Sarah's scream!
........ "Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!"
How intense the filming of Scream 2 was.
........"When you do your big scenes, it's incredibly intense on that movie. It's just great that phone voice. Oh my God and they keep you away I did not meet the guy that does the phone voice until the end of the movie. They keep him away from you, which absolutely heightens the levels 'cause I haven't..I see this guy in the mask. So when you get to those scenes they're horrifying but, the difference, and I try to stress "I Know You Did..." is not Scream. Scream has a lighter, almost a farcical side "I Know What You Did..." does not. So when you get to that part of it it becomes a little more jovial, a little lighter, you know..."
Secrecy around the script of Scream 2.
........"Every page was put with the identification number and so whenever you had changes you had to give them your paper to trade with a new one so you didn't throw it in the garbage..."
How did you feel about being in a sequel? (Scream 2)
........"I had the biggest apprehensions, let's be honest. How many sequels are really as good or better than the first? Let me tell you something...I think this one has the chance of actually being better than the first one. Scream was groundbreaking...it was new...there was nothing like it. What we were able to do was to take what worked and run with it...and cut put the stuff that didn't work although there was very little honestly that didn't work. This has the chance I think of being bigger than the first one and the cast...it's just...every time you turn around, aside from, you know, Neve and Courtney and David and Jamie, you know because of the first one, you have Jada Pinkett, Jerry O'Connell, ummm, Heather Graham, Rebekah Gayheart, Louis Arquette, Laurie Metcalf, Tim Olyphant, Elise Neal...it just goes on...Omar Epps...I mean every time I turned around they were adding somebody else...it was just, I mean, this electric, you know, cast...it's gonna be really good..."

How did Kevin make I Know What You Did Last Summer work?
........"You know what? I wish I knew what it was that he did because then I'd be the greatest actor going because, if I could follow the things the ways he got us there, but my problem is once I do a scene I literally have amnesia. I'm blank. I don't remember if I said my lines what happened but he would get you this level where he'd talk us through them he'd make you feel these things it was horrifying not to mention the fact that we were such a close cast. We were four of us, in this small town in North Carolina, for two and a half months with noone else but ourselves so if you're watching a scene and there's someone else in it and they're getting hurt, it's very hard in your mind to differentiate between Ryan and Barry, Freddy and Ray, or Love and Julie, (gulps a breath of air) because all I see is I see Ryan getting hurt, I see Freddy and, it plays really weird tricks on your mind, that...the blur, it becomes a real blur, the line between reality and fiction."
Sarah's feelings about the hook.
........"We used a real hook that thing was very sharp, and it was shiny, and it was heavy, and it scared me!"
Sarah's character, and the dress she wore in ...Last Summer.
........"I was self-concious about the outfits I kept trying to convince them it should be an evening gown competition and not a bathing suit competition and...I tried to get them to let her wear pants and not jeanshorts and..but that was my character and part of what again I had to understand that this is who my character was, and I had to go with it and it took alot of coaxing from Jim to get me into those outfits, especially the dress, the black and white, the black cut-out dress it took some...some coaxing, um, from my part, I, I was...it took me awhile to say yes to them."
Your character's cleavage is hard to ignore. Were you comfortable with that image?
........"Let's be honest, this is entertainment, and what what, you know, this...movies are entertainment, and that's part of what draws people in. You know, if we're attractive to look at and people like our short skirts and that was my character also we have to understand, and that's the way it goes that was my character what she thought her attributes were. She didn't know she had anything else to give so she gives what she thinks people expect of her."
Kevin's movies are so real and scary, and they really keep you jumping.
"Well I think that's what Kevin's genius is is now, you know, I think towards the late 70's early 80's, horror became almost comic. It was comical it was funny it was the big-breasted girl and you knew as soon as she got naked she was going to get it, and there was lots of decapitation and, you know, body parts being severed and, that's not scary it's..it's funny. And I think what Kevin's done is he's made it scary again because he hit you where it hurts. He makes you scared up here, (taps her head) and that's what scares us because it's things that could actually happen, and then what he does is you have something funny and you get totally confused and you get thrown off track and you're laughing and then all of a sudden boom, you get scared again, and then there's, a touching moment, something that, you might relate to, that you might understand or might have happened to you, and then boom you get scared again and that's what makes the movies work, and especially this one I think."
Kevin's really big on the 'slasher/horror' genre, isn't he?

With these movies behind you now, are you afraid of being stuck in horror movies?
........"You know what? I took these movies because they offered me the most, the best opportunities as a young actress. Being, you know I'm 20 years old I play high school or college, there aren't that many good roles, 3-dimensional characters. Most of the time teenagers are caricatures they're steriotypical and they're uninteresting. These movies not only offered me characters that were so diverse and had so many different levels to them, they offered me the opportunity to do drama, to do horror, to do action, to do comedy. That's an actor's dream. So, if this is typcasting, you know, God help me I guess, uh, you know, I should be so lucky. When I got off the soap I got offered all these, you know 'women in jeopardy' I call them "disease of the week" movies. You know 'and this girl gets raped by her boyfriend' and 'this girl's the victim of this' and 'this one's the victim of this', and that's the plot, yeah. I played 3 strong female characters, role models you know. These are not, the characters of the 80's now and I think that, with people like Claire Danes and Neve Campbell and the rest of us out there (gulps air) really showing that we're..our capability is so much more than (people?) give us credit for..."
Sarah's love for horror movies.
"I love horror I love being scared I love thrillers, (background noise, various clips of screaming from horror movies) and I think it's so rare that things actually scare you."
Why we love horror movies.
........"If we're doing genre horror movies, many reasons, it's an adrenalin high, it's a great, safe place to be scared, and it's a great reason on a Friday night to go out on a date and cuddle up and be scared."
The horror movie genre in the 70's.
(????)"..genre in the late 70's early 80's, it was a different genre, it was big-breasted woman running from the bad man in the woods..."
........"Basically it really has nothing to do with the original movie, all that is the same is we took the idea of the character. His visions for Buffy was not what the movie was. He wanted something a little darker, a little more on edge, a little less camp, and I can't stress enough how interesting it is. There you have this idea that horror, I mean.. the scariest things in life, are things that are based in reality. What scares you is things that could possibly happen. What's scarier than high school? Nothing."
Buffy reminds us of another darkly funny movie...Heathers. Are you a fan?
........"I know that movie by heart. (laughs) I know every word of that movie."
Is Wynona Ryder's character similar to Buffy Summers?
........ "Yes and no. I think Winona's character was in the middle of the popular group and was realizing things were wrong, whereas Buffy really is an outsider. She really watched everything from more of an outside eye."
Slaying vampires is tough work. How do you stay in shape?
........"I took tae kwon do for 5 years, and now I'm taking kick-boxing boxing and streetfighting and gymnastics."
Are vampires sexy?
........"Ohh absolutely. Abso - abso - absolutely."
How Sarah feels about being so well known as 'Buffy"
........"It's a blessing and it's a curse. Let's be honest, if it wasn't for my show I would not have the film career, probably, that I have, it's, you know, the easiest transition these days is people wanting television and films. On the other hand, especially, more so this year, you feel that there's a wall because you are recognizable as your..as, not just your character but as your personna. And then people sort of see you as this way and sometimes you really have to work against your type, you have to convince people, that you are this different person. It happened on both these movies I did this summer, when I went in for Cruel Intentions they kept thinking, "She's never gonna say these things, there's no way these words are going to come out of Buffy's mouth" and the director of this movie and his children were big Buffy fans, and it's like, Buffy's just not right for this thing, but I'm, I'm not...???? just plusses and minuses like any job..."

Ok then, who's sexier, Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt?
........"Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm Brad, oh Antonio Banderas. (hahahahahaha) Can I answer it that way? It's too hard to choose between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, that's really hard. I took the cop-out way. Antonio Banderas was the underground guy. I just saw him in Evita, and thought he was amazing."
What's next on Buffy?
........"Oh, Buffy is so good this season. What we've really realized what worked was the relationships between the characters, and we're going to follow alot more of that and the demons are going to become more fodder for the storyline they're just basically going to further, these relationships. The Buffy and Angel relationship is going to go to way, way, higher levels and really follow that, you know now that Buffy knows that Xander is in love with her it changes the dynamic of the friendship and we'll follow what it's like when, he falls in love with somebody else and how she handles that, how Willow handles the fact that she's never going to, you know, have him, now that Cordelia's part of the mix how does she fit in and we're really going to follow the lives (gulps air) and go through more of the teen-age years with them, it's actually really exciting. I think last year the WB didn't know what to expect from our show it's a little wary of some of our storylines and plots, and I think because they realize that they just need to let us go with it they're really giving us some places to go. We have some wonderful episodes."

Sarah's real-life cooking
........"I'm a different kind of cook. I didn't cook that much, until two years ago until really when I started living on my own because my mother was a good cook, and I have a...very large sized pool so I have alot of barbeques at my house, we cook alot of fish and steak but we've started to make, the sauce is from scratch umm, I love to make soups. I love to make soup on a Sunday night, then we'll bring it to work and we'll, we'll dole it out all week."
Casting of Sean Patrick Flannery
........"I had the role and I wanted to read with the guys it was very important to me, that everyone read together because just because somebody's a wonderful actor does not mean A: that we'll connect, or B: that we see the story the same way, and I..I think that it's, it's unfortunate if you don't get the chance to do that, and we read all these guys, and we read the scenes that think about sex 328, you know, times a day, and, it's gone through many changes since then it's, it's not the scene that it is now, and I had the last line in the original one, and uh, I would look at them at the end, of the script, and all the guys would blush, and, you know, Sean came in later in the day, Sean came in, we did the scene, and Sean gave me a look back.. I must have turned purple. I was so flushed I was so flustered and, for the rest of the day, the director the producer everyone all they would tease me about was my reaction when Sean looked at me, and it was at that point that they were like, "Well, this is sort of done...this is sort of done" and that's, that's what it is, he was able to give me that feeling, we were able to get that with each other..."
Filming in New York
........"Shooting in New York is amazing and it's a blessing and it's an absolute curse. The blessing is you're actually in New York and there's no city like that. At night when the lights come up and the city's dark it is magical. And there's nothing like being on 5th Avenue, and seing Tiffany's, and being in (Vendel's ?) On the other hand, statistically it's a nightmare. You have people walking by constantly, it's unbelievably noisy. There's a horrible paparazzi problem in New York that, if Juliani (the mayor) doesn't do something about it I think you're going to see alot of movies stop shooting there and more and more are going to go to Canada. Everything's public in New York. So you'll be doing this scene and you'll have these paparazzi guys, that are just in your face, while you're trying to do a scene and that's something that you don't really see that much, out here and it does make it a little difficult. On the other hand, I can't imagine, pretending to be in Union Square Market and not actually being there. That may just also be because I'm a New Yorker."
Today's movies
........"God its very hard..I think it's very hard to make a movie these days because everybody wants something different, and I think it's very hard to judge a movie's worth by how well it does at the box office because, movies that touched me made me know that life is beautiful. That's the best movie I've ever seen. That's the best movie of the year...but it's never going to be, a number one movie and there's going to be alot of people that are going to miss that, so I think it's hard, I think the american public, though, wants to be entertained they want things that are different. I think the reason Scream did so well was not because America was begging for the retelling of horror stories, but was because Kevin Williamson took this and made it different. He made it funny. He made fun of the whole turnabout...instead of running... how come every time they, you know, they run up the stairs instead of running out...and that's why it did so well and why maybe some of the new ones aren't doing as well as...they're missing it, they're missing the point of it. But I think everybody wants stuff, that's different."
How fame has changed her
........"I think your life changes overnight, but you don't have a chance to acclimate that quickly towards human beings...I've lived a certian way, 21 years of my life, or 20 years of my life and all of a sudden overnight, the rules are a little different. And it really scared me then. That was kind of a scary time. And because the young people were coming up, and, now, I'm comfortable, I won't say I'm comfortable with it but I'm more comfortable with it. Yes I still, you know, am vicious about my privacy and and, you know that's something I want to keep because I think it helps keep me a little bit grounded, but, you know getting recognized doesn't scare you if people are nice it's a pleasure it's very nice that someone takes the time to come up to you and, and give you a compliment about your work because it means that people are enjoying it. You have to learn how to seperate true fans from, (very low) other people."
TV MISC
What did you watch on tv when you were a little girl?
........"That's actually an interesting question, 'cause we've been talking about that a lot lately. You know, I realized, when people ask me about Buffy being a role model, and I started thinking and I'm, like, you know, when I grew up, I watched Mallory on Family Ties. All she cared about was who she dated, and how popular she was, and Jennifer was always never popular enough. I watched Blair on Facts of Life, Tootie, who always wanted to be, like, you know, popular and beautiful, and even Tracey Gold's character on Growing Pains hated being a nerd and was always made fun of because of it. There weren't these great role models that you have now on TV. You really have these strong female characters, and I think it's so great. I wish I had these shows when I was growing up."
The differences between a TV and a movie set
........"The time. You have so much time to do whatever you want. And you know what? Even in a film there's never enough time. On Buffy, we do an episode every eight days. We had -- we do an hour episode every eight days. We did a two-hour movie in two and a half months. Two months. You know, you have time to make things right and make things work, and it's wonderful. When we first got to the set, Love [costar Jennifer Love Hewitt] and Iwere like, you know, "Oh my God, we have two pages, what are we gonna do all day?" And you know what? It still wasn't enough time for me. I needed more time. Then I got back to the soap and the first day of work I was, I saw the nine pages and I went to [Buffy creator] Joss [Whedon] and went, "Nine pages? How am I ever gonna do nine pages in one day? This is ridiculous,I can't -- this is -- what are you asking of me?" And I called up John Callahan that night, who's still on All My Children and I said, like, "John, I can't do this, this is, you know, nine--" And he said very calmly, "Sarah, I have 35 tomorrow. I'm gonna have one take. I don't want to hear it." And I went, "OK, that's right. OK, I'm fine." Just remember where I came from, remember your roots."
Sarah's ordeal putting on make-up.
........"I always think I get places because of my brain and my intelligence and my talent, and I never think about my looks. It was such an ordeal for me to put makeup on today. Like I put on makeup on...looks like I'm a child hand-painting (Interviewer laughs...I don't think that's true. Just for the record.) No it really is. It it..it really is, literally. I'm a baseball hat and overalls girl on the weekend."
Sarah's first week on All My Children.
........ "...locked my little sister in the crypt burned my parents' divorce papers tried to seduce my step-father, uhh when he turned me down slept with the stable boy then cried rape and went to jail. It was a good first week."

Junior high school experiences.
........"...few people in the midwest,(go to private school, but) everyone in New York goes to private school, and, I was a nerd, I was very into my studies, I was not the most popular..I was sort of, punished for what I did, you know, "Do I go to a school dance party or do I go to an audition...?"
Sarah talks about Cruel Intentions, and talks about today's movies
........"It's a modernized "Dangerous Liasons" which is a story that no matter how many times you tell it is always different it's a story that's sort of, begs for retelling... It's going to be a little controversial. You know you talk about, part of what attracted me to both movies was, I think Hollywood has the tendancy to jump on a trend. "I Know What You Did..." and "Scream..and Scream 2" did very very well and all of a sudden there's all of these horror movies, well no it's time for something different. I mean both these movies that I did are very different. You don't see true romantic movies anymore. You just..they don't make them. I mean that's why..I think that was the beauty of "You've Got Mail" was it was just..these two people, but yet it still has that modern feel, because of the whole computer element, and you have teen movies but you don't have them as...???? it doesn't talk down...???? by any means gives them credit as being unbelievebly capable of some pretty dastardly things..."
Sarah's Emmys speech.
