Heroes
I realized I respected
her, loved her, because as my lips spoke her name and my mind wrapped
around the words, my voice came softer, cupping the syllables that held
volumes of images and words. "Annie Dillard," "Alice Walker,"
"Jeanette Winterson," "Ayn Rand"-- the list goes on.
I read them like
the bible, ate them like fire, pressed them under my fingernails hoping
that I could be half the woman, half the writer.
