Commodore James Martin
On the 13th of September, 1954, Mr. James Martin, Commodore of Uncle Tom’s School of Hunting and Fishing, along with friends, Tom Robinson, William Mattheu, Jesse Nolan, and Ruth Beecham founded the Maryland Outboard Cruising Club. Their thoughts were for a boat club that would cruise together in friendship, fun and safety. This is expressed in their motto which is still with the club today: Meeting and Cruising Frequently in an Atmosphere of Sociability and Good Fellowship.” James Martin thus became the first Commodore of the Maryland Outboard Cruising Club (MOCC). Commodore James Martin
In 1955, the Constitution of the MOCC was subject to many changes, resulting in the forerunner of our present constitution. Commodore James Martin continued holding office for a second year. The Scuttlebutt was also introduced in 1955 by Bert Bader. We quote from the 1955 edition in part, “Wasn’t it great to be on our first overnight cruise of the season? In 1957, newly elected Commodore Roy Fowler took command. The first Queen, Mrs. Lillian Mattheu was crowned at Sam Smith Park by his Honor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., Mayor of Baltimore City. In 1958, Commodore Robert Grepps became the club’s leader and a very significant step was taken when an amendment was passed to allow present members who had or would purchase inboard boats to remain in the MOCC. On June 8th of that same year, Mrs. Henry Seim was crowned Queen of the MOCC. The ceremonies were again held at Sam Smith Park with Mayor D’Alesandro again bestowing the honors. 1959 saw Commodore Earl Mauer take the reins of a now thriving MOCC. This was the year that the Maryland Boating Act was drafted and submitted as House Bill No. 256. The Maryland Outboard Cruising Club was well represented at the hearings that were to follow and the members who attended these hearings were to play a major part in the final writing of the Maryland Boat Act. 1969 was perhaps the most significant year thus far in the history of the club. With newly elected Commodore Stewart Shellenberger and his pretty Queen Marge at the helm, there were many changes. The name of the club was changed to the Maryland Cruising Club. A burgee contest was held to select a new burgee to represent the newly named club. In 1976, Commodore Gil Parks manned “The Wheel” as MCC traveled the Bay. Our Princess was Kimberly Williams. Commodore Parks will surely go down as the most moving Commodore in MCC history. MCC lived up to its name and cruised in large numbers throughout the season. We also added a new PA system and an indoor flagpole and yardarm to our inventory. Commodore Jim Calvert ably guided MCC through 1980. He was the first Commodore to have served as Secretary and then the four flag offices for five consecutive years of service. MCC was proud to again have Donna Abel represent us as Princess. Early in the year, gasoline shortages threatened to limit cruising activities. Fortunately, they never did develop, but high fuel prices did ($1.30) per gallon)! Despite the high prices, large cruises and sumptuous pier parties were a major summer activity. Our First Mates surpassed all expectations with their contributions to the pier parties. Cooking for the First Annual Fish Fry was handled by Captain Ed Kunkowski. Under the direction of Commodore Bill Greaver, the officers of MCC designed a new Opening Day protocol which was imitated, but seldom equaled, by many clubs on the Bay during 1982. Lynn Christian enthusiastically served as MCC’s Princess. The season ended with a bang as Commodore Greaver and First Lady Carol hosted a dinner dance on our Frostbite Cruise to BYC. Despite a blown engine, Commodore Greaver was still able to review his fleet from aboard the “All C’s” thanks to a tow from Treasurer Jerry Troy. Our 1983 boating season was very successful as Commodore Jack McComas took command. Almost all of the Opening Days were attended by the Officers, and Princess Becky Knapp, who only missed one because she gave her time to the March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon. MCC had a membership approaching 80 and we managed to bring home three plaques. The members who attended the Frostbite and Fleet Review gave Commodore Jack & Lady Evelyn memories to cherish for a lifetime. The 1984 boating season was an enjoyable and successful one with Commodore Mike Murray in command. The Opening Day Ceremonies were well attended by our MCC Officers and many members. None, however, could outshine our lovely Princess, Terry Gnau who braved both sun and fire to represent MCC around the Bay. Hooray, Terry! Again, we brought home a couple of the coveted plaques for the largest fleet in attendance. Our membership was growing in leaps and bounds, making our cruises spectacular thanks largely to our First Lady’s bountiful and delicious gifts to our pier parties. The old adage, “the more the merrier” sure held true for MCC. Commodore Mike and Lady Dottie will long remember the honor bestowed on them as witnessed by the large turnout for his Frostbite Cruise and Fleet Review. The 1985 boating season was one filled with great fun with Commodore Jerry Troy guiding our way. Our lovely Princess Danielle Abel did an outstanding job attending almost all of the Opening Day ceremonies around the Bay. Membership reached an all time high this year, producing new member, Bill Alcarese, who saved our cruising season by taking over the office of Fleet Captain. The cruising season came to an end with our Frostbite Cruise and a gala evening hosted by Commodore Jerry and First Lady Jean, and fond memories for a long time to come. The 1986 boating season, led by Commodore Howard Gnau, was a fun-filled year with fine memories to cherish with so many MCC officers, board members and volunteers giving generously of their time and talents to make MCC grow. The season ended with the Frostbite Cruise at the Inner Harbor that was hosted by Commodore Howard and First Lady Pat and will always be remembered with a great turnout and the surprise that came along. The Fleet Review will leave Commodore Howard and First Lady Pat with memories to last a lifetime that will always be cherished. 1987 marked MCC’s one-third century anniversary and Commodore Chris Brettschneider and his officers and members had a most enjoyable year. Our First Mates, led by President Dottie Murray, were always ready and able to help with every function from pier parties, meetings, dinners, selling raffle tickets to organizing a “First Mate’s Cruise”. Opening Day with the Patapsco River Power Squadron serving as Honor Guard and the Boumi Temple Drum and Bugle Corps performing was well attended by members and guests. Princess Karen Ciatola did an outstanding job representing MCC at the openings and was one of the first finalists at the Queen’s Pageant. Fleet Captain Tony Floramo organized and led the memorable cruises around the bay and as far away as Cape May, Stone Harbor, and Atlantic City, NJ. The year ended with Commodore Chris receiving his plaque for serving 5 years in office plus one year on the board and the 4 Flag Offices in succession. Commodore Chris is sure to have a great sense of pride and accomplishment as he reflects on the memories of a great year and turns the helm over to his successor. In 1988, Commodore Andy Crusse and his officers lead MCC through their 34th year of fun-filled parties, dinners, and great cruising weather. The Officers, Board Members, and membership generously gave their time and talents to ensure a successful year. The First Mates gave us tremendous support and many delicious dinners and pier party goodies throughout the year. The season ended with the Frostbite Cruise being held at Baltimore Yacht Club and a great turnout for the Fleet Review (held at P/C Sporer’s pier) despite the weather. It was a memorable weekend for Commodore Andy and First Lady Marilyn. P/C Gerry Mannel took us to Kent Narrows, P/C Bill Greaver to Miles River, P/C Jim Calvert to Rock Hall, P/C Jerry Troy to Rose Haven, and P/C Bill Price ended the season with the Frostbite cruise to Baltimore Yacht Club and Fleet Review at P/C Sporer’s pier. Commodore Walter Amass took command of the club in 1990. In November, the social activities our club began with the Commodore’s Ball on November 4th at Northpoint Gardens. The Queen of the Chesapeake, Miss Shelly Fillar, our Princess Sharon Gnau, along with a large group of MCC members and guests, with 48 visiting Officers and friends from our sister yacht clubs, made the night a memorable one for the Commodore. The annual Christmas Party, Officers Cocktail Party in January, and the Bull Roast in February kept the social calendar hopping along at a merry pace towards Opening Day of May 12. This Opening Day was the largest ever with 26 visiting clubs, 14 Princesses and the lovely Queen Shelly bringing greetings for a successful boating season. This year was brought to a close with a challenging cruise to the Kent Island Yacht Club for the Frostbite and Fleet Review. The weather made sailors out of us! Our host at KIYC wined and dined us like Kings and Queens. Those in attendance shall always remember this cruise as a wonderful end to a great year. Bob Bittner became Commodore in 1991. His Princess was Tammy Anderson. The Commodore’s Ball at the top of the World Trade Center included a wonderful day/night view of the Harbor. On Sunday, 75 people were treated to breakfast at the Rusty Scupper. At Christmas, 180 people attended the party where Tom Chalk and First Mate Judy presided as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus. The Shake Down Cruise to the Inner Harbor was cold, wet, and windy for the five hearty boaters and those who drove to the pier party. Later, Opening Day was sunny weather with a large turnout of 26 visiting clubs. MCC attended lots of club openings and garnered a couple of plaques. In August, 12 boats cruised to Mears Point and enjoyed a sumptuous crab feast. The highlight of the season was the Frostbite Cruise to the Annapolis Harbor. There was a 16 boat fleet, plus other drove. That night, 85 people attended the dinner/dance at the Fleet Reserve Club. On Sunday, Commodore Bob and Lady Dottie were treated to a very spirited Fleet Review. August of 1991 saw the passing of P/C Bill Price, a charter member and Past Commodore who served many years as Treasurer of MCC. For 1992, the helm of MCC was turned over to the skillful leadership of Commodore Gus Kaminaris, along with a full slate of Flag and Staff Officers. Gus and his Officers represented MCC for the year of 1992. The Commodore’s Ball was held in the Ballroom at Scarlet Place in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. The Ball was attended by over 130 guests who began what would be a banner year for MCC. Commodore Gus and First Lady Fannie hosted a very successful Bull and Oyster Roast held at the Bowley’s Quarters Fire Hall. Shortly thereafter followed the 1992 MCC Opening Day. While the weather was threatening, Commodore Kaminaris welcomed a large number of visiting clubs, their officers, and their Princesses. MCC’s Princess for 1992 was Miss Tammy Anderson who attended all the major events of MCC as well as a vast majority of other club opening day ceremonies. MCC had a wonderful slate of weekend cruises and a one-week cruise to the southern bay. The fall of 1992 brought the Fleet Review Dinner Dance held at Maryland Yacht Club in honor of our Commodore. The morning of the fleet review, 61 members of MCC were treated to breakfast provided by Commodore Kaminaris and his First Lady Fannie. A large number of MCC vessels attended the Fleet Review to say thanks to Commodore Kaminaris for a truly outstanding year. In 1993, the helm was turned over to our youngest Commodore, Joe Block. This was the beginning of a very exciting year for MCC. In October, Betty Stahler was voted in as the first woman member and was quickly voted into office as Fleet Captain. F/C Betty Stahler went right to work planning a land cruise to Atlantic City and many boat cruises. The most memorable cruise was to MYC in June. MCC’s Princess, Tammy Anderson was the first MCC Princess to be crowned Queen of the Chesapeake. What an honor for Tammy and for MCC. Commodore Block will always remember his swim that day. September brought the Frostbite/Fleet Review Cruise to MYC. Saturday evening, many members enjoyed a delicious dinner and dance. Rain and wind didn’t interfere with the hearty breakfast prepared by Commodore Block and V/C Don Antos. The Fleet Review went off as planned—the rain had stopped but the winds continued to blow. Commodore Donald Antos
In 1994, Donald Antos was installed as the 40th Commodore of MCC at a gala ball held at Martin’s Eastwind. Commodore Don and First Lady Rosalie had a memorable night and took home a video tape they will enjoy in the years to come. The presence of the Queen of the Chesapeake, Tammy Anderson was noteworthy since she was the first MCC Princess to win this coveted office. During the following winter season, MCC was represented by the Commodore and his Lady who attended the many balls around the Chesapeake Bay. The 1993 Christmas Party, the 1994 Officers Cocktail Party in January, and the Annual Bull Roast in March kept the social life of MCC active and the financial health of the club in good order. Rear Commodore Betty Stahler organized the MCC Opening Day—unfortunately, the weatherman did not cooperate. By 11:30 AM, all outdoor setups were moved inside Commodore Hall because of threatening weather. By 1:30 PM, the rainfall was heavy and stayed that way all afternoon. The weather did not hurt the attendance as there was an excellent turnout for the indoor ceremonies. During the cruising season, the club enjoyed a Shake Down Cruise to the Inner Harbor, a mid-season cruise to Georgetown, and an enjoyable Crab Feast Cruise to Haven Harbor Marina. The cruising season ended with a Frostbite Cruise to Crescent Yacht Club. Commodore Don and Lady Rosalie hosted a cocktail party and a dinner/dance on Saturday and a Sunday morning breakfast. The spirited Fleet Review was a great wrap up for another successful boating season for MCC. In the Fall of 1994, the MCC First Mates dissolved their auxiliary organization. At his final meeting, Commodore Antos presided over the vote that conveyed full MCC membership to the former Mates and converted the club into a family based organization. Commodore Mark Belcher and Lady Jackie were saluted at the ball for the 1995 season held at the Annapolis Marriott Hotel. This affair was made more memorable due to the fact that the beautiful weather enabled many members to arrive by boat. Princess Susan Kopacz made all of our members proud by her fine showing at the Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant by being called back as one of the six finalists. Even without the support of a Rear Commodore or Fleet Captain, MCC managed to have a successful year. 1996 was an exciting year. Commodore Betty Stahler was our first woman Commodore to take command. With a full slate of officers and a positive outlook, the year was filled with exciting cruises and affairs. The year was opened with a beautiful ball at the Embassy Suites Hunt Valley where many of the visitors stayed overnight after the ball and enjoyed breakfast. For the first time, we saw a repeat performance of a flag officer when 1987 P/C Chris Brettschneider was sworn in as Vice Commodore. Opening Day was a day to remember. The sun shone brightly as we were honored with twenty-eight yacht clubs of which twenty-one were represented by their Commodores, the largest turnout of Commodores in recent history. We were honored once again when our Princess Rhonda Renee Knight was crowned Queen of the Chesapeake in June. The Frostbite Cruise and Fleet Review in October was held at Maryland Yacht Club where 11 boats bid a fond farewell to their Commodore after a delicious breakfast hosted by Commodore Betty and V/C P/C Chris. Commodore Betty and Al “Lady Alice” Freedman will always have fond memories of their year. 1997 became a whirlwind year with many firsts and many changes that propelled MCC to the forefront of the yachting community. Commodore Chris Brettschneider, taking his second turn as Commodore, came into office with the 1996 Princess/Queen Rhonda Renee Knight still reigning. 1997’s 16-year old Princess Katie Murray also went on to win the Queen’s Crown giving MCC two Queens in a row which only happened once before in the 50-year history of the Queen’s Pageant. MCC had two queens in a row and three of the last five. If that wasn’t enough excitement for a club, we moved from our 25-year home at the Commodore Hall to our plush facilities at Sparrows Point Country Club. F/C Pam Hunt and I/P/C Betty Stahler organized the First Annual Walk-A-Thon for Parkinson’s Disease in honor of our 1985-1986 Commodore Howard Gnau who suffered with the disease and passed away later in the year. Over $7,000 was raised by members of the many clubs who walked from Eastern Yacht Club to Sue Haven Yacht Club to Crescent Yacht Club on a beautiful Saturday morning with camaraderie, fellowship, and fun never experienced before among the clubs that participated. With the fun momentum in full swing, we started the Opening Day Season often with 12 or more officers and Past Commodores in line showing our support for Queen Katie and our dedication to fun. Our move to SPC, notoriety of a second Queen and having hosted the Walk-A-Thon, brought us 23 new members and we ended the year with a greatly improved treasury. With a full slate of officers, all working together to promote the Club and have a good time, each function, dinner, cruise, and money maker was a success that our long-time members agree made 1996-1997 a banner year that will be remembered for years to come. 1998 saw the fledging relationship between MCC and Sparrows Point Yacht Club (SPYC) solidify into a harmonious partnership under the leadership of Commodore Brian Hunt. Many members gained "dual citizenship" as we helped fill SPYC slips and SPYC joined us for our cruises and the social side of the Yacht Club experience. Meetings frequently ended with IPC Chris Brettschneider at the piano and R/C "Patsy Cline" Pam Hunt singing lead with boaters and non-boaters alike joining in. Many of these impromptu parties carried way into the late night! Our lovely Princess Karen Breach gave all of us a lesson in courage this year and had us brimming with pride when she participated in the 1999 queen's pageant. It was just two days after getting out of the hospital with a broken back! Queen Katie Murray's outstanding reign came to an end leaving a legacy that will set the standard for future queens that will be hard to meet. B/M Dottie Murray and P/C Mike Murray deserve a lot of credit for their wonderful support of daughter Katie. We had a great cruising season thanks to F/C Buzz Wilson who created a varied land/sea program filled with innovative new ideas. Treasurer Shirley and V/C Jim Poling teamed with B/M Lou Sauer and Secretary Darlene to create some of the best publications on the bay featuring colored pictures of club merriment and outstanding graphics. R/C F/L Pam Hunt chaired one of our most profitable Bull Roasts ever and championed our Annual Howard Gnau Walk for Parkinson's Disease Research and raised over $7000 for this worthy cause. Financially we finished the year with a large contribution to our reserves. Our membership continued its aggressive growth and we worked hard to keep our meetings light-hearted and enjoyable and filled with laughs. We were successful and harmony reigned! 1999 brought a continuation of Maryland Cruising Club’s recognition as a strong, aggressive Yacht Club on the Bay lead by Commodore Jim Poling. The club entered its third year in its relationship with Sparrows Point Country Club utilizing the club’s gorgeous facilities for many of its affairs. During the course of the year, SPCC experienced Management changes, as both the General Manager and Clubhouse Manager resigned. There was genuine concern within MCC as to our future with Sparrows Point County Club. Following the appointment of SPCC’s new General Manager, Nadine Auville and her staff, the relationship between SPCC’s Management and their Board of Directors continued to flourish with MCC being known for its great parties and fun-loving crowds. MCC’s growing respect within the yachting community is largely due to a group of devoted, hard working Officers and a great General Membership! Our lovely Princess Karen Breach, honoring the club with her second reign as MCC Princess also served as Opening Day cheerleader. As a result of Karen’s constant encouragement, MCC was represented at 25 Opening Day Ceremonies winning 7+ awards for “Most Officers/Boats in Attendance”. At our Opening Day festivities, MCC was honored with representatives from 28 visiting Sister Clubs, 14 Princesses, The Queen of the Chesapeake, Katie Watson and MCC’s own past Queen from 1997, Katie Murray. Unfortunately, prior to MCC’s Opening Day Celebration, R/C Dion Guthrie announced he would be unable to complete his term as R/C due to personal obligations. Following his resignation, Secretary Darlene Sauer was elected Rear Commodore for the remainder the 1999 term. April Geisler was elected MCC Secretary to fill the vacancy created by Darlene as she moved up to R/C. Again, Maryland Cruising Club had a full slate of Officers. 1999 may go down in MCC’s history as the year of cruises. F/C Angela Krzystan did a fantastic job in organizing both land and boat cruises occurring on an almost bi-weekly basis during the summer! She also successfully completed a weeklong cruise to Cape May, N.J. during not the most favorable weather conditions. (Five brave crews braved the wrath of Mother Nature that week). All who participated had a great time!!! R/C Darlene & B/M Louie Sauer arranged the grand finale of the cruise season. A 7-day cruise to the Western Caribbean. What started out as a venture to try to get a few couples committed to a BIG cruise ended with 35 cabins filled with fun-loving MCC members, friends and relatives aboard the Norwegian Wind. Chairperson V/C Pamela Hunt and her committees for the 3rd Annual P/C Howard Gnau Parkinson’s Disease Walk-A-Thon raised well over $6400, which was donated to The Johns Hopkins Parkinson’s Disease Center. V/C Pam, along with R/C Darlene & B/M Louie Sauer can also be congratulated for their continued efforts in publishing our extremely popular monthly newsletter...The Scuttlebutt. Thanks to all of our members, MCC remains healthy in terms of membership and is financially sound as we evolve into the new millennium. Commodore Pamela Hunt announced right from the beginning that MCC’s Year 2000 would be dominated as best described by two themes, “FUN—FUN—FUN” and “Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff”, and she gave no quarter to those who differed! The enthusiasm and excitement started right away with a gala Commodore’s Ball at SPCC featuring the most unique and beautiful centerpieces created and designed by B/M Dottie Murray. The centerpieces consisted of clear glass goblets, gold marbles, candles, and real, live GOLDFISH. Party hats and tiaras adorned the tables which, by the end of the evening, found their way cocked on the heads of our guests. The Ball was a spectacular celebration for the 23 visiting clubs as well as the host of MCC members who attended, many of whom went home with their goldfish neatly tucked in a zip lock bag, compliments of B/M Dottie. Goldfish weren’t the only surprise for our guests that evening. For the first time in the Club’s 45 year history, taking the helm was an all female bridge. Don’t let anyone tell you that MCC doesn’t keep up with the times. V/C Darlene & B/M Louie Sauer’s plans during the previous year for arranging the 7-day cruise to the Western Caribbean were finally realized. During the first week in December, over 70 MCC members, their family and friends left Baltimore for the islands with many of our officers and members rushing back in time to attend the CBYCA Ball where our 1994 Commodore Don Antos took the helm as Commodore of CBYCA. Fleet Captain Pat Soltesz coordinated a cruise to the Inner Harbor for The New Year and Millenium Celebration with 15 boats in attendance. Within minutes after the new year, Como Pam slipped off the pier and into the icy waters of the Inner Harbor. Unhurt, Como Pam went on to change clothes and continue to enjoy the fireworks—more than a few clubs heard about the incident, however, when it appeared in the morning edition of the Baltimore Sun. All around the Bay the word spread! MCC’s Commodore has been re-christened! Commodore Pam is now known as “Commodore Splash”, the very first person to enter the Inner Harbor waters in the new millennium! Shivers aside, Pam guided MCC through the rigors of maintaining our place as a respected club on the Bay. We averaged seven (7) officers at each of the 26 club openings we attended, garnered 9 plaques and had Commodore Pam or her representative officer at 24 Balls (fun, but exhausting). Princess Amanda Bishop attended almost all of the openings that the officers did and managed to represent the club very well in the Queen Pageant. V/C Darlene very ably managed the 4th annual Howard Gnau Walk for Parkinson’s Disease raising over $8000. V/C Darlene also took over the Scuttlebutt publication and continued, with “Printer Pal”, to publish a very professional looking document that is the envy of many clubs. V/C Dar also successfully coordinated a membership drive that brought in 9 new members and introduced MCC to “MCC Bucks”! Thanks to R/C Angela Krzystan and her able assistant, the Bull Roast managed to turn a profit and we had a very successful Opening Day book that kept the club solvent for the next year. Fleet Captain Pat (who married our B/M P/C Chris for the second time) coordinated many wonderful cruises including the introduction of the Maryland Cruise-Olympic Games and Turkey Fry and the first ever Riddle Cruise. Everyone was a winner as members, friends and family joined in the fun on the water this year with MCC. The season ended with a spectacular Fleet Review Dinner & Dance. F/C Pat created a very humorous and in-depth look at the year in review and rounded out the evening with awarding the “Busted Prop Award” to Captain Warren Eastburn for trying to use his wife, Libbie, as a spring line cleat. The review fleet was made up of 14 boats who gave Como Pam a generous send off. Even 1984 P/C Mike Murray donned his uniform again for a touching salute. MCC began a new tradition during 2000 by selecting a “Member Of The Year”. This honor was bestowed on Libbie Eastburn who worked diligently all year to assist in any job that was available. On the lighter side of things, be it known that at many of our social events with B/M P/C Chris Brettscheider at the piano and Commodore Pam at the microphone, MCC sported the distinction of having the one, the only “Commodore Splash—the Singing Commodore”! And so we leave the legacy of MCC in 2000. We had heaps of fun this year and hope all who follow have the same! Maryland Cruising Club’s 2001 social calendar boasted a “glowing” start with our Commodore’s Ball, complete with luminescent stars and night-glow jewelry. (And we were afraid the guests would need instructions)!!! First Captain “Screwie Louie” made a surprise entrance decked out in his white Tuxedo (complete with tails) to assist Commodore Darlene Sauer in greeting Guests and dancing the night away. 2001 Princess, Amanda Bishop, and a full Slate of officers joined in the evening’s fun making it another successful event. 2001 was the initial year of the calendar change for our Princess installation, allowing her to serve her entire reign with the same bridge. Since Princess Amanda was officially installed at the October Change-of-Watch ceremony, A Reception was held in her honor at our November meeting. December brought our traditional Holiday Party, hosted by Sec.April Geisler, with a big assist from Hether Shulman. Not only were there presents and food, but there were hand-crafted Christmas trees presented to the officers, a holiday bingo game with edible game pieces, and “live” entertainment courtesy of Scott & Hether Shulman and the MCC “Cruisettes.” Creativity, talent and fun were the hallmark of this event. Thankfully, late December brought enough freezing weather that most of the smaller tributaries were frozen over, saving Commodore Dar from having to carry on the tradition of P/C Pamela Hunt . . .the infamous New Year’s Eve dip in the harbor. January had us line dancing at the Member Appreciation Party, courtesy of R/C Pat Brettschneider, and attending a pool party, courtesy of F/C Melodie Janes. February saw us trying to match beautiful babies to officer photos, while March celebrated Capt. Ed Bruette’s 80th birthday (Commodore Dar’s Dad) with a fire prevention seminar. (those candles put up a heck of a fight!) Serious business started in April, with MCC’s Bull Roast – hosted by R/C Pat Brettschneider and cast of thousands – adding a highly successful silent auction feature. MCC followed up with the 5th Annual Parkinson’s Walk – hosted by V/C Angela Krystan – continuing our service to the community. Opening Day 2001 was a truly memorable site!!! Boats were greeted by a “pile driver” salute as crews rushed to finish the new docks at SPCC. Another first this year – serving complimentary breakfast prior to the 11 am ceremony, and moving the site near the gazebo and tennis courts. Hats off to R/C Pat Brettschneider and her teams of talent! (And one more first .. . kazoos!!!) Fleet Captain Melodie Janes took over for the summer, with several record breaking cruises (in excess of 20 boats) with the most notable being the Labor Day Weekend joint cruise with Ventnor Yacht Club. MCC hosted the Super Boat Games and Turkey Fry Dinner bringing 40+ boats and just over 100 people together at Georgetown Yacht Basin. F/C Melodie and R/C Pat worked together (with many, many MCC folks) to make this unique and fantastic weekend fun for all. Sadly, our country experienced a deep loss on September 11th. As we all struggled to understand exactly what was happening and why, MCC came together in fellowship at our annual Past Commodore’s Crab Feast with over 70 people in attendance. We shared not only food and funds (we raised several hundred dollars for the 911 Relief Fund), but also some smiles started to return as we looked to our friends for comfort and normalcy. Our highly successful 2001 year drew to a close with our Fleet Review weekend at the end of September. F/C Melodie Janes and most of MCC rallied together for one of the funniest and most enjoyable reviews ever. Como. Dar and V/C Angela managed to deliver c-rations (it really could not be classified as a real breakfast) to everyone on Sunday morning, decked out in jammies, floppy slippers and hair rollers. As 21 MCC vessels passed by in review, Como. Dar, Princess Amanda and Capt. Screwie Louie all stood proudly on the bow of “Screwie Louie Too.” It was time for a new year to begin. The year 2002 saw Commodore Angela Krystan take the reigns of MCC. We continued on our outreach to other clubs attending many openings and Commodores’ Balls. Princess Laura Kaelber did an outstanding job representing the club at many of these affairs. We had our annual Crab Feast at Key YC, our Fleet Review at Red Eye YC and two of our nine scheduled Cruises were to sister clubs (Baltimore and Maryland YC’s). We also traveled on a land cruise to Atlantic City. We had no official Fleet Captain or R/C this year but IPC Darlene Sauer worked hard and coordinated a number of volunteer members who stepped forward to chair various events throughout the year. Successes included our coordination of the All-Club Walk for Parkinson’s Disease Research which raised over five thousand dollars for this worthy cause. The Scuttlebutt with P/C Pam Hunt as Publisher and V/C P/C Donald Antos as editor, continued to be one of the most admired club newsletters around. In the recognition department, MCC’s image was forever changed by the performance of Captain Louie Sauer as he competed for the title of King of the Chesapeake. Louie was a close runner-up but he certainly will not be forgotten.
