THE NEXT GENERATION

LILLIAN

Lillian and Tommy with friend in Aberdeen

Lillian was the adventurer. A beautiful young woman with many suitors - including one chap who visited in his own aeroplane - landing in the fields near the house! On deciding after many jobs she wanted to be a nurse, the family laughed, saying she'd never be able to empty a bed-pan! At this, she threw herself into the career, quickly losing her Mirfield accent, and of course instead of becoming a mother, became matron of the famous King Edward VII hospital for officers in Windsor. Married lovely Scottish GP Thomas Jardine, she moved to Teynham in Kent, where they ran a private practice from their country home. Lillian visited her sisters as often as possible, and always sent us a very welcome box of apples for Christmas in those grim early post-war times.
