More information on herbal remedies

Updated 2006

Being bipedal creatures for who knows how long, it should comes as no surprise to use that natural remedies like herbs have been used for hemorroid symptoms for a LONG time. This page will attempt to offer useful, timely information on herbal therapies :

  • What works and why ?
  • Where do you get these remedies ?
  • How safe are they ?
  • Comparing marketed products.

While awaiting the information forthcoming on this page, consider checking out :
Herb Research Foundation to familiarize yourself with herbs and their use in healing.

When reviewing these remedies keep in mind that appropriate treatment of hemorrhoids must take into consideration the GRADING of the hemorrhoid problem (inernal hemorrhoids graded on a scale of I to IV), and whether one is dealing with internal or external hemorrhoids. Most of the time these products will be used with Grades I, II and possibly III internal hemorrhoids.
Relative to the use of herbal and other INTERNAL remedies, one must look at the original product studies (if there are any for a particular remedy) to see IN WHAT CONTEXT the remedy was used when there are claims of success. Hemorrhoid Reviews is interested in providing that information. It will take some time.

Hemorrhoid Reviews has begun reviewing detailed information on a variety of herbal products. Note that some remedies have traditionally been applied to varicose vein therapy, but hemorrhoids appear to behave the same way and respond to similar treatments :

  • Butcher's Broom

Butcher's broom (ruscus aculeatus) is a European member of the lily family with stiff, pointed leaflike twigs, greenish white flowers and shiny red berries. Related to asparagus, its young tender shoots can be eaten. The name butcher's broom comes from its use as a broom in butcher's shops in Europe up until the 20th century.
Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Butcher's Broom in promoting hemorrhoid healing.
