1.8.2 All with temporal nouns
Rule: Before temporal nouns in negative contexts, all is usually followed by the zero article.
Examples of errors:
(1) I don't go around analyzing myself all the day.
(2) He didn't come home all the night.
Although many (particularly British) speakers may use the definite article in temporal expressions like all the day, all the week, etc., in negative contexts the article is not usual (cf. (1)). Americans tend to omit the article in both positive and negative sentences, e.g.:
He sings all day.
He didn't sing all day.
This rule doesn't apply to the adverbial all the time, which requires the article in both negative and positive contexts. The adjective all-time has no article.
