The Scuttlebutt - October, 2003 Volume XLIX, Issue 12 Return To Newsletters
Commodore Report If you have tried to communicate with me recently, more than likely, you have been unsuccessful. About three weeks ago, my dial up Email with Earthlink suddenly stopped working. The bottom line is, I have not been able to send or receive Email for weeks. I believe it is a hardware problem, possibly the Modem. I have not cleared up the trouble so it looks like its time to hand the problem off to Gateway. I apologize if you sent me a message but have not received an answer. Thee next thing to happen was the big hurricane. It blew down a 100’ oak tree and an 80’ beech tree that tore down my power, phone and cable TV service lines. Unfortunately, it also tore my service cable and meter box from the house and smashed the latter on the concrete patio. The neighborhood got service after four days. Now, it’s almost a week later and I’m still calling BGE in an effort to get back in service. Worst yet, BGE is now telling me I need a contractor to do part of the work. It’s possible I could be without power for weeks. My telephone cable is laying on the ground. If you left me a voice mail, I haven’t gotten it. Also, I understand my phone company voice recorder is no longer accepting any more messages. And, the beat goes on. As I prepare to turn the gavel over to the incoming Commodore, I am confident that we will all pull together in 2004 to continue to enjoy our boats and the wonderful Chesapeake Bay. I would like to give a special thanks to all the officers and Board members for 2003 and to Princess Laura for their great support. To all our members, thank you for allowing me to serve MCC for 2003-2003. Rosalie and I had a very enjoyable year. - Commodore Donald W Antos Vice Commodore Report It has been my pleasure to serve MCC membership as Vice Commodore this year. This is my last article and I would like to extend my thanks to some people who supported me and stood by me. I would first like to thank my family for their love and support. Thanks to P/C Mike Murray who told me to do whatever my heart told me was for the “good of the club”. Thank you to my Princess Katie who stepped up whenever I needed her. She helped collate Scuttlebutts, stuff envelopes and affix labels and even graciously performed duties that I volunteered her for. That’s my girl. And now to the worker bees. I know that what is stated here will only cover a small portion of the things that they have done for MCC. A great big humongous thanks to P/C Pam Hunt for her help in publishing the Scuttlebutt every month and maintaining the MCC website. She has made this a great publication. Whenever I would say to her, “ Pam, I’ve been thinking ….”, she made it happen. She made things happen and thought of things to be put in the newsletter that I hadn’t even begun to think about. Thanks also to P/C Pam for stepping up to chair MCC’s Bull & Oyster Roast. She took on that job with a goal in mind and with enthusiasm and a lot of hard work, she and her team made it a great success. A big thanks to Pat Brettschneider and P/C Chris . I don’t know if I will have enough room to mention everything that Pat & P/C Chris have done for MCC this year. Pat made the Princess cake, co-chaired the Bull Roast, planned and coordinated the silent auction, made the flowers for the court and the Princesses for Opening day; co chaired the raffle and made the gift basket. Every time she was asked, she stepped up to the plate, hit a home run, and P/C Chris was right beside her. Thank you both for all of your help and support. Thanks to our printer Louie Sauer. He has always been there for us and for this I am very grateful. Thanks to P/C Darlene Sauer who met me many times at the Baltimore Travel Plaza to exchange either the proof of the Scuttlebutt that was ready for printing or to drop of the finished product that I would mail to the membership. I will miss those meetings. Many thanks to P/C Brian Hunt who chaired Special Events. Brian took it upon himself to go back to some of the old methods and called members to remind them of dinner meetings. By doing this he managed to bring more members to the meetings than we have had in several years. P/C Brian and I worked together as a team with Sparrows Point Country Club Management to make plans for upcoming events and selecting the dinners that would be served. He also chaired Opening Day and even though it turned out to be a rain event we still had a great time. Thank you to our First Lady, St. Rosalie for all the behind the scenes help that she provided this year. Never wanting to be in the limelight but always demonstrating her support and dedication to MCC. A great big thank you to Princess Laura for representing Maryland Cruising Club this year. I want to wish you the best of luck in all of you future endeavors. I know that there are many people that I have not mentioned that have worked very hard to make this a successful year. You know who you are and I extend a BIG THANK YOU FROM ME TO YOU! I would like to finally address the letter that was sent out under Commodore Antos’ signature. This letter was in response to my letter that was sent to the membership stating my reasons for stepping down. His letter states that my letter was filled with “untruths and inaccuracies” yet when I called the Commodore, as I’m sure you did, and asked what the untruths and inaccuracies were, he had nothing to back up his statement. I have worked very hard to SERVE the membership since first becoming a member back in 1977. Everything I have done has been done because I love MCC and it’s members. It is very important for you to know that I have never and I repeat never lied to you about anything. I am going to miss being involved in the inner workings and governing of MCC but I’m sure that we will be just fine. I want to wish incoming Commodore Louie Sauer the best of luck and personally thank him for stepping up and taking the helm as our 50th Commodore. - V/C Dottie Murray October, 2003

Four boats signed up for the cruise; however, Commodore Donald Antos and Lady Rosalie had to cancel their trip by boat. Once again, they loaded everything on the boat, started their journey to the yacht club and one engine failed. They went home, took everything off the boat, loaded it into their car and drove to the yacht club. They arrived late afternoon and needed to sit and relax after their ordeal. They stayed at a motel in St. Michaels Saturday night just so they could share the cruise with us. Miles River Yacht Club had a great crab feast Saturday night and a real nice buffet breakfast Sunday morning. We had a cocktail party Sunday afternoon and everyone had so much to eat and drink that we really did not need dinner, but we could not pass up the club’s spaghetti dinner buffet. On Monday, we all prepared a nice breakfast and ate together on the picnic tables overlooking the water. Over the weekend, Captain Duane and I, Betty and Al, Carla and Troy, and Carla’s sister Jeanie all rode bicycles to St. Michaels. Al rode his bicycle all the way to Easton. Sheila and Larry relaxed by the pool and after riding the bicycles we could not wait to jump in that beautiful pool. Because Miles River Yacht Club was in short supply of electricity, Sharon and Ron Rebbel took a group of four boats with them and they went to Osprey Point at Rock Hall for the weekend. Two boats had friends from Sparrows Point on board and the other two boats belonged to Kent and Pat Alpaugh and Shirley and Jim Poling. I understand everyone had a wonderful time on that trip also. I
thought it best to cancel the trip to Skipjack Cove because of the wind and
rainy weather. As luck would have it, the
weather cleared up on Saturday afternoon. Ken
Norris lives directly across the Bay from the cove so he went by boat and said
he and his guests had a great time. - Fleet Captain Joanie Ridnour Fleet Surgeon Report - Savoring Each Moment - V/C Dottie Murray Sick & Welfare If you know of anyone who has been ill, please contact Fleet Surgeon Sharon Rebbel so she can send a card and we can post the information in the Scuttlebutt! P/C Brian Hunt will be having outpatient surgery on his knee on October 6th. We wish him a speedy recovery. Please keep P/C Pam Hunt's mother Kay Wharton in your thoughts and prayers. Ms. Kay has been under the weather recently and we hope that she back to old self real soon. Secretary Beverly Madden recently took a trip to California to visit her mother, Fortune Fuller. Ms. Fuller has been very ill and when Beverly arrived her condition started to improve. With Beverly's beautiful smile, how could it miss. Shirley Chenoweth called the other day and wanted to bring MCC up on Carl's condition. He has contacted the West Nile Virus and been having a tough time of it lately. Lots of rest and nurse Shirley at his side is what the doctor ordered. Get well soon Carl. Please keep all of our members, family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. - V/C Dottie Murray 2004 Officer Slate As prescribed in the Maryland Cruising Club’s Constitution and By Laws, Article XII, Committees, Section 6, the Nominating Committee has set forth the following slate of officers for the year 2003-2004. DELEGATE REPORT Commodore Ken Bean reported that he had attended the DRYL (Delaware River Yachtsman’s League Queen’s Pageant in Philadelphia. The winner was Ms. Julie McKee who represented Happy Hour Yacht Club. Julie was also voted miss congeniality by her peers. On September 13, 2003 Betty and I attended the 100Th anniversary celebration of Corinthian Yacht Club. Corinthian Yacht Club is located on the Potomac River just across the river from Point Look Out. I’ve never seen so much food in one place at one time. Coles Marsh, Maryland Legislative Director reported that the governor’s task force to study the feasibility of licensing all boaters has been selected. One of CBYCA’s standing positions is against licensing of all boaters. Maryland
Cruising Club’s Past Commodore in 1996, Betty Stahler was nominated for
Commodore of CBYCA. Her ball will be on December 13, 2003 at Best Western
Hotel/Conference Center, located at 5625 O’Donnell Street in Baltimore (just
off RT# 95). Time
is from 1830 Hrs. Please contact P/C Darlene Sauer: 410-591-8831 - B/M Al Freedman The Choking Gourmet Last Wednesday, just before the storm, eight of us from MYC again went to Anchor Inn for their steak special. Any one who has not tried it is missing the best deal in town; A 16 oz. New York Strip steak, with two sides for $9.95. (This is the second time I have reported on this special because it’s so good). * * * * * * * * * * A guy goes into a store and tells the clerk “I’d like some Ukrainian sausage”. The clerk looks at him and says, “Are you Ukrainian?” The guy, clearly offended, say, “Well yes I am, but let me ask you Something---If I had asked you for Italian sausage would you ask me if I were Italian? Or if I had asked for German Sausage would you ask me if I were German? Or if I had asked for a Kosher hot dog, would you ask me if I were Jewish? Or if I had asked for a Taco would you ask me if I was I Mexican? Would ya, huh, would ya?” The clerk say’s “Well, no.” With deep self righteous indignation, the guy says, “Well all right then why did you ask me if I was Ukrainian, just because I asked you for Ukrainian sausage?” The clerk replies, “Because this is Home Depot.” * * * * * * * * * * I am hereby officially tendering my resignation as an adult. I would like to accept the responsibility of an 8 year-old again. I want to go McDonald’s and think it’s a four star restaurant. I want to think M&M’s are better then money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer’s day. I want to return to a time when life was simple, when all you knew was colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn’t bother you, because you didn’t know what you didn’t know and you didn’t care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to think the world is fair, that everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again. I want to live simply again. I don’t want my day to consist of computer crashes, mountains of paper work, depressing news, how to survive more days in the month then there is money in the bank, doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, So…here’s my check book and my car keys, my credit card bills and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you’ll have to catch me first, cause….. “Tag! You’re it.” - B/M Al Freedman MCC Has Special Balls for 2004!!!!! The 2004 Cruising Year marks a special celebration for Maryland
Cruising Club - our 50th Anniversary year. To help us start off the
season, we will be honoring all our 2004 Officers and Board Members at our
Commodore's Ball on Saturday, November 1st. Each and every member is invited to
join in the celebration . . . get dressed up in your finest . . . come out ready
to party and enjoy!! Dine on a special selection of culinary delights, and dance
the night away to the tunes of Robin & The Rhythmix!!! Once again, as Chairperson of the Registration Committee, I'm
asking each member to notify me if you plan to attend. We will try to have
special seating available for the home Club of the new Commodore. - P/C Darlene Sauer For the past 2 years, I have assisted the Vice Commodore by typesetting the Scuttlebutt (and many thanks to the printer--you know who you are)! During this time, I have edited out inappropriate language, ethnic and racial slurs, incorrect spellings, and generally attempted to keep the Scuttlebutt clean, error-free, and in good taste. I wasn't always successful, and some things did get through. However, it was my goal to be sure that the Scuttlebutt would include articles that all members could read and enjoy--including impressionable young Princesses. It is my hope that the editors in the future will take as much care to ensure the wholesomeness of this publication--and if the membership does take exception to any unacceptable articles, that they will make their objections known. I'll be watching! - P/C Pamela Hunt This page was last updated on 10/07/03. |
