OBITUARY OFMILES MERLE DEWEY |
"Son of Clifford Clarence Dewey and Nettie Eliza Backus" The dead body of Miles Merle Dewey , 39, wealthy Hickory Corner farmer was found by the crew of a north-bound interurban car on the Camp Custer-Monteith Junction line, lying besides the tracks near the third rail Saturday. The body was still warm when found and the man believed Dewey was still alive, though death came almost immediately afterwards. What the cause of death could have been, the first examination failed to show. There were no marks on the body to indicate that he had been struck by a car, or that he had been the victim of an attack by highwaymen. No burns could be found on the body. Mr. Dewey was identified by papers found in his pockets. The fact that $14.50 in money was found on his person removed the last suspicion that he might have been the victim of foul play. The body was brought to Van Halst undertaking rooms, and Mr. Dewey's family was notified of his death. From Mr. Dewey's nephew, John H. Jackson, who lives in Yorkville, it was learned that he had been in poor health for some time, and had consulted Kalamazoo physicians concerning his physical condition. One of those, Dr. Jackson, who was called by Deputy Borden, and stated that he had examined Mr. Dewey and found him to be suffering from nervous and mental trouble as well as from a less serious form of heart disease.Mr. Dewey's eldest son, Lovell, aged 17, was later reached by the officers, and said that when his father left home Saturday it was with the intention of going to the Graham Road about a mile east of Yorkville to take the interurban to Kalamazoo.Mr. Dewey is survived by his wife Mrs. Verna Dewey, two sons, Lovell aged 17, and Kenneth aged 9, and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Clifford Dewey all of Hickory Corners. The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock. Tuesday afternoon at his parents' home and the services will be conducted by Rev. Mr. Badder of Hickory Corners. Interment will be made in the Hickory Corners Cemetery. Coroner Wagar had decided that an inquest is necessary and has called it for 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the court house. Gilbert, at 909½ West Third Street, former city treasurer for six years, and a resident of Sioux City for thirty-four years, fell, struck the bed and died in three minutes. Death was the result of dropsy, of which Mr. Gilbert had been a sufferer for many years. During the last few months the action of his heart had been very weak, and the death, although sudden, was not entirely unexpected. Mr. Gilbert came to Sioux City in 1869 and was a clerk for Tootle and Charles. All the older residents of the city remember him either as a clerk for this firm or for James E. He continued in the grocery business until 1877, when he was elected city treasurer. Upon his retirement from the office of city treasurer in 1883 Mr. Gilbert continued in the service of the city as foreman of the sidewalk construction gangs. During the last three years, or since he first became affected by dropsy, Mr. Gilbert spent the most of his time at Upton, Mass., where Miss Florence Gilbert resides. He returned to Sioux City last fall. The other children are Irving G. Gilbert, of Boston, and Mrs. Russell Johnson, of Sioux City. Mrs. Gilbert also resides in Sioux City. The funeral will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Second Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Gilbert was a devoted member.
