1.2 Specific reference
Specific reference can be definite or indefinite. Specific definite reference requires the use of a definite determiner such as the; specific indefinite reference requires either an indefinite determiner such as a or some, or nothing at all. Definite determiners other than the include the demonstratives this/that, these/those, the possessives my, your, its, our, their, as well as (n)either, each, which, and whose. Indefinite determiners other than -a(n) and some include another, any, every, no, and what; the absence of a determiner is referred to as the zero article.
