Australia Remembers

By Paul McCann

Johnny and I both walked to the church,
we held each others hand .
It was 1941 when our honeymoon was planned .
Then something happened to our world
and Johnny had to go ,
to fight a war instead of loving one who loved him so .
I never can forget the day my Johnny went away,
my heart was in my throat, I didn't know what I could say,
to help him through the hard times ,
and the things he might go through ,
but suddenly I said ,
" Australia loves you Johnny blue .
Australia remembers the love we hardly even knew .
Always remember darling Johnny when you're far away,
I will always love you right to your very dying day "
We wrote each other letters while the war was going on .
I told him how I prayed that soon
the war would all be gone ,
then just like that my prayers were answered ,
for good news had come .
The war was over!
Johnny's battle had been fought and won .
I met Johnny at the church and said ,
"God how I've missed you"
I fell into his open arms and he said ,
"I love you .
Do you remember before I left ,
all you said was true ,
Australia remembers our love ,
and I still remember you .
