Windows 98 PPTP 128 Bit Encryption Setup


This page describes how to set up Windows 98 as a client machine to connect to a PPTP server with 128 bit encryption.  This is useful for connecting to a work network from a DSL/cable modem.

Steps:

  1. Open "Control Panel"
  2. Double click on Add/Remove Programs
  3. Click on "Windows Setup" tab
  4. Double click on "Communications"
  5. Check the "Dial-Up Networking" and "Virtual Private Networking" boxes
  6. Close all of this
  7. Reboot
  8. Download this update
  9. RENAME THIS FILE FROM *.zip TO *.exe
  10. Install this file by double clicking on it
  11. Reboot
  12. Double click on "My Computer"
  13. Double click on "Dial-Up Networking"
  14. Double click on "Make New Connection"
  15. Enter the connection name and select "Microsoft VPN Adapter" as a device
  16. Enter the IP address, finish
  17. Double click on the connection in "Dial-Up Networking"
  18. Enter your userid and password, things should connect
