Commodore Report

I was very happy to see so many of you at our recent Bull Roast! From all the conversations, laughter and dancing it seems that everyone had a really good time. I only wish I had more time that evening to visit with more people!

The Parkinson's Walk has seen another year and congratulations go out to Vice Commodore Don Antos and his many helpers! Everyone got registered, walked, ate and listened to some great music. It was a lot of fun to walk with everyone and see the wonderful receptions we received when we arrived at Sue Haven and then Crescent.

We have some very special people who help us every year at those clubs and at our base at Eastern. They are truly great! We were able to present Becky Dunlop from Johns Hopkins a good amount of money and she in turn surprised us with a beautiful plaque. What an honor that was!

Our next big event is Opening Day. Our 48th Annual Opening Day will be held on May 11 at Sparrows Point Country Club. Again it will be started with breakfast at 10 AM and followed by our Opening at 11 AM. I hope to see many of you there.

And please, join us in attending some of our sister Club's Openings. Many of these span an entire weekend and have parties and dinners associated with them. It is really a lot of fun!

Don't forget, our final Membership Meeting until our September Crab Feast will be held May 17th. I realize that it is getting warm now and many of you would rather be on your boats or out doing something in the fresh air, but we need your attendance at these meetings. April Geisler, Event Chair has done a great deal of work getting a menu together that has been very good and May is slated to be a buffet. We also are trying to schedule a guest speaker and there may be a fun give-away....but, unless you come, you won't be a part of the fun!

On a more serious note, we also need to have attendance at these meetings in order to conduct any Club business. At the April meeting we were not able to have an official meeting because we didn't have enough people. While, those who came had a wonderful dinner and great conversation, had it been necessary to vote on anything or conduct any business it would not have been possible.

Well, off to the Openings! Have a great Month of May, see you at the Membership Meeting and around the Bay!

Vice Commodore Report

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry; two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of the days is Yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world can't bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word said - Yesterday is Gone!!

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds -- but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

This leaves only one day -- TODAY! Any man can fight the battle of just one day. It is only when you and I have the burdens in those two awful eternities -- YESTERDAY and TOMORROW - that we breakdown.

It is not the experience of TODAY that drives men mad -- it is the remorse or bitterness for something that happened yesterday and the dread of what TOMORROW may bring.

Let us, therefore, live but - ONE DAY AT A TIME!

Fleet Chaplain Report

Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark:

Don't miss the boat.

Remember that we're all in the same boat.

Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.

Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, as Noah was, someone may ask you to do something really big.

Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

Build your future on high ground.

For safety's sake, travel in pairs.

Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the
cheetahs.

When you're stressed, float a while.

Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

Parkinson's Disease Walk-A-Thon

The sixth annual MCC Walk-A-Thon charity event for the Johns Hopkins Parkinson Disease Research Center was held on Sunday, April 21st.

Contributions in the amount of $5109 were presented to Becky Dunlop R.N., B.S.N., Nurse Coordinator for the center, at the end of the day.

The donation was presented in the name of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs.

A big thank you to Eastern YC, Sue Creek YC and Crescent YC for their facilities and staff that were made available for our walkers, and, once again, to Robin and the Rythmix for donating hours of live music.

A special thank you to the princesses of Baltimore YC, Belvedere YC, Bush River YC, Crescent YC, Eastern YC, Marley Boat, Maryland Cruising Club, Maryland YC, Otter YC, Outcast YC, Sue Creek YC, Ventnor YC, White Rocks YC. Their efforts in signing up pledges made a significant contribution to our success.

And, finally, a personal thank you to all the MCC volunteer workers who supported the Walk-A-Thon and those who made personal contributed to our charity fund.

If anyone still wishes to make a contribution, get in touch with V/C Don Antos.

The Choking Gourmet

Over the years we’ve eaten in just about every Italian restaurant in Little Italy, and frankly we found most of them have become nothing more than tourist traps. A couple of weeks ago, we had supper at Chiapparelli’s and were very disappointed. I had ordered the Eggplant Parmesan, which arrived without the pasta side. I questioned the waitress as to the absence of the pasta, that everywhere else I’ve ever ordered the eggplant, it came with a pasta side. She said rather rudely, “ I’ve been here for twenty years, and we’ve never served pasta with eggplant” Needless to say we won’t go back there.

On the other hand, Caesar’s Den at 223 South High Street in Little Italy is fantastic. They cater to mostly regulars, not a lot of tourists here. The food and service was fantastic. We were not rushed in any way and were made to feel at home. The girls fell in love with the waiter who’s name is Adam. The bill for six people came to about $300.00 including the tip, which breaks down to $100.00 per couple. This included a couple of drinks for each, appetizers, salad and our dinners. The lamb Chop with rosemary was the biggest and best I have ever had.

The Other Side

Typesetting the newsletter gives me an opportunity to see the articles before they are published to the rest of the club.

This month, after reading the Choking Gourmet from B/M Al Freedman, I felt it was important to provide a “counterpoint” to his Chiapparelli’s article.

Brian & I eat out—a lot! We’ve also been to several eating establishments in Little Italy—of them, Chiapparelli’s is one of my favorites—due not only to the delicious flavor of their house salad dressing—but also because of the ambience and friendly workers.

Several weeks ago, Brian & I along with Libbie & Warren Eastburn and four other friends arranged to meet there for dinner.

Our server was a fun, home town Baltimore girl named Laurie. We talked with her about buying some of the salad dressing—however, it was obvious that she was advised not to allow that to happen—so we spent some time teasing with her trying to get her to sell us some!

When everyone’s dinner came, I was left without a meal—Laurie was mortified—she straightened out the entire mess and brought my dinner only after insisting that I would not have to pay for it.

When my meal did come, she asked if there was anything else she could do for me since my meal was delayed.

Without missing a beat, I said, “Well, if you can see your way clear to get me some . . .” That was all I could get out.

She proceeded to load up a large aluminum pan of their 3 finest imported cheeses (asiago, romano, and parmesan) and told us the secret of making the famous salad dressing on our own!

Our experience with Chiapparelli’s was superb, not only because of the company, but because of our delightful waitress!

Needless to say, we will be back!

Judge for yourself!
