I began training in September of 1990 with Sa Bom Nim Paulo Amaral at Amaral Karate in Ellenville, NY. While growing up I was fascinated with all aspects of the martial arts. As an adult, I took advantage of the opportunities to become more knowledgeable of the art. Once I began training Soo Bahk Do, I found that there was more to training than I had originally anticipated. Besides physical and mental conditioning, strong friendships were being formed within the do jang and at both local and national events, as well.
Training became such an important part of my life that I trained everyday. I was disappointed when my work schedule began to conflict with my do jang’s schedule so I began training with Sa Bom Nim Poppo at the Liberty MDKA two days a week while still training in Ellenville four days. As a red belt, I attended the senior classes at the Warwick do jang with Sa Bom Nim Klein. During these training sessions, I began to build strong ties with many members of the Liberty and Warwick do jangs.
As a Cho Dan, I had an opportunity to purchase Amaral Karate when Master Amaral returned to Brazil. Fortunately for me, I had always felt that Sa Bom Nims Klein and Poppo, along with Sa Bom Nim Amaral, were my instructors. So I had never felt I was without an instructor during that transition time. As we reinforced our relationship and the connection between the studios, I felt it was time to show that commitment by asking Sa Bom Nim Poppo if we could rename the studio to the Ellenville MDKA. Today I am thankful for the dedication of our relationships because now my commitment to the art is as strong as ever.
