Commodore Report

September....As of the 23rd Summer will officially be over. That's the "bad" news, the Good news is that with September our General Membership Meetings begin once again. It all starts again this month on the 21st with our Annual Crab Feast. Come out and join us for some fun times picking crabs, some wonderful conversation, and generally a lot of fun. This year our Crab Feast will again be held at Key Yacht Club. This is a great time to see people you may not have seen for quite awhile and the crabs are always good at Key! Our next function will be our Fleet Review on the weekend of September 28th and will be held at Red Eye Yacht Club. I attended a planning meeting at Key Yacht Club recently and it sounds like this will be a lot of fun. MCC will be helping out at the entrance table and our own B/M Al has volunteered to take pictures. I hope that all is well with everyone and that I'll get to see many of you soon at these upcoming functions. Enjoy the rest of the Summer and I'll see you around the Bay!

Vice Commodore Report

CRUISES

The MCC Labor Day cruise to the Georgetown Yacht Basin took place on August 25th, September 1st and 2nd. We previously did a cruise to Rock Hall Landing on the weekend of August 24th and 25th. Both locations had topnotch facilities. Georgetown is a longer cruise but the lower cost of dockage and dining is certainly attractive.

We had a little bit of rain at Rock Hall and a whole lot of rain at Georgetown. Thanks to Lou and Darlene Sauer, their 52’ Hatteras is a great party boat, rain or shine.

CRAB FEAST, FROST BITE AND FLEET REVIEW

Just a reminder, we still have a Crab Feast/cruise at Key YC on Saturday, September 21st and the Frostbite/Fleet Review at Red eye YC on September 28th and 29th. The morning of September 29th, Commodore Angela and V/C Don will provide the usual breakfast for our MCC members.

COMMODORE’S BALL

This year’s MCC Commodore’s Ball will be held on November 2nd at Martin’s Eastwind on Pulaski Highway. We’ll begin with the Martin hors d’oeuvres that are always a big hit. An open bar will offer top of the line premium brands, imported beers and a variety of frozen drinks. Robin and the Rhythmix will play a lot of 50’s and 60’s music that you and I enjoy.

Come on out!!!

The Choking Gourmet

Betty and I have just returned from our boat trip to Philadelphia where we attended the Delaware River Yachtsmans League’s Queen Pageant.

Attending by car was our very own P/C-V/C Donald Antos, Commodore of CBYCA Joe Hellner, Vice Commodore Ken Bean, Rear Commodore Betty Stahler their mates, and Queen of the Chesapeake Bridget Smith.

If you want to see photo’s of the new Queen and the runners up please log on the CBYCA web site http://www.cbyca.org.

The new Queen is from Riverside Yacht Club (of Pennsylvania) and her name is Casey Natrin.

We were invited to stay while in Philadelphia at Harbor Light Yacht Club in Essington. The owner and Commodore Butch Gricco, would not take a penny for our dockage, electric or cable hook-up. They even took us out for supper and had a couple of cook outs for us, they even left us their “Caddy” should we need transportation. I must say that the Chesapeake yachting community could learn a lot about hospitality from the Pennsylvania clubs, and in particular from Butch & Barbara Gricco, their daughter Barbara (Past Queen) and son Joey.

On our return trip from Philadelphia we stopped at Chesapeake Inn on the south side of the C&D Canal. After docking and cleaning up we decided to visit a couple of watering holes in beautiful down town Chesapeake City. By chance we came upon a very nice little place called “The Yacht Club Restaurant.”

With a name like that we had to go in. We were greeted by the owner, bartender and chef Gary Klunk and were introduced to his partner Cherri Wilson. Betty & I ordered our favorite drinks and Gary was not at all skimpy. While having our drinks we scanned the menu and found an 8 oz. filet topped with lump crab meat, veggies and garlic mashed potatoes. The beef was cooked the way I ordered it as was Betty’s. I cannot remember having a better filet. Our waitress Roxanne was very prompt & friendly. I wish the Yacht Club Restaurant was a little closer.

* * * * * * * * *

The priest stood at the church door greeting the parishioners after mass. “Good Morning Mrs. O’Riley, I married you ten years ago, I never see any of your children in church.”

“Deed you did marry us Father, we’ve not been blessed with children. My husband and I have tried to have a baby but have not been successful,” said Mrs. O’Riley.

“I’m going to Rome for a few years sabbatical”, said the priest, “I’ll light a candle for you in the great cathedral at the Vatican. Perhaps the Holy Mother will look kindly on you and your husband.”

Several years later, back at the church door, greeting parishioners, the priest meets Mrs. O’Riley. “Mrs. O’Riley, did you ever have any children?”

“Deed I did Father,” she said, pointing to the family behind her. “We’ve had a set of triplets, a set of twins, and two singles since we last saw you!”

“Praise be the Holy Mother. She truly blessed you. But I don’t see Mr. O’Riley , is he here?”

“No. He’s gone to Rome to blow out your candle!”
