JEAN was probably named after her mother JEAN nee DIXON. All nine known children were still at home in 1800 and Jean was presumably the daughter aged 10-16.ADAM McKEE's will tells us that by 1807 she had married a LINDSEY. "Abbeville Marriages" (reconstructed) says married 1805 to "--- LINDSEY". Adam's will confirms that surname for her The book may have just picked up will but gives no basis for the 1805 marriage date. According to the courthouse mar.record custodian all records that early were destroyed.
There were three Lindsey families on the 1800 census, two of them McKee neighbors.
Using the GRS transcript these were
John Lindsey
p14 per GRS transcript 00011-00001-02
John Lindsey p15 (same page as Adam McKee) 00010-21010-01
Samuel Lindsey p6 00110-01101-00
On my transcription I noted further that the John Lindsey on the page with Adam resided right next to the Breckinridges so quite clearly they would have all known each other..
In researching Lindsey estate records (not comprehensive but including examination of sales, etc. with an eye open for that surname between roughly 1810-25) I came across the will of Thomas Lindsay (written 5/25/1820 & probated 12/7/1821; Abbeville). Thomas left a widow named Grizel which definitely got my attention. Thomas & Grizel had five children -- James, John, Grizel, Joseph & Polly. RootsWeb postings for Abbeville include three Lindsay Family Bibles on Thomas Sr. and two of his sons According to the transcript Thomas Lindsay died 12/15/1821 (strange that his will was probated a week before he died??). His oldest son was born in 1793 so its safe to assume Jean did NOT marry a son of Thomas Lindsay Sr. From birth dates of children its likely that his wife Grizzel was born during the 1770s. According to the bible transcription, the children were all born in SC. It does not say when they settled in Abbeville but some of the children later went to Mississippi. Thomas was not found on on the 1800C transcript for Abbeville Co .
The greatest likelihood is that Jean McKee either married the son of Samuel Lindsey or else the John Lindsey next to James Breckenridge became a widower between 1800-05 and married her Samuel's son would have been in the same age bracket we presume for her but it was not at all uncommon for widowers to select bride's a decade or two younger than themselves. Perhaps the 1810 census will provide additional clues as to which Lindsey Jean married and further search of Lindsey estate records or other available sources might tell us more.
