Commodore Report

SEPTEMBER OVERVIEW

Hello everyone, I hope this finds you in good health. We did the Labor Day cruise to Miles River YC and that was a blast. This proved to be a popular destination as folks from our sister clubs Red Eye, Salem, and Ventnor cruised in as well. We had good weather for the long Labor Day weekend.  It has been a fairly decent summer season for boating, not too hot, a little on the wet side, maybe.  Let’s hope September is dryer as we are cruising to SKIPJACK COVE on the 13 &14th and finish up on the 27th &28th with the Frost Bite/ Fleet Review at the Maryland YC.   Somehow the weather has worked out most of the time for Fleet Captain Joanie Ridnour and the MCC cruisers this year.  She tells me she crosses her fingers and toes for good weather, so, if it works, I guess we should try this before next year’s Opening Day.

MCC CRAB FEAST AT KEY YC

I look forward to seeing many of you at our annual Crab Feast on Saturday, September 20st at Key YC.  I’ve been to Key YC for “crab crackin” more than a few times and I’ll guarantee you I went away pleased every time.   So, come out and enjoy some good conversation, a full menu of great food and pitchers of cold beer – it doesn’t get much better.  Personally, I can’t wait to hit the crab soup.  By the way, Darlene Sauer took the lead in setting up the crab feast so tell her ”thanks” when you see her on the 20th.

FROST BITE/FLEET REVIEW

Regarding the Frost Bite/Fleet Review on September 27th & 28th at Maryland YC, the plan for the weekend consists of a pier party on Saturday afternoon, a dinner/dance on Saturday night.  Bring your boat and join the fleet.  If you come by car, there will be room aboard a boat for you.

Our Saturday evening dinner/dance looks great.  We’ll have a social hour starting at 6:30 that includes beer, wine and soda, plus, cheeses and vegetable dips.  The sit down dinner will start with a salad and will feature a stuffed pork chop with glazed carrots and a baked potato.  We’ll finish with a MCC cake for dessert.   Baked chicken can be substituted if requested a week ahead of the affair.  To top the affair off, we will have an evening of music for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Fleet Captain Report

Maryland Cruising Club’s trip to Castle Harbor Marina on 8-10 August was lots of fun.  Nine boats signed up for the cruise; however, two of the boats could not make the trip.  Captain Kent and Pat Alpaugh were not able to go on this or the Tilghman Island cruise because of problems with their boat. I understand they had everything loaded on the boat (including Pat’s sister and brother-in-law) and ready to go to Tilghman Island when their boat first broke down. They had to turn around and unload the boat and they were so disappointed. This past weekend by the time the proper part was delivered, it was too late for them to start the trip.  Hopefully, all of the problems have been solved so they can make the next cruise.  Thank you Pat and Kent for all of your efforts.

Captain Wayne and Cathy Cope were not able to make the Castle Harbor cruise because of an oil leak.  And Cathy explained to me they were having another smelly problem.  It seems that the prior owner of their boat never had the holding tank emptied.  She said they have been carrying around this 55-gallon coffin of sewage that is right under her side of the bed. Needless to say, Cathy told Captain Wayne that even when the problem is solved, they are switching sides. Hopefully it will all be resolved before the Labor Day cruise to Miles River Yacht Club. We miss you guys!

Our Commodore Don and Lady Rosalie had a few problems this weekend.  Their children were staying at their shore home and wanted to surprise them by making repairs on their dock.  BIG SURPRISE! They had to do some FAST nailing before Don and Rosalie could even board their boat.  When they loaded everything aboard and started the trip to Castle Harbor, GOING BALD lost an engine.  Don turned the boat around, docked it, they unloaded their things, put everything in their car and drove to Castle Harbor Marina to join us for the barbecue and pool party.  I would like to thank them very much for putting so much effort into joining all of us.  This was going to be their first trip on their boat this season.

Castle Harbor Marina is beautiful, the weather was great, we had a pool/hot tub party both nights, and members had fun riding bicycles, taking walks and visiting with one another during the day.  But more than that was the feeling of friendship and team building we had over the weekend.  The members that arrived Friday decided to have a pizza party on Troy and Carla Brook’s boat that evening in lieu of going out to dinner.  I know we had much more fun on the boat, and Carla and Troy made drinks for everyone and put all kinds of munchies out for us.  Saturday morning they invited everyone aboard their boat for breakfast that Carla and Betty Stahler put together.  Everyone pitched in and made the Saturday night barbecue and Sunday morning brunch so special.  Saturday night, Captain Duane kept running to different grills to dodge raindrops.  Thankfully, it didn’t rain very long—just a downpour just as Duane was trying to light the grills.  A lot of members pitched in and helped him while others helped to put the food on the table.  I left my tablecloths at home and before you knew it Joyce Filius was offering me the use of hers.  I can’t even begin to tell you how good the food was that everyone prepared.  We had hot dogs, hamburgers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, all the condiments, sloppy Joe, vegetable kabobs, shrimp salad, broccoli salad, deviled eggs, chips and dip, potato chips, brownies, cream puffs, jelly beans, and watermelon.  We also had a cooler full of sodas, beer and wine coolers.  Sunday morning we had a wonderful Mexican casserole; potato casserole; bagels and cream cheese; muffins, a beautiful watermelon filled with fresh fruit, orange juice, and Al’s great Bloody Mary’s. Betty Stahler said everyone made so much good food that we should put together a Maryland Cruising Club cookbook.

Our motto still holds true:   MEETING AND CRUISING FREQUENTLY IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF SOCIABILITY AND GOOD FELLOWSHIP.

MILES RIVER YACHT CLUB:  Five boats have signed up to cruise to beautiful St. Michaels on August 30-September 1.  The cost for the slip is $1.35 per foot per night.  Electric cost $5 for 30 amp and $10 for two 30 amps per night.  The yacht club is having a crab feast/barbecue at a cost of $30 each and is non-refundable.

SKIPJACK COVE:  Four boats have signed up to cruise down the beautiful Sassafras River to Skipjack Cove Marina September 12-14.  You can stay both Friday and Saturday nights or just one night.  The price for dockage is $1.50 a foot per night and electric cost $5 for one 30 amp and $10 for two 30’s or one 50 amp.  They have a restaurant onsite and live music on Saturday night.  You can take a free water taxi to the Granary and the Kitty Knight House restaurants and shops at Georgetown Yacht Basin.  The pool will be open and there are walking trails.

The price is a grand total of $879 per person for an inside cabin (172 square feet and a king size bed unless you want two singles).  The price includes port fees and taxes, accommodations, ocean transportation, fabulous entertainment and daily activities, on-board meals and some beverages.   This is a grand total of $80 per day.  If we can get 8 cabins, we will get approximately $600 returned after the cruise and that will be divided   among each person.   That means for an inside cabin each person would pay approximately $841.  For a little extra money, you can have a cabin with a window or balcony.  The price does not include shore excursions, personal expenses, gratuities, or alcoholic beverages (bring a bottle or two for your room).  This will be our 4th trip on the Celebrity ships and our 3rd trip on the Galaxy.  I have researched this trip extensively and this is a great deal, especially over a holiday.  Since we leave on Monday, 24 November, Captain Duane and I plan on decorating for Christmas the weekend of 22-23 November so if we feel a little down coming back from a wonderful vacation our house will be decorated and it will cheer us up.  If you are interested, please call Fleet Captain Joanie at home (410) 437-4390 or e-mail me at jridnour@comdt.uscg.mil.

FLEET REVIEW is less than a month away.   It will be held at Maryland Yacht Club on 27–28 September.   Many people told me they were taking pictures and would give me a copy so I can have them for our Fleet Review.  I have a few that I took, but I am sure there are some more great shots out there.  I am hoping everyone who took pictures of our land cruise, boat cruises, openings, parties, etc. will give me a copy ASAP so I can start working on the Fleet Review.   If you write your name and also where the picture was taken on the back that would be helpful.  If you want your pictures back, I will return them to you.  Or you can scan them and send them to my e-mail address. 

SOMETHING I READ THIS WEEK AND WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON:

Don’t spend major time with minor people.  If there are people in your life that continually disappoint you, break promises, stomp on your dreams, too judgmental, have different values and don’t help you during difficult times…that is not a friend.

To have a friend, be a friend.  Sometimes in life as you grow, your friends will either grow or go.  Surround yourself with people who reflect your values, goals, interests and lifestyle and who encourage you to seek your dreams.

When I think of any of my successes, I am thankful to God from whom all blessings flow, and to my family and friends that enrich my life.

Over the years my address book has changed because I changed for the better.

At first you think you’re going to be alone, but after a while new people show up in your life that make your life so much sweeter and easier to endure.

Remember what your elders used to say, “Birds of a feather flock together.”  If you’re an eagle, don’t hang around chickens.  CHICKENS CAN’T FLY!

Fleet Surgeon Report - Dioxins

Carcinogens cause cancer -- Especially breast cancer.

Don't freeze your plastic water bottles with water as this also releases
dioxins in the plastic. Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle Hospital was on a
TV program explaining this health hazard. He is the manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital. He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or Ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results without the dioxins. So such things as TV dinners, weight watchers dinners, lean cuisine dinners, instant ramen cup of noodles, and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. Just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants
moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is
one of the reasons. To add to this: saran wrap placed over foods as they
are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food, use paper towels.

Sick & Welfare

Get Well wishes go out to Dick Sulcer who is now out of the hospital and up to his old tricks. I have been told by Pat Brettschneider that he still
needs to go for therapy on the knee but that doesn't keep him down. He is back to driving himself around town. It's hard to keep a good guy down.

And speaking of "good guys", P/C Jim Poling took ownership of a new car. It's no wonder that he had a speedy recovery in order to drive that new car of his. Some men need a little motivation.

I understand that Sharon Rebbel is feeling much better after her surgery and will be up to her normal activities very soon.

We have received word that P/C Fred Boehmer of Marley Boat Club has passed away. Fred and his wife Carol, the current Commodore of Marley Boat Club, have been members of the boating community for many years. Fred is also the 1985 P/C of CCC and the first King of the Chesapeake for 1992. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

Low Carbohydrate Recipes

Low Carb Pulled Pork (with or without Meema's BBQ Sauce)

1 boneless pork shoulder - 3-4 pounds

1/2 bottle (3.5 ounce bottle) liquid smoke

Meema's BBQ sauce (optional)

In the morning, place boneless pork shoulder in a crock-pot. Pour 1/2 of a 3.5 oz bottle of Liquid Smoke all over the top and cover. No other liquid is necessary. Cook for six -seven hours. (If you don't have a crock-pot, get one. There is no cheaper, easier, better way to have dinner waiting for you when you get home from a long day unless your mother lives with you.)

When ready to serve, remove to a platter and pull into chunks with two forks. Serve with or without Meema's BBQ sauce. Pulled pork prepared this way has no carbs. Meema's BBQ sauce has 3.1 carbs per cup.

CBYCA Delegate Report

At the last meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club Association, Classic Boat Club was admitted to membership. Commodore Ken Jordan advised that they can be contacted at http://www.Classicyachtclub.org. Anyone having a boat, power, sail, glass, or wood  25 years old or older may join.

The first delivery by tanker to the rehabilitated Liquid National Gas (LGN) facility to Cove Point was made at the end of July. Cove Point is located at the northern entrance to Solomon's Island and the Patuxent River. This area, and in particular, the LNG pier itself, has not had tanker traffic in many years. As is the case with all large shipping on the bay, we are reminded not to approach within 100 yards, and to slow to a minimum speed within 500 yards of any commercial ship or U.S. Naval vessel.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that the Broad Thorofare section of the ICW , closed for more then a decade due to shoaling, will be dredged to provide access and safe passage for recreational and commercial vessels.

HB1001-Exemptions from Excise Tax was vetoed by Governor Ehrlich. The primary purpose of this bill was to allow out of state residents to purchase a vessel in Maryland and cruise Maryland waters for a period of 90 days without paying Maryland Excise Tax. The DNR was not opposed to the bill initially but 24 hours before the veto deadline was reached it reversed itself and became opposed to the bill because they could lose revenue.

HB-442- Task force to study licensing of  boaters. CBYCA has requested that the governor place a CBYCA Board Member on the task force that will study the feasibility of licensing all boaters. The governor’s decision should have been made sometime in June. Al Simon is trying to schedule a lunch in August with Governor Ehrlich at Selby Bay Yacht Club to discuss the governor’s feelings on recreational boating issues. Mr. Simon my be looking for monetary support for the lunch. (Mr. Al Simon is a representative to the Maryland Boat Act Advisory Committee (BAAC).

Maryland Cruising Club’s Past Commodore in 1996, Betty Stahler was nominated for Commodore of CBYCA. Her ball will be on December 13, 2003 at Best Western Hotel/Conference Center, located at 5625 O’Donnell Street in Baltimore (just off RT# 95). Time and price not yet determined. It would be nice to support your past “Commodorable” Betty by making reservations.

For The Good Of The Club - What Does That Mean?

Have you ever heard the term  “For the Good of the Club”?  Maybe you heard it at a Membership Meeting or you saw it in the MCC By-Laws or maybe you even heard it mentioned on a club cruise. Do you know what it means? I’ll tell you want it means to me. It means that if those 6 “little big” words are not attached to the reason I want to do something that affects Maryland Cruising then I won’t do it. It could be as important as voting on a candidate for an Office or as little as planning what dinner selection we would have at a dinner meeting. “For the Good of the Club” is my agenda and I have no other.

Have you heard in the past or present that one specific person saved Maryland Cruising Club? Maybe you are a new member and don’t know too much about MCC’s history or maybe you are an older member and because someone told you this you thought it was true. Call me naďve, and I have been called that, we all know that NO ONE person can save a club. If you have been told this, then you have been misinformed. Doesn’t it take the unity of the Club, Officers and Membership, to give life to a club that might have fallen on hard times?  It takes leadership backed by people who have strong communication skills, project management skills, a positive attitude and energetic qualities. Oh, that’s not to say that this club hasn’t seen its share of trying times with divided camps and negativism. Struggles cropped, there was little cooperation and bad things were said about this one and that one, innuendo, half-truths and worse entered the scene. Where do you go from here?

New members! Thank goodness for new blood. New members were asked to step up and take positions as an Officer or be on the Board. These members brought a fresh outlook and the knowledge and skills that it takes to help build a cooperative team. The Officers and Board encouraged participation and listened to the needs of the membership.  There were no hidden agendas and any problems that arose would be dealt with within the Board and even though we might not all agree about certain issues, we were firm about the fact that whatever decision was made we would show a united front and keep unpleasantness from reaching the general membership.  We worked through the challenges until we found an answer that everyone could at least live with and then closed the ranks behind our decision.

This concentrated effort worked by using those 6 little big words, “For The Good of The Club”. The momentum started its upward climb to a cohesive group. The dark days were behind us and the General Membership meetings became fun again and enthusiasm and spirit returned.

Have you also heard, when you were a captive audience, on a club cruise or a meeting about something that someone might have done with no chance for that person to refute what has been said? Remember, as in our own daily life, there are 2 sides to every story and believing one without hearing the other is wrong.

Again, we find ourselves in an upward climb. In my humble opinion, gratefully holding a Life Member Status in the club and having SERVED 26 years in practically every aspect, I believe there is only 1 reason that anyone should take an office in MCC and that is you truly want to make an unselfish contribution to the organization and SERVE the membership. There should be no agenda other than the one that has those 6 little big words. These words should be ever present in our minds and guiding our every decision and they are “FOR THE GOOD OF THE CLUB”.

The Choking Gourmet

I must thank Joanie and Duane for turning us on to the Chart House in Annapolis. Every Tuesday and Thursday they have “Prime Time”.  A complete prime rib dinner; 10oz. slow roasted prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, salad bar and bread basket all for $15.95. The salad bar alone is worth the money. There is every thing you could ever want on the salad bar including caviar. There is one warning however; have your before dinner drinks somewhere else. Beer, (Domestic) is $4.00 a bottle and mixed drinks $7.95.

And if you are a steak lover you must try Anchor Inn on Wednesday nights. They have a 16oz. N.Y. strip steak for $9.95 which includes a salad and a veggie. If there is an Orioles ball game on that night domestic beer is only $1.00, except when they have live music.  Anchor Inn is located on Old Water Point Road in beautiful Pasadena.

Subject: Jewish Firefighters

One dark night outside a small town, a fire started inside the local chemical plant, and in a blink exploded into flames.

The alarm went out to the fire departments for miles around. When the volunteer fighters appeared on the scene the chemical company president rushed to the fire chief and said, "All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the center of the plant. They must be saved. I will give $50,000 to the fire department that brings them out intact."

But the roaring flames held the firefighters off. Soon more fire departments had to be called in as the situation became desperate. As the fireman arrived the president shouted out that the offer was now $100.000 to the company who could bring out the company’s secret files.

From the distance, a lone siren was heard as another fire truck came into sight. It was the nearby Jewish rural township volunteer Fire Company composed of men over the age of 65. To everyone’s amazement, the little run-down fire engine operated by this Jewish fire Department, passed all the newer sleek engines parked outside the plant……and drove right into the middle of the inferno.

Outside, the other firemen watched as the Jewish old timers jumped off and began to fight the fire with a performance and effort never seen before. Within a short time, the Jewish old timers had extinguished the fire and saved the secret formulas.

The grateful chemical company president joyfully announced that for such a superhuman feat he was upping the reward to $200,000, and walked over to personally thank each of the brave, tough elderly Jewish firefighters.

The local TV news reporters rushed in after capturing the event on film asking “What are you going to do with all that money”?  “Vell” said Ami Hertzfeld, the 70 year old fire chief, “The first thing we are going to do is fix the brakes on the truck!”

Announcing . . . . Past Commodore’s Annual Crab Feast!!!!!!

Once again this year, Maryland Cruising Club will host it’s annual Past Commodore’s Crab Feast to be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003.  This popular event will be held At Key Yacht Club starting at 5:00 pm and lasting through 9:00 pm.

All MCC members are cordially invited to attend, along with any guests you may wish to Invite.  Each MCC Past Commodore in attendance will receive a special gift in recognition of their service to the Club.

In addition to the steamed crabs and steamed corn-on-the cob,  our menu will include Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbeque, salads and dessert, along with draft beer and fountain Soda.  A cash bar will be available for all bottle beer and mixed drinks.

Start planning now . . . call your best friends and invite them along.  Seating limited to First 110 folks to respond.  Member price will be $18/person, with guests at $25/person.

MCC Has Special Balls for 2004!!!!!

The 2004 Cruising Year marks a special celebration for Maryland Cruising Club - our 50th Anniversary year.  To help us start off the season, we will be honoring all our 2004 Officers and Board Members at our Commodore's Ball on Saturday, November 1st. Each and every member is invited to join in the celebration . . . get dressed up in your finest . . . come out ready to party and enjoy!! Dine on a special selection of culinary delights, and dance the night away to the tunes of Robin & The Rhythmix!!!

As Chairperson of the Registration Committee, I am asking each member to please check your calendars, mark off the date, and drop me a note, voice mail or email to confirm your attendance.  Let's show our support not only for your hard-working officers, but for our great little Club and our 50th anniversary  . . . reserve your Ball seating now so you're not left out.

Our second exciting event this season is the 2004 CBYCA Ball honoring our very own P/C Betty Stahler who will be installed as Commodore.  This event is scheduled for Saturday, December 13th and promises to be a grand affair.  We'd like to see as many MCC members as possible come out and show your support for both P/C Betty and Maryland Cruising Club.  Fine dining and dancing to the tunes of The Satellites promises to keep everyone entertained!

Once again, as Chairperson of the Registration Committee, I'm asking each member to notify me if you plan to attend.  We will try to have
special seating available for the home Club of the new Commodore.

Many Thanks!

For the past 2 years, I have been preparing the monthly Scuttlebutt and updating that, and other, information on the MCC Web Site. Effective with the completion of the October Scuttlebutt, I will no longer be working on the newsletter and web site. Those responsibilities will pass on to MCC's upcoming Vice Commodore. Brian & I are planning our boat trip to Florida and that time is quickly coming upon us. We wish all of the members the best of luck in the upcoming years.

The last 6 years as an officer (Secretary, Fleet Captain, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, Commodore, Immediate Past Commodore) and 2 years as an assistant to the officers (Scuttlebutt Editor, Web Master, Bull Roast Coordinator--and resident Karaoke Queen) has been great fun for me. Brian and I have met many, many wonderful people and have established very strong friendships during our time in office. We'll keep you posted on our travels!!
