Field and Staff

Stationed at Giesborough Point, District of Columbia, October 1863.
October 21. - Two battalions of the regiment under command of the Major [Asa] L. Gurney left Saratoga Springs, New York, the recruiting depot, en route for Washington, District of Columbia.
October 23. - They arrived.  They are now encamped at Giesborough Point, District of Columbia, the dismounted cavalry camp.  The Third Battalion is now nearly fitted at Saratoga Springs, New York, where it is rapidly recruiting under the direction of  Colonel [Morgan Henry] Chrysler.  Authorization to recruit this regiment was given to Colonel Chrysler July 20, 1863.

February 1. - Embarked on transports for New Orleans, Louisiana, from Giesborough Point, District of Columbia.
February 16. - Arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana.

    Headquarters of the regiment for the last two months has been at Morganza, Louisiana.  The regiment has been continually picketing, scouting, raiding and skirmishing.
July 27. - In a skirmish at Atchafalaya River, Colonel M. H. Chrysler then commanding Fourth Brigade Cavalry was severely wounded in the neck and right shoulder, which disabled him for present duty and obliged him to go home to recover from the wound.

December 9. - Participated in General [John Wynn] Davidson's raid.  Twenty of the veterans (with a detachment of the whole regiment) were detached for a special purpose.
December 10. - Met the enemy in force at McLeod's [or McCook's] Mills, Mississippi.  Charged the enemy and lost one noncommissioned officer and one private, killed, and orderly sergeant taken prisoner.  Average number of miles traveled per day, fifteen.

February 10. - Participated in raid on Fausse River, Louisiana in which we lost one corporal wounded in skirmish on Bayou Fordoche.  Number of miles traveled per day, fifteen.

June 23. - Captain Edward Van Voast took authorization papers to raise company for the Second Veteran Cavalry.
August 25. - The company, ninety-five strong, was mustered and was lettered B. The number of members was increased to 100, but so many were never present at one time.
October 23-25. - The regiment left Saratoga and arrived at Washington October 25.
October 30. - It received the state bounty.  It is now encamped at Giesborough Point, District of Columbia.

October 23-25. - Sixty-three are now stationed at Giesborough Point, District of Columbia.

    Engaged the enemy at McLeod's Mills and drove them four miles.  Marched from there to West Pascagoula, Mississippi at which place we took shipping and arrived at Morganza, Louisiana.  The distance marched is about 400 miles of an average distance per day of fifteen miles.

August 4-6. - Two days' scout to Fausse River and Rosedale.  One horse abandoned in march.
August 9-11. - Two days' scout to Old River.
August 15-19. - Four days' scout to Rosedale.  One horse abandoned.
August 23-28. - Five days' scout from port Hudson to Clinton.  In skirmish near Jackson, Louisiana.  One private and horse wounded, marched fifty miles  Total nine scouts.  Two privates wounded, one private captured by enemy.  Nine horses abandoned, one horse wounded.  Five hundred miles marched.

November 12-15. - Left Saratoga Thursday morning and arrived at Camp Stoneman Sunday,  November 15.  Distance traveled about 430 miles.

March 5. - Left Bloomingdale and marched to Algiers, a distance about seven miles.  Stayed overnight.
March 6-8. - Took the cars for Giesborough City.  Stopped two days.
March 10. - Twelve men detailed on scouting position.
March 13. - Sunday, general review.
March 14. - Monday marched to New Iberia.
March 15. - Tuesday the company was on picket, guarding telegraph wire.
March 16. - Wednesday were relieved from picket.  Resumed the march, twenty-two miles.  Halted overnight.  The captain and twenty men on picket.
March 17. - Thursday marched on the advance.
March 18. - Friday on advance.
March 19. - Saturday forty men on scouting expedition under Colonel Gurney.
March 20. - Sunday joined the column at Little Washington, Louisiana.
March 21. - Monday forty me advanced guard with Lieutenant [Christopher] Dolan.  Marched twenty-five miles.
March 22. - Tuesday marched to Cheneyville.  Nothing happened of importance.
March 23. - Still in advance.
March 24. - Reached Alexandria.  Nothing seen of Rebs.

April 4. - In a reconnaissance of the Third Brigade, Company K had five men wounded and four horses lost in action at Compti, six miles above Grand Encore.
April 9. - At Pleasant Hill, opening the action one man wounded and one horse killed.
April 20. - Left Grand Encore.
April 22. - Company crossed Care River to act as flanker on its right bank.
April 23. - In engagement one man and two horses wounded driving in enemy's skirmishers.
April 25. - Reached Alexandria.

May 1. - The company was on picket Governor [Thomas Overton] Moore's Plantations.
May 3. - Picket Hiram Keed wounded leg.
May 4-5. - Skirmishing.
May 6. - In camp, nothing of importance.
May 9. - The company was on picket at west side river.
May 12. - Pickets withdrawn at day break.  The Army commenced the backward march.  Lay at Alexandria all day.  Alexandria burned by jayhawkers.
May 13. - Assumed the march 2 o'clock, marched all day until 9 o'clock at night.  Nothing of importance.
May 14. - Marched all day.
May 15. - Lay still till 4 p.m. and advanced eight miles.  Some skirmishing through the day.
May 17. - Passed through Greenville, attacked the enemy.  General engagement.
May 18. - The company made a charge, took four prisoners and five horses, four guns.  Marched to Chapel Isle same day.
May 23. - Company detail, need for picket.
May 24. - Detail picket, nine men.
May 25. - Went out scouting.
May 26. - First lieutenant on picket.
May 27. - Camp Morganza, twelve men on picket.
May 28-30. - Camp.  Nothing of importance.

June 1-5. - Reconnaissance four days, commencing to-day.
June 9. - Recruits assigned to company: John Miner, Joseph Miner, Matthew Beardman, Andrew Anson, John Judge, William Wadsworth, John Patterson, Thomas Maloney.
June 11. - General review by General [Daniel Edgar] Sickles.
June 15. - Escort company, outpost pickets.
June 16-18. - In the morning went on three days' raid up Mississippi.  Returned June 18 with no damage.

    This company, through the whole of General [Nathaniel Prentiss] Banks' Red River campaign, has been constantly on marches and scouts since March 14.  It has lost but four horses drawn in New Orleans in March 1864, the rest having been worn out by forced marches and heavy duty.  Had one man killed in action, six wounded and many of the horses killed.
