not uncommon. Victims were often decapitated or flayed, and then hearts where cut from living people. The Sacrificing was done on top of huge pyramids to be close to the sun. Their civilzation was brought to an abrupt end by the arrival of the Spanish in the early 16th Century. At first the Aztecs believed the Spanish people where sent by there gods. (There monks predicted the Gods would return that very year) European diseases devastated the Aztecs because they were exposed to new bacteria and viruses. The Aztecs could have easily defeated the Spanish army if it was not for the disease. A They fell to a small Spanish army with steel weapons, firearms, a few horses, and some small cannons. The cruelty of the Aztecs also worked against them, because it was easy for the Spanish to make allies against them. |
